To leave my 12 year old at home with sleeping toddler for 5 mins?

Would you leave a 12 year old dd at home with 19 month old asleep in bed for 5 mins to pop down the road to collect other child from an activity? Their dad isn't home at that time so if I decide not to then child won't be able to go to said activity.

Seems perfectly acceptable to me so long as sensible rules such as not answering door etc are applied.

Artandco · 29/11/2013 16:56

I would. Tell them if child wakes just take them out cot and play/ read book in the bedroom until you return

bigTillyMint · 29/11/2013 16:57

Yes.

If DD is a sensible, responsible type 5 minutes should be OK. Some 12 year-olds are very mature and some not.

Marrow · 29/11/2013 16:58

I would but would tell them if child wakes to not take out of cot but read a story or give them some toys to play with in there.

Bubbles1066 · 29/11/2013 16:58

Yes I would.

Francagoestohollywood · 29/11/2013 17:01

Of course I would

PisforPeter · 29/11/2013 17:01

Yes, I would

Doppledanger · 29/11/2013 17:01

Once the baby is alseep she very rarely wakes so I am fairly confident there would be no probs there, and 12 year old is a very sensible type.
I've just got my mums disapproving face in my mind telling me I'm terribly irresponsible ( I think she forgets she let us play out all day from about 5!)

For me it would depend solely on the 12 year old, I could of done it when I was 12, my brother could not. If you think she is sensible enough then go for it!

daytoday · 29/11/2013 17:03

No I wouldn't. Absolutely not.

Not a toddler that young. I certainly wouldn't let them take them out cot.

A bit older and verbal yes, say 3 then yes.

neverthebride · 29/11/2013 17:06

Absolutely fine imo x

rainbowfeet · 29/11/2013 17:06

I would no problem doing that & my dd is 11 & ds 2 Smile

RedHelenB · 29/11/2013 17:07

A 12 year old is capable of lifting a toddler out of a cot!

usualsuspect · 29/11/2013 17:07

Yes I would.

ProfessorSong · 29/11/2013 17:07

I have, I left my then 14 month old (sleeping) dd1 with my then 12 year old DSD whilst I popped to the Co-op, I was gone 10 minutes. They were both fine.

freckledleopard · 29/11/2013 17:08

I'd let DD (also 12, nearly 13) babysit a child of that age for a few hours, so yes, of course it's ok.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/11/2013 17:08

Yep. I'd say that's fine in the circs

waterrat · 29/11/2013 17:16

Of course it's fine - 12 year olds in many cultures look after younger siblings all the time

And a generation ago in this country you would have seen 7 year olds taking care of toddlers while their mums did shopping or cleaning

We seriously over coddle children here !

rabbitlady · 29/11/2013 17:17

very unreasonable. a 12 year old is not ready to take responsibility of the life of a toddler and you are unreasonable to expect it.

as a child, i was often left to care for my brother. i was determined i would never inflict this on a child of my own.

dancemom · 29/11/2013 17:18

Yes - some 12 year olds have babies of their own!

IneedAsockamnesty · 29/11/2013 17:20

It very much depends on your postcode and social economic group

Topseyt · 29/11/2013 17:25

Totally fine I would say, providing your 12 year old is of the more mature and responsible variety.

My eldest daughter (now 18) would have been fine for a few minutes with a toddler when she was 12. My now 15 year old middle daughter perhaps a bit less so, but my now 11 year old youngest would be OK, I am sure.

daytoday · 29/11/2013 17:28

I don't mean the 12 year old cant lift them out the cot. I just think 19 months is prime 'shove it in your mouth' time so think being in cot safer.

Also, if its just 5 mins down road can't you take baby?
