To spend £1,000 on a 4 night Butlins Bognor break?

That's the quote for 4 nights in a 3 bed gold apartment in the Easter hols, with the cheaper breakfast/dinner option. Sounds a lot of money, would it be worth it? Just want a post winter break with stuff to keep the boys amused (9, 6 & 3) while I sit and feel knackered

We had a week in venice in the summer holidays for that money!!! Sure you can find a better deal or destination with a bit of research!

mrsjay · 22/12/2013 16:38

we went to majorca for a week last easter for that with 4 people the dds are classed as adults dont pay it look around

mrsjay · 22/12/2013 16:38

Majorca*

mrsjay · 22/12/2013 16:39
  • I meant breaks IN the sun,as in laying by the pool slapping on the factor 30,not the £9.50 pp in a caravan breaks.

oh god sorry Blush we used Jet 2 holidays

floppyfanjo · 22/12/2013 16:39

sapphirestar did that include 2 meals a day and entertainment for 5 people ?

sapphirestar · 22/12/2013 17:02

floppyfanjo technically yes as 1000 included spending money

Artandco · 22/12/2013 17:07

Holiday lettings has hundreds of villas available during Easter holidays. A quick look gives you a villa on Romania coast for 8 people for £520 a week. Or a villa for 10 near lake balaton Hungary for £600. Both with pools, both drivable if you wanted or can fly.

floppyfanjo · 22/12/2013 17:40

artdeco flights to hungary are in the region of £200 pp and romania at least £150 pp - all before luggage, transfers and airport parking times it by 5 and add 2x meals out per day pp you still couldn't do it for £1000.

If you drive you've still got ferry crossings and petrol, add on food etc .Agreed its good value, but still not doable for £1000 for 5 people -oh and dont forget the cost of entertaining eveyone - all of which is mostly included in the butlins break

Creamycoolerwithcream · 22/12/2013 17:52

There is actually 6 people in the OP's family that she was costing in for Butlins.

grobagsforever · 22/12/2013 17:56

I'd pay 1000 pounds NOT to go there. And I've been twice. Recently. Go to centre parks, please.

floppyfanjo · 22/12/2013 18:08

A 3 bed four night break at centre parks starts at £829 going up to well over 2k at easter - remember the OP butlins break included half board and all entertainment - can't say the same for CP - I've been to both and to be honest Butlins is by far better value for money than CP.

superram · 22/12/2013 18:10

We didn't even go to butlins but a lovely house in Bognor. Never again it was hell on earth. Awful place. Save your cash.

I had a really lovely 5 day/ 4 night holiday at Butlins which was a perfect choice for us at the time - kids entertainment sorted, low stress levels deciding what to do each day, lots of fun.

BUT no way was it worth £1,000 - I paid about £300 and that was in Tesco Clubcard vouchers - that was fully self catering and silver apartment so I guess with a meal plan and gold accommodation I could say that what you are considering would be worth perhaps £600.

So the question becomes, if the holiday you are considering is priced at £400 higher than what I (obviously a random stranger as far as you are concerned) consider "reasonable" - can you afford to throw away that £400 and go for it, or perhaps is it worth £400 to you to not have the stress of identifying, researching and booking an alternative?

Lighthousekeeping · 22/12/2013 18:43

A lot of you are quoting holidays abroad where driving is necessary. We could all get good deals if we are willing to drive abroad. Some of us don't fancy it or are too nervous to.

rookietherednosedreindeer · 22/12/2013 18:46

Or some of us live in Scotland where it would 4 days to drive there and back with no holiday in the middle !

Doshusallie · 22/12/2013 19:00

We go every year for 4 nights and 5 days in October half term and it costs about £800 for three of us ( me and 2 dses, 9 and 7). We stay in one of the new hotels, and have a premium dining package. They do Halloween very very well. My kids absolutely love it.

BackforGood · 22/12/2013 19:08

I can't see you getting 6 people abroad to anywhere you'd want to stay in the school holidays for £1000, but you'd certainly be able to get a nice cottage with an on-site swimming pool for a lot less than that, which would give you spending money besides. I wouldn't spend that going to Butlins.

nannyafrica · 22/12/2013 19:53

Just looked at www.teletextedholidays.co.uk and a week self catering 4* with flights is £147 each!!!!
We are going to Lanzarote for a cheap week in Feb £210 each and that with car hire.

Worriedkat · 22/12/2013 19:55

Decision made to look again to see if they have a jan sale . I priced up Euro Disney on their website earlier, a 4 bed room in hotel Cheyenne for 4 nights including Eurostar and park entry was £1,650, and we'd need to have 2 rooms for our 6 people. I am Xmas Shock. £3k for 6 people before spending and the website said 2 days 2 nights kids free?

Maybe I am old and out of the loop re holiday pricing!

Superram that's exactly it - Bognor itself is yeuch.

Try Park Resorts, OP.

rookietherednosedreindeer · 22/12/2013 20:06

I googled and found this site saleland.co.uk/butlins-sales and it suggests there will be sale on the prices from start of Jan, based on what happened last year.

Holiday prices have certainly gone up dramatically over the last few years - I think we are feeling it more because wages haven't gone up in line with them. We go to a place where we fortunately did a kind of holiday points thing for weekends so it costs us around £300 for a long weekend in a 2 bed lodge with hot tub, but the public prices are ludicrous now - £900 for 3 nights over the bank holiday break. I'm amazed people have that money for a long weekend.

If you are concerned about spending it makes sense to go somewhere with catering and entertainment included.

Norudeshitrequired · 22/12/2013 22:14

- I paid about £300 and that was in Tesco Clubcard vouchers - that was fully self catering and silver apartment so I guess with a meal plan and gold accommodation I could say that what you are considering would be worth perhaps £600.

You can't get breakfast and evening meals for 6 people for four nights for only £300 in most places(not taking into account the upgrade to gold accommodation). £300 works out at £12.50 each day per person for breakfast and dinner; I can't eat out for that price anywhere.

Bonkerz · 22/12/2013 22:19

We love butlins but it has certainly got more expensive over the years. My 13 yea told ds loves the place though (he has autism and it's perfect to keep him busy) we have booked feb half term for 2 adults and 4 children in silver accommodation and top food for £590 mon-fri. We can't afford this alone but have been lucky enough to get a grant to pay for it (for ds). In comparison we normally rent a caravan for 7 nights which costs about £200!

KenAdams · 22/12/2013 22:46

OP Eurodisney was never going to be cheap. I think you need to look into what you can realistically afford in the school holidays and £250pp won't get you Eurodisney. I was Hmm at the person who suggested Florida too. I've found that non resort hotels don't charge too much more during the school holidays so look at that too.
