to have taught 2yo DD to say vagina?

Because some of the others mums think I am Confused

I don't like all the other names that are bandied around. If there was a 'softer' word, like the equivalent for willy, I would use that but there only seems to be words like daisy or minnie that don't actually indicate what you're talking about.

I know the 'what do you call it' question gets asked a lot, but AIBU to say vagina? Other mums think it is very weird/rude that DD now says "'gina"...

I hate the term 'front bottom', really fucking hate it.

Maebe · 11/12/2013 19:46

Fanny's rude to me - seems I'm not the only one, though we.appear to be in a minority!

'Not a willy' that could work!

Maebe · 11/12/2013 19:52

Not-a-willy is pretty good Grin Factually correct too

Breadkneadslove · 11/12/2013 19:55

But not anatomically correct!

dogindisguise · 11/12/2013 19:57

I'm struggling because DS is fond of saying something along the lines of "that man's got a willy. He does wees standing up. That lady hasn't got a willy." But I don't know whether to teach him vagina because you don't wee out of it. My mum suggests fanny but I'm not keen but maybe it's the most likely option.

Must look up some of the many threads on this subject when I can face it.

So I think YANBU!

middleclassdystopia · 11/12/2013 20:05

It does seem that a little boy saying 'penis' wouldn't raise too many eyebrows.

But a little girl saying 'vulva/vagina' would.

Why is that?

randomAXEofkindness · 11/12/2013 20:13

No, fanny was a swear word where I was brought up as well.

lacucaracha · 11/12/2013 20:13

We say front- and back bottom Xmas Smile

ItsOkayItsJustMyBreath · 11/12/2013 20:14

Weird isn't it middleclass? Time to reclaim our bodies!

lacucaracha · 11/12/2013 20:15

Oh but yanbu. Call it whatever works for you and your family. I must say I don't like twee words to describe the lady bits such as peach, froufrou etc.

elliegoulding · 11/12/2013 20:18

I've heard the 'Minnie' story on CP training many years ago.

Ninasaurus · 11/12/2013 21:25

I would use vagina or 'gina for the external area. Even though it's a vulva.

For clarity I would say 'inside my vagina' if I was specifically referring to the vagina.

I think that's clear.

Could never use fanny.

Maebe · 11/12/2013 21:28

That's a good distinction, inside and outside, until she's old enough to completely get the distinction between vagina, vulva etc

DoYouLikeMyBaubles · 11/12/2013 21:38

As long as you don't say 'tummy'.

BuntyPenfold · 11/12/2013 21:41

Minnie
Noo Noo
Fairy
Are all used frequently in nursery.

I always think fairy is a bit odd, with all the fairy books and costumes around.

dementedma · 11/12/2013 22:12

Fanny is very crude here in scotland. I would be horrified to hear a child using it.

Don't recall there ever being a problem with the dds when they were young....think it was all just vaguely referred to as bottom or bits.

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 11/12/2013 22:35

Dd made up a name noo na for her vulva

PleaseJustLeaveYourBrotherAlon · 11/12/2013 22:50

We use vagina (well, gina). Ill explain vulva-vagina later because she doesn't understand that there is an inside really (dd is nearly 3). I'm not super worried about being anatomicaly correct like the mouth/lips bum/anus points made up thread. and obviously there are various parts to the penis but we mostly all say "penis" to cover everything not including the testicles. I'm more concerned about her not feeling embarrassed using the word vagina as she gets older

I think its sad how many adults feel uncomfortable using the word.

PleaseJustLeaveYourBrotherAlon · 11/12/2013 22:53

Although admittedly I do squirm a bit when she's sees a mom and her newborn and says "that baby came out her ginax!

JockTamsonsBairns · 11/12/2013 22:53

Christ, we must be seriously repressed in our family. I've got 2 Dd's, 16 and 4, and I cannot recall anybody's vulva coming up in conversation.

foreverondiet · 12/12/2013 00:21

We say nooni. As a child I called it front bottom but decided that I didn't want to call it that to dd. She is older now (10) knows the words vagina and vulva but still calls it nooni. Ds1 is 7 calls his penis a willy but knows the term penis and testicles.
