to not want to dress my 3YO DD in skinny jeans

DD is very tall and quite stocky which means I have to buy age 5-6 or 6-7 clothes. This puts her into the older girls category as far as clothes manufacturers are concerned and I really struggle to find age appropriate clothes for her. AIBU in not wanting to dress her in skinny jeans and a One Direction top? And thinking that even if she was 5 or 6, I still wouldn't want to dress her like that. The older girls category seems to stretch from 5-11 YO which is a huge age range. Surely there is a massive difference between what is ok for an 11 year old to wear and what is ok for a 5 year old?

Absolutely agreed. My dd also v tall for her age. But actually, even in the younger children's ranges it seems to be impossible to get normal trousers, even for boys. I've had to order off ebay for my 6yo ds just to get trousers that aren't skinny, twisted or cuffed at the bottom. Myu 4yo dd wears leggings or skirts most of the time for this reason.

Skinny jeans are just warmer leggings, way more practical than flappy trousers. They don't get caught in bike chains and go straight into wellies.

Don't know any girl who would wear a OD top non of DD2's friends ever has (or a Hannah Montana one, which were every where when DD1 was younger)

Stocky kids and skinny jeans are not a good mix.

My nephew is a solid child and fashionable trousers for him seem to be skinny cut. So he has mainly plain dark trousers. My sister does like the elastic cuff trousers except for joggers though, so that is something

He's three. My sister and I want to see him in bright trousers.

I think it depends on the shape of your child - mine isn't quite 2 but I have 'skinny' jeans for her, they fit like straight leg jeans but don't drown her & are often softer and are easily tucked into boots.

I struggle to really see how bad they are if leggings are acceptable.

What baba said. My son is one and a half, and I've had to look very carefully to find non-skinny-cut jeans and trousers for him this autumn. They aren't comfortable, especially pulling the close-fitting lower legs on and off for changing, and if anything looks stupider than a baby/small toddler with a big nappy butt and drainpipe legs, I've yet to see it!

Skinny jeans are brilliant for skinny kids.

I have a skinny malinks followed by a child with your DD's dimensions, so I have a vested interest in handing down the skinny jeans to the non-skinny child.

Sometimes they work as thicker leggings, but some of them just never sit right and always look a bit weird.

My main issue with the skinny jeans is actually getting them on her. I have enough trouble getting her dressed in the morning without wrestling with stiff denim. The baggier jeans are much easier to get her leg into and she prefers them too as they are easier for her to run around in. But also, they just look too grown up somehow for a 3 year old. The same issue with the tops-they are quite often slim fitting and she prefers the baggier fit that you tend to get in the toddler sizes. LifeofPo thanks, I will try H&M next time I am in town.

Just think of them as sensible shaped trousers or as DD1and I do - let you wear your nice long boots trousers, neither of us are skinny or have any desire so to be.

Most 3-10y girls have boots as their winter out of school shoes, so they own 'skinny' jeans. To insist on trousers mummy has to help get tidy is just dense.

Likewise with wellies for both sexes, skinny jeans mean no arguments about keeping your trousers in your wellies.

Skinny is just an unfortunate name for a very very practical style of clothing.

You just have to shop around a bit. Next and Fat Face have recently had regular fit jeans as I have bought them for both my DDs (8 and 9). What is it exactly that you dislike about skinny jeans though, agree with a PP that they are like warmer leggings and fit straight into wellies/boots etc. Also, they can be worn with some dresses.
And I haven't come across any 1D tops for either of my daughters, where is it that you're buying clothes? Zara has some gorgeous children's clothes. I bought my DD (8) a lovely grey woollen pleated skirt (actually turned out to be shorts!) and a smart navy long sleeved top with silver stars on it. Nothing brand/merchandised in there, and also lots more options than just jeans.

I still would like to know what shops you've been looking in though, as I find there's so much choice! Debenhams also have a wide range (my local one does anyway, depends on the size of the store I suppose).

I find it very hard to find jeans for dd1 that aren't the skinny jeans. I don't like them on her because she's very slim and they make her look too thin. Of course she doesn't know about that she just wears what I buy no question. Dd2 however suits them and they are easier for her as she robt take them off completely when using the loo :o

But she's a bit more chunky so she she fills them better.

Have you tried looking at the boys' clothing sections? Easier to find plain, non-decorated, non-skinny jeans.

I hate skinny jeans for kids - they're a bugger to get off. I also just hate them. Wouldn't wear them myself, am certainly not buying them for my 5 year old (who's skinny but tall and in 6/7 year old clothing). There are straight leg jeans around but you have to search for them a bit - I've been getting my daughter's from ebay. My other problem is that any pair of jeans seem to fall off her practically non-existent bum regardless of how tight I cinch the waist. My (very slim) 9 yr old hates skinny trousers, but it is hard to find anything else at the moment!

Also agree with you re shirts etc. Nice (non popstar, non disney, non logo, non slogan) ones can be hard to find but it is possible.

My DD wears skinny jeans - IMO they are just like wearing nice thick leggings. But like me, she only wears them with long tops or dresses, like you would leggings.

She actually does like 1D tops, but then she does like 1D. I don't have a problem with that personally

I agree denim jeans don't scale well (wide leged ones can be too stiff and look stupid too).

Coloured jeans and jeggins are much better and some makes stretch better. Next and M&S fit better and have more stretch than our H&M pair (but I find H&M quality really random, another pair might be quite different)

DD2 (who is pretty slight) couldn't get Debenham's kids ones on.

I have a dd who is 6, she has a pair of skinny jeans (I like them), but she won't wear glitter or applique tops, sequins etc - they annoy her. I've never had a huge problem getting tops for her - H&M, Asda, Sainsburys, Tescos, Dunnes - she has tops/checked shirts from all of them. She likes a long sleeved top then a t-shirt on top. She has no One Direction tops, she'd rather wear her pajamas

My four year old wears relaxed skinny jeans. She is very petite so they are excellent for her. She does prefer a skirt or a dress though! My 6 year old son is tall and lean and again skinny jeans look so much nicer. The One Direction top I'd totally advoid!

I hate skinny jeans. I find them uncomfortable and the waist is always at bum crack level when you bend down! So I'm sure my dd would find them uncomfortable too. We end up buying boys jeans or trousers usually.

I used to be a Beaver leader and one little girl always came to sessions in skinny jeans (and other wildly inappropriate clothes but that's another story) when all the other girls were in leggings or joggers. The problem with skinny jeans is that they're not very stretchy so this girl had difficulties doing the splits and cartwheels and things so from that respect they are quite restrictive. Plus she spent half the time pulling them up to prevent "builder's bum" which really isn't something a child should have to worry about! Jegging type trousers are probably better. I don't like how some children are dressed like mini adults though. And I hate overhearing my younger cousins talking about fashion. It just seems like something that shouldn't worry them at that age, clothes should just be something comfy to wear while they are playing!

Pre-puberty, all children are more or less the same shape, so I'd just buy her boys' trousers. DD is 3 and happily wears her brother's hand-me-downs, and I've bought her some new rather than get leggings or skinny jeans. The boys ones often have belts, too, which are far more practical, and larger pockets.

I can't wait for the skinny jean fashion to die out, tbh. I can't stand them, myself, and they're hugely impractical for children due to just how little give they have on small legs.

This is why my nearly three year old either wears joggers or dress and tights most of the time. I wasn't really keen on joggers to start of with as dd had some as a gift, but have got used to them and they are far warmer than anything else around.

We have one pair of normal jeans - tesco and one pair of skinny cords but dd always looks uncomfy in the cords or other skinny trousers in the past.
