Is long hair the rule for little girls??

Back story: my dd had the biggest bald spot I've ever seen, and with such dark hair, it was super obvious (the whole back of her head) and maybe just a little embarrassing :). When her hair grew long, because of the immense bald spot, it was very uneven and just looked feathery. So when it was long enough, I had it cut into a bob, as short at the highest level, at her chin. I thought it was super cute (and chic!) but so many women in my extended family let me know that it was 'too short' and someone actually said 'her haircut does look really cute, BUT LITTLE GIRLS NEED TO HAVE LONG HAIR'. I'm borrowing a phrase from a poster in another thread, but AIBU about the Disnification/Pinkification of little girls? I didn't say anything in response but am burning with resentment, which brings me to the point: what kind of person makes a disparaging remark about a 2 year old's appearance? Who does that??

I had ridiculously long thick hair when I was little (Granny refused to let me cut it- I could sit on it at one point). I always had headaches from the weight of it as it always needed to be in a plait or bun.
I was overjoyed when it was cut (once when I was 5!) and wished my mum had been firmer in sticking to her guns over it instead of giving in to her MIL.

My example is extreme but basically if I had a girl I would cut her hair short (bob or a little longer).

I now have pixie short hair.

missshallot · 04/12/2013 10:26

The correct answer to the statement "BUT LITTLE GIRLS NEED TO HAVE LONG HAIR" is - "Why?"

miaowmix · 04/12/2013 10:29

There is no right or wrong with little girls' hair! I personally love the short, choppy bob look on my DD who is 7, and probably half the girls in her class have a similar 'Petit Filou' style bob. The others have long hair, plaits, braids. All look cute! If hair is very stringy or straggly then short would almost certainly be better and keep it in nicer condition.
Ithoughtthat I LOVe that Tatum O Neal look too. Adore her in Paper Moon.
I figure when they're teens they'll probably all want long hair anyway so may as well crop it now while I still have a say Smile.

My friend is a hairdresser and recently cut her younger DD's (6) hair into a bob with a side parting (no fringe). She looks amazing - really gorgeous in a 1920s sort of way - so cute. It shows off her huge eyes and heart shaped face to perfection.

Her older dd (11) has shoulder length stringy hair which is always unkempt and looks dirty - it isn't, but looks it. Even with long hair, she looks like a boy, so there you are.

specialsubject · 04/12/2013 10:45

little girls have the magic power of looking lovely whatever their hair length, hair style or state of cleanliness.

isn't the standard reply 'did you mean to be so rude?' At some point your daughter is going to start understanding this kind of comment, and like the rest of us she deserves not to have people be rude about her in her hearing.

SomethingkindaOod · 04/12/2013 11:03

DD2 is just 2 and her hair has grown into a beautiful bob on it's own. She has slightly curly hair so it curls up at the ends. It's just above her shoulders and falls beautifully. I think it's going to be kept that length for the foreseeable future.

MummyPig24 · 04/12/2013 11:40

Dd is 3 and she has a short bob. Her hair is very fine and blonde and if it gets as long as her shoulders it starts to look straggly so I keep it short. It looks much nicer and it's easier to handle. I also reason that it will be easier in case she gets nits!

ProfondoRosso · 04/12/2013 11:50

YANBU, bobs are lovely on wee girls. My Goddaughter is the chicest 3 year old in town!

My DSis had very short, almost baldy hair for years when she was wee. And she is just so cute in the pictures.

DespicableMa · 04/12/2013 13:59

Thanks for the Despicable children love Grin. although I should admit that dd2 has dyed hair in the pics, as I gave in during the summer hols.

SlimJiminy · 04/12/2013 14:39

I had a bob when I was little and looking back at the photos, it was really sweet. My mum said she did it like that so it wouldn't get messy as easily. I just wish she hadn't started me off with that ridiculous bowl style

intitgrand · 04/12/2013 16:15

I would say where we live under 6s are about 50:50 bob and long hair

ouryve · 04/12/2013 16:18

Ignore. They're being ignorant.

I never even had hair longer than a bob until adulthood and I very quickly found out why. I have it very short, now. Unlike DS2 and DH, who both have long hair. Unlike me, they have straight, fine hair that grows evenly.

NewtRipley · 04/12/2013 16:19

I work in a Primary School. I'd say until a couple of years ago pretty much all the girls had hair that was a t least shoulder length. I was struck by how uniquitous it was - when I was a girl in the 1970s there were many more of us with short hair. In the last couple of years a few year 4s and aboves have gone properly short

wasabipeanut · 04/12/2013 16:40

Utter bollocks. DD (now nearly 4) has very fine hair. I had it cut into a short, inverted bob when she was about 2 to try and thicken it up a bit and she still has it - and looks gorgeous. I get lots of comments on it - she is blonde and basically looks like she should live in a Petit Filous ad.

Even if she had thicker hair I'd still keep it short and shaped. It looks neater and I don't have the patience to muck about with daily brushing, plaiting etc.

NewtRipley · 04/12/2013 16:48

ubiquitous, not uniquitous

MmeLindor · 04/12/2013 16:53

I am trying to persuade DD to have her hair cut, because I am so bored of long hair on girls. Almost all of her school friends have long hair. I don't think there is a short haired girl in the class.

It is extremely fashionable at the moment but just wait - Jennifer Lawrence is a BIG idol and she's just had her hair cut short, so I think next year will see the scissors coming out.

Your relatives were just plain rude. Ignore them. I love bobs on little girls. I think it looks adorable.

pictish · 04/12/2013 16:54

My dd has short hair, a teeny tiny little cropped bob, and it is very cute!
It's so neat and stylish and and never looks messy or flyaway. I love it.

GreenShadow · 04/12/2013 17:08

I'll differ to the majority but then that's only because I was NEVER allowed to have long hair as a child. Granted my hair is super-curly/fuzzy and to be honest, would probably have been quite a mess and high maintenance - but I was never allowed to find out.

Now I've only got boys, and am missing out on the opportunity to project my desire for long hair on to them!

NewtRipley · 04/12/2013 17:08

I do wonder whether there's a correlation between the whole "Pink" thing and the peddling of a certain view of femininity that goes along with long hair? Just a thought

BlingBang · 04/12/2013 17:25

Bobs are lovely, I could only have dreamed of a bob.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 04/12/2013 17:31

I had the same haircut as my brother until I was a teenager. Everybody thought I was a boy.

I did not enjoy this.

I don't know why my mum thought I should have short hair. It's been long ever since, but she's still on about it. Now it's because I'm nearly 40 and "too old".

LynetteScavo · 04/12/2013 17:35

My DD has a freingeless bob. Always has. It does have to be kept chin level to look chic, though, IMO.

Girls do not need to have long hair. Fact.

smokeandglitter · 04/12/2013 17:39

I have very curly hair and when I was little it grew long, but upwards! So my mum kept it quite short. Out with her one day, wearing a pink dress with flowers on it someone commented on what a pretty boy I was. Hmm

Shorter hair on girls can look lovely. Although, one mother I know of had a daughter who came home with nits, instead of thinking par for the course and buying nit shampoo she shaved her head. The girl was about 7yo with long rich chestnut hair. That I find unreasonable, but a lovely haircut in most styles, lovely!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/12/2013 17:44

My DD (age3) has a sort of pixie crop so very short, like me.

Like a poster above everyone seems to think she is a boy, even if she is dressed head to toe in pink.

So yes, society decrees that short hair = boy (although interestingly long hair on a boy seems to be less confusing).
