I really can't stay - Baby it's cold outside
I've got to go away - Baby it's cold outside
This evening has been - Been hoping that you'd drop in
So very nice - I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice
My mother will start to worry - Beautiful, what's your hurry?
My father will be pacing the floor - Listen to the fireplace roar
So really I'd better scurry - Beautiful, please don't hurry
Maybe just a half a drink more - Put some records on while I pour

The neighbors might think - Baby, it's bad out there
Say, what's in this drink? - No cabs to be had out there
I wish I knew how - Your eyes are like starlight now
To break this spell - I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell
I ought to say no, no, no - Mind if I move in closer?
At least I'm gonna say that I tried - What's the sense in hurting my pride?
I really can't stay - Baby don't hold out
Ah, but it's cold outside

I've got to go home - Oh, baby, you'll freeze out there
Say, lend me your coat - It's up to your knees out there
You've really been grand - Thrill when you touch my hair
But don't you see - How can you do this thing to me?
There's bound to be talk tomorrow - Think of my life long sorrow
At least there will be plenty implied - If you caught pneumonia and died
I really can't stay - Get over that hold out
Ah, but it's cold outside
Oh, baby, it's cold outside
Oh, baby, it's cold outside

I've always thought this Grin

JUST TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER, YOU CREEP!

BunnyLebowski · 03/12/2013 16:17

Dodgy as fuck.

It was written almost 70 years ago though so let's just be glad that we're more enlightened now!

EmpressOfThe7WillowsandTaras · 03/12/2013 16:19

Grin The one that's always bothered me is Homeward Bound, Simon and Garfunkel.

Home, where my love lies waiting silently for me.

Why is she lying silent? Is that what Bound refers to? Or has he killed her?

WorraLiberty · 03/12/2013 16:22

I reckon she was playing hard to get and pretending she wanted to go home Grin

Imagine how short the song would be if it went like this...

I really can't stay - Yeah it's late, time for you to chuff off home.

Callani · 03/12/2013 16:22

I think maybe this was when women were supposed to be reluctant and couldn't out and out say "yep, let's just bed down here tonight" which means they had to play it out like in all those old black and white movies... still comes across creepy though. Hopefully no-one's taking dating tips from a 50 year old Christmas song!

BoJolly · 03/12/2013 16:24

Worra Grin

TheHOHOHOnlyPink · 03/12/2013 16:25

Yadnbu, i was just thinking it today. I see that its supposed to be all coy, but a man that doesn't take no after that much protest is not appealing.

JustAWaterForMePlease · 03/12/2013 16:26

I bet it's not even really snowing.

She really should LTB

Branleuse · 03/12/2013 16:26

I shiver at the thought of Tom Jones not taking no for an answer

mimolette · 03/12/2013 16:26

The creepiest song has to be "Have some Madeira, m'dear"

Branleuse · 03/12/2013 16:27

baby its cold outside,
yeah well id rather freeze

Callani · 03/12/2013 16:27

Haha Worra! Time to chuff off home indeed...

tedmundo · 03/12/2013 16:31

Say, what's in this drink? - No cabs to be had out there

And here was me thinking the dangers of drink spiking was a modern thing ...

JustAWaterForMePlease · 03/12/2013 16:35

You can see where Robin Thicke got his inspiration from.

It can, and has been, sung with the lyrics reversed.

stinkysox · 03/12/2013 16:47

I've always thought Sting's 'Every breath you take' is very stalker-ish

MrsTittleMouse · 03/12/2013 16:51

Sting's "every breath" is about a stalker! Which is way it was so Hmm when it was the fashion to have it as a first dance at a wedding.

sparklysilversequins · 03/12/2013 16:52

In the Simon and Garfunkel song, Kathy was a British girl that Paul Simon fell in love with when he was touring the UK back in the sixties. She was apparently very quiet and gentle and that's where the "love lies waiting silently for me" line comes from. Supposedly. She was his muse and he wrote a number of songs about her.

ipswichwitch · 03/12/2013 16:53

A friend of mine had it as a first dance at her wedding - she thought it was dead romantic but later confessed she hadn't really listened to the lyrics that closely!!

ipswichwitch · 03/12/2013 16:54

Every breath you take I mean!

How do you mean Sashh, with the lyrics reversed?

sparklysilversequins · 03/12/2013 16:55

She's mentioned in "America" too "Kathy, I'm lost I said, though I knew she was sleeping" and "Homeward Bound" was written on that UK tour also and that song was also supposedly about her.

JustAWaterForMePlease · 03/12/2013 16:55

I think the parts reversed, rather than starting at the end!
