to not understand the hatred for the Jeremy Kyle show?

Lazy Sunday with a slight hangover and watched a couple of repeats.

I really don;t understand the criticism for the show. I mean you might not like Jeremy Kyle himself but the show?

No one is forced to go on and they seem to provide excellent aftercare for people. I saw one where a guy made the choice to go to rehab straight after the show (funded by them) and he came back on and had got his life back together.

Rather than just assuming that they provide excellent aftercare, spend a couple of minutes researching- plenty of former guests and people who worked on the show have spoken out about what actually happens behind the scenes.
One article quotes a judge stating that the show is bear baiting in human form, and that the producers should have been stood in the dock along with a man charged with attacking a fellow guest on the show.

mrsjay · 01/12/2013 16:30

I remember they did a special from an Estate somewhere and going into peoples houses to help them with that creep graham

KerwhizzedMyElf · 01/12/2013 16:46

I think they are vulnerable, yes. They may be drug addicts, alcoholics, poor parents, cheating, stealing etc and may be making bad choices but the chances are they have a terrible upbringing and childhood to match. Are you going to know good choices from bad ones if you grew up never seeing good choices? A lot of the guests have depression or other mental health issues which also makes people vulnerable. Some are just 16 years old which again makes them vulnerable to being exploited.

And as for: They have a choice, they have many choices and if every time they choose the wrong path how do you help them?

You certainly don't tempt them with a couple of hundred quid and a night in a hotel (something a lot of them would never be able to afford normally) and whack them on national TV after baiting them for hours. It's exploitation and its wrong.

Sparklymommy · 01/12/2013 16:48

I find Graham very sinister. It makes me sad watching it (my mum watches it). It gives me a headache and I just think that the poor children being fought over are going to need all the luck in the world to cope with life.

It does make me feel lucky to have my loving family, but it makes me so sad for the children having to grow up in those circumstances.

Jebus · 01/12/2013 16:50

I used to watch it years ago and I agree it is a point an laugh at unfortunate people show.

I stopped watching it when I matured and seen JK get in a young woman's face when it was definitely uncalled for.
What gives him the right to tell people how to live their lives even if they do make mistakes or hurt people.

shrunkenhead · 01/12/2013 16:51

I clearly need to look into this more, didn't know anything about them being taxied to the studio earlier than arranged so they didn't have time to shower, put make up on, dress nicely and had often wondered why they went on Telly dressed in trackie bottoms etc when ideally you wouldn't!

Mignonette · 01/12/2013 16:52

I am Confused and Hmm as to why 'Graham the RMN' they use has not faced the NMC for hos involvement in some very questionable 'after care'.

Only1scoop · 01/12/2013 16:56

Used to watch years ago but can't stand it now. It seems to be just a paternity testing service and lie detection service for people who can't afford or organise it for themselves in rl.

justtoomessy · 01/12/2013 16:57

mrsjay what made your organisation start monitoring who goes on there and what happens to them?

I think it is very exploitive but have been guilty of watching it. however, the more I have read about how they are baited etc has meant I rarely watch it now and JK has increased his shouting to massive levels.

shrunkenhead · 01/12/2013 16:59

Good point Only! DNA tests are expensive!

ThanSheSaid · 01/12/2013 16:59

OP, YAB very, very, very, very, very U. Times a million.

I think its a really nasty show. It's voyeristic and puts vulnerable people in awful situations. I think it must do a lot of harm to people.

Horrible show and a horrible nasty host.

mrsjay · 01/12/2013 17:01

well a lot of women the organisation help go on it and they have small children and it really messes with the work they are trying to do iyswim, I think it is more nationally monitored than locally though i am not to sure of the ins and outs i am way at the bottom of the ladder I just know that there has been a vast amount of people on it from a certain part of the UK

Katinkia · 01/12/2013 17:14

I just recently watched a few episodes but find it too noisy to watch. So much shouting! Also, watching girl after girl get dna tests done gets boring.

shrunkenhead · 01/12/2013 17:40

Now we need to know which "certain part of the UK"???? Intrigued dot com.

BMW6 · 01/12/2013 17:44

Trailer trash TV - starring them and watched by them.

shrunkenhead · 01/12/2013 17:48

Officially unmumsnet viewing. Noted.

miffybun73 · 01/12/2013 18:01

It's just really sad, making fun of inadequate, often vulnerable people.

VanitasVanitatum · 01/12/2013 18:16

Jeremy Kyle is a vile, rude, judgmental excuse for a human being, with utterly no compassion or empathy, and absolutely no intention of 'helping' anyone. He just like to stand in judgment over people who are generally the product of terrible parenting and a lack of education or care.

The methods used by his producers are totally immoral.

CoffeeTea103 · 01/12/2013 19:10

I always wonder where on earth do they find these people who go on the show. It's sad watching them degrade themselves for the entertainment of people.

PresidentServalan · 01/12/2013 20:59

I have known people like his guests in real life - sympathy is wasted on them. And JK says what a lot of people think, whether you agree with it or not.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 01/12/2013 21:19

Its disgusting, exploitative, embarrassing, laugh at other people's misfortune, car crash tv of the lowest order. Angry

daisychain01 · 01/12/2013 21:20

It is a misnomer to believe the people on JK have any choice, they have had massive disadvantage since the day they were born - since when has being surrounded by alcoholic / drug dealing families, with school being a place to escape from not learn in, a choice.

They are victims of deprivation, no shadow of a doubt in my mind.

daisychain01 · 01/12/2013 21:22

I don't believe sympathy is called for, but leaving them in peace and not treating human beings like circus freaks is the least we can do in a so-called civilised society.

puntasticusername · 01/12/2013 21:22

"JK says what a lot of people think".

Oh, well that makes it fine then Hmm

(clue: even if true, I do not think that makes it fine).

zatyaballerina · 01/12/2013 21:23

He takes advantage of people who aren't bright enough to understand what they're letting themselves in for, manipulates them to make absolute tits of themselves and puts them up for public mockery.
