to not understand the hatred for the Jeremy Kyle show?

Lazy Sunday with a slight hangover and watched a couple of repeats.

I really don;t understand the criticism for the show. I mean you might not like Jeremy Kyle himself but the show?

No one is forced to go on and they seem to provide excellent aftercare for people. I saw one where a guy made the choice to go to rehab straight after the show (funded by them) and he came back on and had got his life back together.

JK berates vulnerable people because 'I've been doing this for 6 years; I'm 46' etc. As if the solution is that show?! So he had a gambling problem and he has no manners - that doesn't give him the necessary expertise to change lives by 'being honest'. This is TELEVISION FFS.

No ethical psychotherapist would ever advocate getting help by going on TV to be part of a sickening spectacle made purely to satisfy our perverse desire to watch the suffering of others.

shrunkenhead · 01/12/2013 21:29

But as JK always says they could always "put something on the end of it" or "get a job", is that really asking too much???

KerwhizzedMyElf · 01/12/2013 21:40

So because they didn't use a condom or don't have a job that makes them fair game to be mocked on national TV?

digerd · 01/12/2013 21:46

He commands no respect from his guests. They do not stop shouting over eachother when he tells them to, they carry on hurling insults at eachother and ignore him. I cringe. I only enjoy the DNA tests.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 01/12/2013 22:31

Its the trend ATM though, isn't other! People want to know the ins and outs of everyone else's arse holes, as my gran used to say!
It's great if the people in question are celebrities, but even better if the people are "inferior" and good candidates for piss taking and feeling superior over!

SantaIKnowHimIKnowHim · 01/12/2013 22:37

I don't mind Jeremy Kyle himself. I think he talks sense. It's not him I stay away from the programme for and won't watch it. It's all the complete car crashes of people who go on there, and make me despair for humanity.
All this DNA'ing who your child's father is as you don't have a festering clue is what gets me. How can you not KNOW who your child's father is?! Says a lot about you.
If you had a problem with your mum/dad/brother/sister/best friend is national telly REALLY the place to get advice?!
It's just placing yourself in line for ridicule, not advice.

I've seen a few episodes where people are in what seem to be quite abusive relationships, I think they say they don't do lie detectors if there has violence but what about emotional abuse, financial abuse etc? They don't seem to even notice the (mostly) women saying they aren't allowed out / to speak to people / being followed or having their phones checked / having their self esteem stamped on with insults or being threatened with custody battles.

Makes me quite sad when JK is yelling at them about 'well if you weren't in x-persons house then partner wouldn't be suspicious' when they'd actually benefit from someone gently saying 'this isn't ok, you don't have to live like this'.

coffeeandcream · 01/12/2013 23:07

I know a therapist who sees the guests afterwards. Therapist says the show funds three appointments only.

I had the misfortune to catch the end of one of the shows once where a DNA test revealed two gay lovers who had been having a full sexual relationship for five years or more turned out to be full brothers seperated in childhood.

Imagine getting over that in three therapy sessions [grim]

bringbacksideburns · 01/12/2013 23:15

It reminds me of rich people going round Bedlam for amusement a couple of years ago - no different.

Occasionally, very, very occasionally, he'll do a worthwhile show that doesn't involve DNA tests and shouting. Like once a year.

And i really don't understand why he does it infront of an audience. At least Trisha got them asking questions. All they do is provide pantomime noises.

bringbacksideburns · 01/12/2013 23:17

couple of hundred years ago!

ShylaMcClaus · 01/12/2013 23:19

Hate it. Even when little clips are linked on MN I can't stand the shouting. Too close to home. Not my home now, but my previous one.

Graham should be sacked and we all know what Jeremy does when he creeps onto the set in the dead of night regarding the sign saying his name...

thornrose · 01/12/2013 23:22

I stopped watching a long time ago.
I hated it when JK would side with a woman when she came on first and would then proceed to goad the boyfriend when he came on stage. He would be in his face calling him a "little boy" and trying his best to belittle him.
Suddenly he would then switch to being on the boyfriends side and make the woman out to be in the wrong Confused

WestieMamma · 01/12/2013 23:33

I remember the time he had a go at a woman who'd refused to allow her ex into the delivery room. Jezza was furious because the bloke had the right to be there to see his child being born and she had no right to stop him. Hmm

MinesAPintOfTea · 01/12/2013 23:42

Its voyarism at Tyre expense of people who haven't had the advantages I have. Plus its shouty. I don't need to see other Pepe struggling with life and being exploited thanks, I know what benefits I've had in life already thanks.

As for JK saying what everyone thinks, you can't solve years of addiction, deprivation and poor education by shouting at people for an afternoon. Even the tories know that.

MoreThanChristmasCrackers · 01/12/2013 23:42

TBH OP, I don't like the concept of the show and wouldn't waste a minute of my life watching it.
It's up to others what they do, if you like to see car crash tv that's up to you.
People criticise when they have several objections to something, its their right to do this.
I just don't watch it, not difficult.

Weegiemum · 01/12/2013 23:46

I've only ever seen it once. But am pretty sure if he posted on Mumsnet, JK would be branded a "goady fucker" within minutes. Because that's what he is. It's really nasty.

ShylaMcClaus · 02/12/2013 00:06

I sometimes wonder if GF / JK does post on here...

musicismylife · 02/12/2013 00:39

I was about to say human bear-baiting, somebody beat me to it.

He chooses his victims very carefully. And also has inside info from people who know the guests but aren't on the show. I do not believe that he doesn't know the results of DNA tests/lie detector, so treats the guests accordingly.

And the only reason we don't use LD in this country is because they are not accurate. So out of every 100 guests who have undergone the lie detector and 'failed', some of them would have been telling the truth & still called a liar.

Because of all of these factors, he can treat these people with utter contempt and come out the good guy.

Graham is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

shrunkenhead · 02/12/2013 05:31

Exactly, Santa, how can you NOT know who the father of your child is?! Interesting article, BOF.

handcream · 02/12/2013 10:09

The people coming on the show have often had child after child with no thought to the consequences. They often seem to think it's funny. They are rarely working and just move from boyfriend to boyfriend.

People are saying they are victims. I dont think that's the right word. They have made choices. Just like the three young men who burgled my house and attacked my dog. When caught they claimed they were victims of society. Well, that's Ok then.

AmberLeaf · 02/12/2013 10:27

They target deprived areas by leafleting and going round the doors

Yes. They stood outside my childs school handing out leaflets. I missed them that day but spoke to other parents who were given leaflets. I wish I'd seen them, I would have told them exactly what I thought of their show.

Loving all the 'they have choices' comments. Not. A. Fucking. Clue.

handcream · 02/12/2013 10:37

So, who makes these choices?

LaLaLeni · 02/12/2013 10:43

Choices or not, the choice to go on a farcical tv show that exists only for the shallow titillation of those who need to see the misfortunes of other 'lesser beings' shouldn't exist.

Stones, glasshouses...
