Is long hair the rule for little girls??

Back story: my dd had the biggest bald spot I've ever seen, and with such dark hair, it was super obvious (the whole back of her head) and maybe just a little embarrassing :). When her hair grew long, because of the immense bald spot, it was very uneven and just looked feathery. So when it was long enough, I had it cut into a bob, as short at the highest level, at her chin. I thought it was super cute (and chic!) but so many women in my extended family let me know that it was 'too short' and someone actually said 'her haircut does look really cute, BUT LITTLE GIRLS NEED TO HAVE LONG HAIR'. I'm borrowing a phrase from a poster in another thread, but AIBU about the Disnification/Pinkification of little girls? I didn't say anything in response but am burning with resentment, which brings me to the point: what kind of person makes a disparaging remark about a 2 year old's appearance? Who does that??

I'm sure it is chic.

Ignore!

CoffeeBucks · 03/12/2013 23:21

YANBU. whoever said that to you is an idiot.

SantasTessTackle · 03/12/2013 23:23

My DD is 3. She was bald for the first 18months of her life. Now that it has grown to shoulder ish length I am forever cutting and despairing over it.
I miss the bald :(

A good old Mumsnet "did you mean to be so rude" should put those twats in their place.

I bet she looks stunning and tres chic!

RhondaJean · 03/12/2013 23:23

YANBU.

At 2 neither of my daughters had grown enough hair even for a bob.

At 7 dd2 had a Mia farrow haircut and looked amazing.

I have bra length hair but I don't see why they had to have it long, it's more of a hassle, ponytails actually hurt as well.

Totallyunited · 03/12/2013 23:23

It sounds cute. My DD had a chin length bob with a side parting until she was 3.5 and it was gorgeous. I don't like proper short hair on little girls, I don't think they look elfin and pixie like, i think they look like boys but bobs are cute and practical.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 03/12/2013 23:25

I had a thread about this a while back. DD (3) insisted on a short hair cut a year ago. The first hair dresser I took her to refused to cut it short because 'you will look like a boy'. We did eventually get it cut into a cute pixie cut. She's very feminine looking but I am constantly amazed at the people who can't see past the short hair (even when she is wearing a skirt) and call her a boy…

Ignore those who are being rude. Short hair is actually masses easier to look after it turns out. I'm sure your DD looks super cute.

MrsRogerSterling · 03/12/2013 23:28

My dd1 is 7 and has never had long hair, she has always had a bob because she and I like it. Her hair grows fast so she could have long hair if she wanted. All the other girls in her class have long hair.

MorvahRising · 03/12/2013 23:29

I think short hair on little girls looks gorgeous. There is too much hair about these days! Just got DS's school year photo back and all the girls have so much hair, the overall impression is of a sort of hairy haystack.

I bet your DD looks fab.

BlingBang · 03/12/2013 23:30

Not the same for everyone but I actually had a few hang ups that I had very short hair until my teens when my mum let me eventually grow it. I think it did effect my whole self image and self esteem.

squoosh · 03/12/2013 23:33

Shorter hair styles do seem to be out of fashion these days, not sure why, I love seeing little girls with crops and bobs. Also young girls' hair can be quite thin and stringy and to me it seems pointless to keep it long in that case.

Ignore the idiots who tell you that girls must have long hair. You'd swear we were still pre 1920 sometimes.

Picturesinthefirelight · 03/12/2013 23:35

Dd had a lovely bob when she was younger. She only started to grow it around the age if 7-8 when she started taking ballet more seriously as longer hair is easier to get into a bun.

thereyet · 03/12/2013 23:35

Thanks everyone! Really appreciate all your responses! When she develops opinions on grooming, she can go her own way with her hair, but until then, I'm not having a dd with unkempt, stringy long hair!

I've got three, two if which have short hair (my youngest is a straggly mullet haired three year old!). Love, love, love it loads more than when their hair was longer and had to be tied up for school as it looked unkempt. Biggest bonus is the time saving and no battles in the morning to get a brush through it. Have a look on my profile, don't think mine look like boys...but I am biased Xmas Grin

DespicableMa,those are beautiful kids!

DD had virtually no hair on her 2nd birthday. When it grew it was all different lengths so it ended up in a bob to try and even it all up. Now aged 3.11 she is the only girl in her preschool with a bob, all the others seem to have long and straggly. I'm not averse to it, but she won't let me tie it up ever so a clip in the front to keep it out of her eyes is the best I can do, and it stays chin length.

If she ever said she wanted to grow it, fine, but she would need to accept it had to be tied up. She's such a tomboy that I don't think she would go for that. I think she looks cute and actually much neater than the others, it curls under at the ends with no effort and her photos from preschool were perfect! Plus the hairdresser gives her a lolly for sitting still so she's happy to go.

Most of the primary girls seem to have long hair, looking around. It just screams nits at me (traumatic childhood experience). Each to their own.

Tikkamasala · 03/12/2013 23:47

Nothing wrong with a bob at all, especially if the hair is a bit straggly, it definitely looks neater. I agree with you a nice bob can be very chic and cute, just ignore the nonsense comments from people!

squoosh · 03/12/2013 23:51

DespicableMa your daughter's lovely and her bob is just gorgeous. So chic!

DeWe · 03/12/2013 23:52

Long hair doesn't necessarily mean more nits. Out of me and my siblings, the only one who got nits was my brother. My and sisters had long hair. Dd1 has hair you can sit on and has had nits twice-that's in 10 years of school/preschool.

BlingBang · 03/12/2013 23:54

I could only have dreamt of having a bob instead of the boyish short hair I had.

TheZeeTeam · 03/12/2013 23:55

One of my friends has a young daughter who totally rocks her short hair. She is only 5 and styles it herself, wears hats and headbands, etc. She is way too cool for 5!

TheZeeTeam · 03/12/2013 23:55

And I mean a lot shorter than a bob.

kingbeat23 · 03/12/2013 23:56

DD is a nit magnet and only gets them when her hair is loose. I need to be able to plait it up. As long as it's long enough to do that we're both ok. We both have stupidly thick hair and takes an age to comb through. Once she's old enough to have a choice she can make it as long as both of us have no nits.

Quietattheback · 03/12/2013 23:57

I love a bob in a little girl; it looks so darling.

Despicablema - Your girls a gorgeous and I'm v. jealous of your DD's auban hair. Stunning!

softlysoftly · 04/12/2013 00:00

Erm nothing wrong with short hair as long as it's not the hideous bowl cut mum inflicted on me but less of the long hair bashing!

DD1 has beautiful thick long black hair that she allows me to braid and play with which is really relaxing for us both.

DD2 I've so far cut shorter as she would claw me like a feral cat if I dared approach with any form of hairbrush. Both look cute

It's hair do what you want ignore rude people!

HowBadCanThisGet · 04/12/2013 00:01

I put DD1 in a bob until she went to school. Then she realised she was the only girl in the class who wasn't wearing bobbles, so she wanted to grow it out. It looked much nicer short.

I think bobs are more common when they get to 7 or 8
