To spend £1,000 on a 4 night Butlins Bognor break?

That's the quote for 4 nights in a 3 bed gold apartment in the Easter hols, with the cheaper breakfast/dinner option. Sounds a lot of money, would it be worth it? Just want a post winter break with stuff to keep the boys amused (9, 6 & 3) while I sit and feel knackered

I don't understand why people have such a snobbish attitude towards butlins. I haven't stayed in the basic accommodation, but I can imagine that it is very basic, but the gold accommodation or hotels are not too bad. I've been to centerparcs many times and the only major differences are the price of activities, the range of activities, and the type of some of the clientele. Butlins is much busier than centerparcs due to the accommodation being close together but there is also much more for children to do. We never have a bored moment when we go to butlins. If you want to just chill out and have lazy bbq's and sit in the hot tub for a few days (which is very nice and relaxing) then centerparcs is the right option. If you want to keep the kids entertained and busy for a few days and go home with children who have lots of fun memories then butlins is the right option. The butlins shows do get very busy, but at centerparcs we couldn't even get into the kids disco on any of the night whilst we were there as it was too busy.
I have been to Eurodisney too and it is very overpriced, too much traveling time involved and the food was dire.
I prefer centerparcs, but my kids prefer butlins by a long way, neither of us are overly keen on Eurodisney.

Butlins is OK if you can get on the E-committee.

Littlemisstax · 21/12/2013 21:35

err, it will be perfect for the kids, but a grand!

We went for the day yesterday - me, DH, DFIL, DD(3), DN(2) and DS(16w). Cost us £10 in total as DDs nursery is in the nursery club and we're only half an hour away. Would I have paid the normal day visit price of £50+. No.

and if you do go, the ice rink isn't made of ice and you'll spend hours counting /adding up points tickets for them to get their plastic tat.

navada · 21/12/2013 21:41

I'd pay £1000 to not go.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 21/12/2013 21:45

No never ever ever ever I cant believe you are considering it Xmas Confused so many amazing amazing things you could do with a grand!

For a start you could get yourself to Marrackech for a truly amazing experience, in amazing Riad accommodation, for a trip they will never forget in real luxury and beauty.

Amazing B and B's anywhere in the uk, god, London in a fab hotel at those prices...Paris, what i could do with your budget there!

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 21/12/2013 21:49

Can I ask why you have to book some sort of package?

Why cant you look up your own flights, trains etc and B and B's if in this country?

Check out where you look on trip advisor and away you go.

I would be living like a Queen on a four day break anywhere with a grand.

Upcycled · 21/12/2013 22:05

Can anyone explain how the The Sun cheap butlins works please?

Worriedkat · 21/12/2013 22:26

Could I really get 3 adults plus 3 children on a 4 day break to Marrakech or Paris on £1,000 in the school holidays?

We are not seasoned travellers (not taken DC abroad yet) and am nervous, hence thought a package would be more straightforward.

Really not sure about luxury / 5*, how does that work with a 3 yo who still has the odd regular screaming tantrum and a 5yo who drops peas everywhere when eating Xmas Hmm

Luxury does not have to be 5* hotel!

Luxury can just be beautiful place with amazing service, yes you can, I have never ever spent anywhere close to a grand on holidays!

I work really hard at finding suitable travel and accmd and I aim for the highest standards for the cheapest money, but that usually means b and bs and the like or holiday lets but not hotels.

In Marrakech for example they are I have found super family orientated, no one would bat an eye lid over a tantrum, in fact they would probably shower with so much attention they forgot about it!

Its a different way of living and attitude.

Anyway its worked with my family of geriatric, DF who is quite mad, and toddlers/babies of varying degrees of needs and issues and illnesses.

I would have a look at a few places and weigh up what it would cost you to entertain the kids for a few days. For example it would cost you between £50 and £70 just to visit the dungeons at York. Anywhere with rides, shows etc that you pay for seperate would cost you a fortune. If you are looking at Butlins just to entertain the kids and you will make full use of facilities I would say go for it. We had a great time.

Creamycoolerwithcream · 22/12/2013 11:10

I can't see how a family with 3 adults and 3 children could go abroad with 8 big meals each, activities and entertainment in 3 or 4 room accommodation for a grand during theEaster school holidays. I know you can drive to France and pick up a caravan cheap as it's out of season but surely petrol and tolls would really bump up the costs and us there enough to do if the weather is bad? A grand is a lot but just over £150 per head isn't too bad. I would upgrade the dining though if there is any availability.

Artandco · 22/12/2013 11:58

Creamy- many places offer 3 child places. So if say x2 adults at £500 each, 2 children would go free. That's all inclusive. V popular areas obv more expensive, but places like Tunisia, morrocco, turkey, Poland, Bulgaria etc can have some great deals.

There's only x2 adults and x2 children here, but we have had some great deals on accomadation via holiday lettings and great last min deals. £1000 last year got us 10 days in Oman in a 5 star all inclusive hotel.

Just looking on main websites like Thomson is very expensive. We look for ideas, then call hotels personally and ask for best deals. We get all the main airlines to email us flash sale prices.

Creamycoolerwithcream · 22/12/2013 12:25

Yes I understand that, I'm a complete holidayholic and have booked many amazing trips but was surprised people suggesting a holiday abroad in the school holidays for just over £150 per head. I have a large family and always find quite a big price difference when comparing holidays for 4 and for 6 people. Your trip to Oman sounded fab by the way.

Oblomov · 22/12/2013 12:34

You are mad. Hot sunny pool kids club. Lovely.
Butlins is fine, if you get a really cheap deal.

Norudeshitrequired · 22/12/2013 13:52

You would have to pay me a lot more than £1000 to have a holiday in Oman (even 5 star).
That's the thing, different people like different things and are prepared to spend money on different things.
Some people would rather have their teeth pulled out than spend £1000 on a butlins holiday and some people would rather have their teeth pulled out than spend £1000 on a holiday to Oman.
There are also reasons why some people won't holiday overseas at any cost, including medical needs, dietary needs, a dislike of the heat....
The. Some people love going abroad for the sun, sea, sand and cultural experience of visiting somewhere new and interesting.

cindersinsuburbia · 22/12/2013 15:33

If your thinking about Bognor how about bunn leisure it's like an independent haven or butlins you get much more for your money and its about 30 miles from Bognor

mrsjay · 22/12/2013 15:36

bugger me no way would I pay that for butlins, look at caravan sites

floppyfanjo · 22/12/2013 15:37

Can anyone mentioning these fabulous sounding breaks in the sun please post a link - I've never found anything like this - £50 per person per day including half board and all entertainment in the school holidays......................

mrsjay · 22/12/2013 15:38

there wont be any links going yet I think the sun holidays start in february

floppyfanjo · 22/12/2013 15:48

Mrsjay - I meant breaks IN the sun,as in laying by the pool slapping on the factor 30,not the £9.50 pp in a caravan breaks.

rookietherednosedreindeer · 22/12/2013 15:58

I'd be interested to see the links too ff.

I pride myself on booking our holidays as cheaply as possible by getting flights as early as possible and using accomodation through owners direct, but would struggle to source a holiday for the three of us flight and caravan for less than £1000 never mind food and car hire/transport on top.

Also some people have recommended Euro Disney. On a travel thread people have recommended taking £800 - £1000 spending money for Euro Disney, yes that's money just to spend on food and entertainment when you get there, never mind park tickets, hotels and air fare/Eurorail.

£1000 does seem expensive for Butlins, but I think that's primarily because of the three bedroom aspect. Presumably 2 bedroom would be £650 - £700 which sounds more like the price one "should" pay for a Butlins holiday in the Easter holidays.

I'd love to see someone pricing up a foreign holiday in 3 bedrooms for less than a grand in the easter hols.

HRHwheezing · 22/12/2013 16:07

Just to tell you I paid £222 for an all inclusive weekend in the Whitsun holiday in bluestone. Spa access everything.
It was brill.
Would recommend it.

Miranda79 · 22/12/2013 16:20

Some Eurocamp holidays are about £300 for a 3 bed cabin at that time and a ferry crossing (did a v quick search just now). They will usually run activities for the kids as well - check with a few of them. You can cook your own meals most if the time, so even with petrol should work out to be quite affordable.

Don't think it's very easy!
