Is long hair the rule for little girls??

Back story: my dd had the biggest bald spot I've ever seen, and with such dark hair, it was super obvious (the whole back of her head) and maybe just a little embarrassing :). When her hair grew long, because of the immense bald spot, it was very uneven and just looked feathery. So when it was long enough, I had it cut into a bob, as short at the highest level, at her chin. I thought it was super cute (and chic!) but so many women in my extended family let me know that it was 'too short' and someone actually said 'her haircut does look really cute, BUT LITTLE GIRLS NEED TO HAVE LONG HAIR'. I'm borrowing a phrase from a poster in another thread, but AIBU about the Disnification/Pinkification of little girls? I didn't say anything in response but am burning with resentment, which brings me to the point: what kind of person makes a disparaging remark about a 2 year old's appearance? Who does that??

I love little bobs on girls - the amount of little girls I know with hair so long it gets in the way is ridiculous.

AuditAngel · 04/12/2013 00:05

DD1 has her hair to just below her collar, it has a small amount of layering as the curls look better then. It could really do with another cut as at this length it could do with being up for school, plus the weight (well not much of that as her hair is so fine) pulls out the curl sol

DD2's hair is a similar length, but more layered as curlier. A least her hair is a little thicker.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 04/12/2013 00:06

My DD is just 2 and her hair reached halfway down her back

Because I can't be arsed to pay to get it cut and it's a tough enough job for me to cut her fringe (she refuses to wear clips and needs to see)

YANBU why does anyone really care what other peoples childbed hair looks like?!

Works the other way - I know little boys with long hair who get told they look like girls

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 04/12/2013 00:10

DD2 is nearly three and doesn't even have enough hair to cut into a bob. And it's coming in mullety like DS's did.

DD1 is five and a half and has a bob somewhere between chin length and shoulder length depending on when it was last trimmed. She did have properly long hair until the start of this year but she wanted it cut, so we got it trimmed to a couple of inches below shoulder length in the spring and then to chin length over the summer. I'd say most of the girls in her class have hair that's shoulder length or a little below, although maybe 20-25% have properly long hair. Hers is probably, at least when it's recently been trimmed, the shortest out of the girls in her year.

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 04/12/2013 00:12

Oh, and they were BU, absolutely. But you knew that.

BlingBang · 04/12/2013 00:17

Oh how I wanted long hair, used to wear tea towels on my head and was never picked to be Mary or an angel in the nativity. Sure my lack of long hair had nothing to do with it and not holding a grudge, don't under estimate how short hair can affect a young child unless they specifically ask for it. Not talking about bobs here.

synplicity · 04/12/2013 00:20

I don't see why gender stereotypes are so important in this day and age, DS1 has long blonde Curly hair and is often mistaken for a girl (I honestly cannot see why) and wouldn't think of cutting it, If you want to cut her hair short it's YOUR decision, no one else should matter

monicalewinski · 04/12/2013 00:23

I love bobbed hair on little girls - I think it looks cute.

Long hair's good for variety when they're little, but bobs look the best I think.

I know LOTS of kids and yes the majority have predictable long or shoulder length hair but also there are a large number if kids sporting cute bobs or shorter funky boyish crops. Just ignore ignore.

BlingBang · 04/12/2013 00:29

Synplicty - can I ask if you had long or short hair as a young child?

synplicity · 04/12/2013 00:31

Up until around 14 I had basically a shaved head, as I'm a guy

BlingBang · 04/12/2013 00:37

Well then it's not quite the same thing though even a shaved head on a boy can be quite severe.

BitchyFestiveFace · 04/12/2013 00:41

Love short hair. DD had hers cropped last spring (she's eight) and looked fab - she is small and pixie-like anyway so it really suited her. SO much easier to wash and brush, cooler in the summer, gorgeous. It's grown out now to a choppy chin-length bob and looks lovely like this too.

I had short hair as a child and didn't get traumatised by it even though it was a hideous bowl cut, thanks Mum. In fact, I don't remember thinking much about hair or appearance one way or another. I grew it as a teenager and then had a short asymmetric bob when I was 16, before getting it properly cropped at 18. I found a short haircut very freeing Smile

squoosh · 04/12/2013 00:41

Although I prefer crops and bobs on little girls I do think the child should have some choice. A hair cut shouldn't be forced on a child if they hate it, this goes for fussy long styles as well as shorter though.

BlingBang · 04/12/2013 00:48

That's it though. I love short hair and bobs on little girls - just when I was a little girl I dremed of long hair. I wonder if I would have been a different person.

Nocomet · 04/12/2013 01:00

I spent years trying to con DD2 into bobing her fine hair, because it would have looked better (probably still wood, but she loves styling it).

She was having non of it!

DD1 has an amazing auburn mane, which is just meant to be long.

Nocomet · 04/12/2013 01:01

Wood? Would Blush bed I think

IThoughtThat · 04/12/2013 01:03

I love short hair. On girls. My DD's both have really thick hair and it looked too much on them when they were little so I got them bobs. They looked adorable. It was much easier to look after and they NEVER got nits Shock I think they were the only girls in their classes that didn't.

I always liked Tatum O'Neals short hair. It made her look really memorable and beautiful.

Little girls hair is often straggly looking.

My DDs now have long hair

monicalewinski · 04/12/2013 01:05

From about 8 or so crops on girls can look lovely as they're growing into their faces properly by then (not so chubby of cheek!), younger than that it's nicer to have longer hair (bobs are my favourite though over super long).

Functional, sensible short cuts are awful and I can see why it would be upsetting Bling.

I'm not a fan of straggly hair though, so even long hair needs to be trimmed every few months or it looks awful.

BlingBang · 04/12/2013 01:08

Yes - functional, sensible short cut, pretty much sums it up. I don't think my mum could be bothered dealing with long hair. My older sister always had long hair in different styles with ribbons etc - not that I'm holding a grudge!

fortifiedwithtea · 04/12/2013 02:08

Both my girls are very blonde but DD2 hair is also very fine. She had baby hair until the age of 3 and looks better bobbed. However because she did ballet when she was younger and now ice skating she needs long hair to wear up. Also she has to wear a pony tail for school as its long, so she rarely wears it loose. A bit pointless having really.

thebody · 04/12/2013 07:42

any hair style on a little girl is beautiful as long as the little girl thinks it is. short, long, bob.

it's very rude to comment negatively on anyone's appearance.

tell your relatives to acquire some manners op.

on the dreaded nits front, they just come onto any length of hair in any style.

my best tip is hair gel for lads and lots if conditioner for girls to prevent.
always have nit treatment cream in the house and at first sign treat everyone together including mum and dad.

god itching now Grin there is something therapeutic though about treating nits and then combing the dead ones out. like squeezing a huge spot!!

CoffeeTea103 · 04/12/2013 07:43

I personally love long hair on girls, I had really long hair when I was a tot and loved it. But I wouldn't be rude and say something to offend someone for choosing what hairstyle they want on their own baby.

cathpip · 04/12/2013 07:48

My dd is 3 and has very fine fly away hair, if it gets any longer than her chin it looks dreadful. She has a petit filous girl bob and looks very scrummy, she has had loads of compliments!
