I don't like that they take peoples money when they are in a vulnerable place, lost loved ones etc. It's immoral. Just my opinion.

Thoughts? Opinions?

OP posts:

Dione: I belong to various spiritual meditation and healing groups.

There is a great cross section of people there: teachers, nurses, business people, councillors, writers, carers, artists, social workers.

Most of us avoid discussing our spiritual lives with people outside the group and our immediate friends as bigotry and religious hatred abounds as in evident by this thread.

HettiePetal · 11/12/2013 21:08

Back that up or take it back.

Bigotry & religious hatred - where? C/P the posts please.

DioneTheDiabolist · 11/12/2013 21:11

They are personal beliefs Hettie. There is no proof and no evidence that extends beyond the holder. They are not scientific or mathematical theory. So I cant see how one can have a logical debate about personal beliefs.

You said that you can. Can you explain how it would work?

redrubyindigo · 11/12/2013 21:11

Cor! I could have made £35 out of that on an 0905 number!

valiumredhead · 11/12/2013 21:21

I agree OP, totally fake and prey on the vulnerable.

throwingstones · 11/12/2013 21:21

I'd like to think I could logically explain all my personal beliefs. They may not be the same as somebody else who has different personal beliefs, however I would attribute that to different weightings people put on different arguments, not because it isn't possible for two people to have different personal beliefs that can both be logically explained.

Kendodd · 11/12/2013 21:26

Only skimmed first and last page, but has anyone on this thread said "no they are real" Grin Shockif they have.

TheArticFunky · 11/12/2013 21:27

I think most Psychics/Mediums are probably fake but I think some might be genuine. I went with some work colleagues to see a lovely old lady in Pinner years ago and the information she came out with without asking leading questions was uncanny.

redrubyindigo · 11/12/2013 21:30

I want to start a fake Tarot reading thread now..............

puntasticusername · 11/12/2013 21:31

You can have a logical debate about things that are not, in themselves, 100% logical. "Having a logical debate" means only that the form of the debate shall be in accord with the requirements of logic.

For instance, you can have a logical debate about the existence, or otherwise, of invisible dinosaurs in the cellar, without implying that invisible dinosaurs in the cellar are in themselves logical creatures.

Dammit I knew I'd regret getting sucked into this thread!

curlew · 11/12/2013 21:36

Thebrewstmilksonme- but that's what psychic means. You can't have a non paranormal psychic......

HettiePetal · 11/12/2013 21:47

There is no proof and no evidence that extends beyond the holder

I see what you mean now.

In which case, it's a pretty pointless "debate".

Person A: I believe my dead Aunty Marge rattles my door handle when I'm in bed at night.

Person B: Interesting. What evidence do you have that it's your dead Aunt doing that?

Person A: There's no proof or evidence. I just believe it.

Person B: OK.

That's not a debate. That's a conversation between two people, one of whom is being polite.

If you can't attempt logic and try to provide solid reasoning for your beliefs, you shouldn't be in the debate business at all.

You can sit and tell your therapist all about it though.

HettiePetal · 11/12/2013 21:50

Yes - you can have logical debates about things that don't actually exist.

Who's better? Superman or Batman?

Perfectly possible to have a debate about that.

ItsOkayItsJustMyBreath · 11/12/2013 21:59

I can't believe you know about my nudey pix Hettie Blush

red I do hope you're going to use your new found powers for good.

TheBreastMilk I really don't want to offend you but I am now going to make the phrase 'metaphysical counsellor' part of my vocabulary. Genius!

puntasticusername · 11/12/2013 22:05

Well, Batman, clearly. Because the gadgets.

Next.

ItsOkayItsJustMyBreath · 11/12/2013 22:09

I agree punt, DP refuses to accept that Superman is entitled to be called a superhero as his nemesis is a type of rock which, in the grand scheme of things, isn't that hard to defeat.

HettiePetal · 11/12/2013 22:10

Can Batman spin the Earth so fast time goes backwards?

I think not.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 11/12/2013 22:15

curlew No it doesn't mean supernatural it comes from the Greek meaning 'of the mind'.

puntasticusername · 11/12/2013 22:20

Yeah, but does Batman have to sleep with Teri Hatcher?

No. Therefore, win.

ItsOkayItsJustMyBreath · 11/12/2013 22:21

A psychic (/?sa?k?k/; from the Greek ??????? psychikos—"of the mind, mental") is a person who claims to have an ability to perceive information hidden from the normal senses through extrasensory perception (ESP), or who is said by others to have such abilities. The word "psychic" is also used to describe theatrical performers, such as stage magicians, who use techniques such as prestidigitation, cold reading, and hot reading to produce the appearance of such abilities. It can also denote an ability of the mind to influence the world physically using psychokinetic powers such as those formerly claimed by Uri Geller.

Shamelessly and lazily c&ped from Wiki.

FreudiansSlipper · 11/12/2013 22:21

for those that do not believe that some people are psychic is there anything you do believe in that there is no proof exists (in a scientific way)

Quoteunquote · 11/12/2013 22:22

scientific proof please,

So sad that these people get away with conning.

FreudiansSlipper · 11/12/2013 22:25

do you need that for everything quote?

ItsOkayItsJustMyBreath · 11/12/2013 22:31

Good question Freudian, I am trying to think of something but failing. Maybe it's because it's my bedtime though and I'm still contemplating the Superman v Batman conundrum.

I do believe 2 year olds have an ability to choose the worst possible moment to need a poo, that hasn't been explained... yet.

TheArticFunky · 11/12/2013 22:32

"Scientific proof please".

Well that's not very likely is it? If there was scientific proof of anything remotely supernatural we would be living in a very different world.

Lack of scientific proof doesn't stop people having faith.
