I actually know 2 people called Santa - both women. I can't remember what their heritage is but it's quite a common name where they come from. They get pretty sick of all the jokes about their names, esp at Christmas.

I don't see the problem with a blonde child being called Mario? Lots of names from different cultures are popular in different countries now. I think it's rude of 'Santa'.

smokeandglitter · 07/12/2013 17:07

Ps. I'd never put my names lists up on mumsnet anyway though Grin If me and DP like it then that's good with me.

Floggingmolly · 07/12/2013 17:12

I'd have laughed too...

Idespair · 07/12/2013 17:22

Mario is fine. Maybe Santa plays a lot of computer games.

chateauferret · 07/12/2013 17:28

YANBU. Mario is nothing like as preposterous a name as Santa Claus is.

My DD has a very unusual name and no one has ever laughed... they may go "what" or "how do you spell that" but fair enough. So Santa was rude.

OTOH poor Santa, it must be bloody hard work so I would let him off.

BigToesofFrog · 07/12/2013 17:31

Rofl if you had had the presence of mind to say "Well you're called Santa FFS" :o

LookingThroughTheFog · 07/12/2013 17:38

Mario is a lovely name, and I'm sure he's a lovely boy.

Just checking that people are aware of Santa Clause... translation is Saint Nicolas. I mean, I'm sure you are, but just checking.

Topaz25 · 07/12/2013 18:45

You had me worried with Versace! Mario is much better but it is a bit unusual for a non Italian child and it is going to get a few giggles because of the game. However the santa has a job to do, which involves customer service and being nice to children, so he shouldn't have laughed. He must hear more unusual names than Mario!

thingamajig · 07/12/2013 18:54

I read the OP and was wondering if it was the return of the MNer whose son is called the lovely, traditional Italian name of ................................
Geronimo

3FrenchHenD19s · 07/12/2013 18:57

What's your DS called carolprankster? Does he mind his unusual name? Do worry about poor Mario and the piss taking he's going to have to get used to. I'll have to get him to blame my DH who persuaded me of this name choice.

Wow he said that about Mario? What rudeness and lack of cultural awareness. Liverpool is hardly mono-cultural, I'm really surprised.

I know a couple of UK Mario's . It's a lovely name, Santa needs to get out more.

Antidote · 07/12/2013 19:16

I like the name Mario. Mind you, that might be because I used to work with one and he was fit as fuck Grin

I feel the same about the name Jeremy

bubalou · 07/12/2013 19:29

Mario is a lovely name.

Santa was a twat. Smile X

LaGuardia · 07/12/2013 20:45

Versace? chokes

diddl · 08/12/2013 08:24

"I'd have laughed too..."

Why?

Tara PT's sister is Santa.

Married to Simon Sebag Montefiore-now there's a name & a half!

AndHarry · 08/12/2013 08:45

No, he was rude. Mario is an ace name.

limitedperiodonly · 08/12/2013 09:23

Mean Santa.

I know a Scottish Mario whose mother is Italian so has a Scottish surname and also a thoroughly Italian Sean. I always wonder if Italians can pronounce it but maybe it's become popular there, like Kevin in France.

My English friends both have Italian parents and they called their son Dante which I thought was lovely and entirely fitting with their surname. It probably wouldn't work so well with an English surname but I wouldn't laugh.

Someone in my office sneered that it was pretentious Confused. But then no one takes any notice of her anyway.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 08/12/2013 09:39

I have a Mario too...only he is a Border Terrier Grin. I get laughed at down the park too sometimes. Tell Santa that fat men in red suits really shouldn't throw the first stone!
