YANBU. and not U to be Sad either. We had them once, I couldn't believe how tiny they were.

BornThisCrazy · 28/11/2013 16:17

Yanbu. I had to throw out both rice and flour (huge quantity as we use lots), as the little feckers were everywhere, wriggling away.

Crowler · 28/11/2013 16:17

Uh, NO YANBU.

So sorry for you precious. I've had mice as of late and frequently find myself reduced to a hysterical child.

saulaboutme · 28/11/2013 16:21

yanbu I found them in my cupboard last night. Flour, herbs etc all in the bin!

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 28/11/2013 16:24

Crowler I screamed the house down when at 3.30 in the morning one ran past me and under the bath. I swore I'd heard scrabbling and scuffles for weeks but dh didn't believe me. Also found silverfish the last time I went to make pancakes. Prompted a big clearout though. So it had its benefits. My gran would have sifted them out. :o

DeepThought · 28/11/2013 16:24

I got an influx of flour mites in blasted organic flour

pffffft

bleached flour all the way now

ps you can freeze the flour to kill the critters then sieve out their little dead bodies no chance

dorothyparka · 28/11/2013 16:25

Keep flour in the freezer and you won't get mites Smile

SomethingkindaOod · 28/11/2013 16:26

My grandma told me to sieve them out when I got them. I tried to do it and then get on with what I was baking but seriously couldn't bring myself to use the flour!
Binned the lot.

NewName123 · 28/11/2013 16:26

flour beetles? I put all dried goods in plastic bags now other wise they burrow though

Crowler · 28/11/2013 16:36

Silverfish in the flour.

You guys are seriously stressing me out.

Bunbaker · 28/11/2013 16:39

I wouldn't even use flour after the mites had been sieved out. Flour mite poo anyone?

Unfortunately some bags of flour just have flour mites in already. I always keep dried goods in airtight containers so if I get flour mites in one product they can't get into another.

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 28/11/2013 16:41

It just made me think of the amount of tasty treats with baked in mitey pooey goodness I may have consumed over the years. :o

MrsHoratioNelson · 28/11/2013 16:42

You need lock and load lock flour boxes. You can put the bag straight in. Little bastards can't get into them.

DeepThought · 28/11/2013 16:53

I shan't tell you about my maggoty porridge oats then, Crowler

OHforDUCKScake · 28/11/2013 16:58

This happened to me in the summer. I never use white sugar so it'd been sat in the cupboard for years. Got it out to use as I was too low on brown sugar for the recipe and the sugar was crawling. Couldnt find them in any other item but chucked it all out anyway and scrubbed the kitchen from top to toe.

it needed it

birdybear · 28/11/2013 16:58

I didn't think flour mites, get in, as such. I thought they were always there but just hatch if you don't use the flour quick enough?

wem · 28/11/2013 17:01

Yep birdybear, the little bastards are there already. The plastic tubs just stop one bag of old flour contaminating everything else.

SomethingkindaOod · 28/11/2013 17:02

Right so I just just sieve it and use Grandma?? Confused

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flour_mite

gamerchick · 28/11/2013 17:06

Well they're already there.. They just hatch put.

Keep flour in the freezer so they can't hatch. Same principle for fruit so nothing hatches out of those either.

MonkeyGoneToHeaven · 28/11/2013 17:08

I found them inside a plastic tub of bicarbonate of soda the other day. How on earth did they get in there - and how can they possibly live in bicarbonate of soda?

I think it is peanut butter which is legally allowed a high-ish proportion of 'insect fragments' and tinned mushrooms have an allowable proportion of maggots. Seriously, if you thought about it too much you'd never eat anything at all.

Spookey80 · 28/11/2013 17:10

I had this once too. I was so disturbed by it. Really horrible. Have a bit of a fear of it happening again!

AdoraBell · 28/11/2013 17:11

Yeah, but in Grandma's defence Wiki probably wasn't available when she was a-sieving.

And my late father used To tell me I'd have To eat a peck of dirt before it killed me. Thanks, but no Thanks dad.

YANBU OP

oscarwilde · 28/11/2013 17:21

Wiki says they are harmless even if eaten..... Extra protein anyone Grin

BadgersRetreat · 28/11/2013 17:29

apparently sticking a bay leaf in your flour discourages them

I have NO idea if this works Grin

RubyGoat · 28/11/2013 17:34

We had this a few weeks ago. Binned about £20 worth of flour & other stuff that we couldn't afford to replace at the time. Angry
