To put tights on my son?

He is 4 and has been wearing tights during the winter since he was a baby because they dont to long johns in small ages and i was getting his older brother LJs and the tights were cheap in asda. They are plain black not pink and glittery.

A few weeks ago i was dressing him and asked him to grab himself some socks, he said "i want tights instead" so i started putting them on him when ds1 ( 8) shouted in "erm, X (their dad's partner) doesnt really like him wearing tights" i replied that if ds wanted to wear them then it wasnt really anyone's business and left it at that.

Dcs have come home from a weekend at their dad's and ds1 asks me "did you get ds2's tights in the girl aisle or the boy aisle?" I asked him if someone had been talking about ds2's tights and ds2 said that "daddy and X told me tights are for girlies" Hmm

Is this really an issue? Confused AFAIC they're an extra layer to keep him warm til he is big enough for LJs and he likes wearing them. He will be big enough for his brothers now outgrown LJs next year and still fits in the tights at the minute so why would i not put them on him? I honestly cant believe two adults would tell a child this about his clothes and try and make him feel wrong for wearing them. He is 4 fgs.

DS definitely needs them atm: he's walking so can't wear snow suits with feet but still gets tired and has to be carried. His (boy from h&m)) tights mean his legs don't have bare skin getting icy.

Plus the extra later keeps him toasty.

How many of those of you who think tights are unnecessary for warmth are spending a few hours at a time outdoors in winter?

silverten · 25/11/2013 09:07

How sad that these sorts of ideas get forced on such small children who are far too young to think about anything other than comfort. It's such a shame we can't just let them be for a bit.

I'm with you OP.

There's a good quote I got from another thread here which is quite apt in considering the 'urgh' comment:

"“Girls can wear jeans and cut their hair short and wear shirts and boots because it’s okay to be a boy; for girls it’s like promotion. But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading, according to you, because secretly you believe that being a girl is degrading.”?—?Ian McEwan, The Cement Garden (1978)"

We always wear tights in winter. Dh looks at his best when we've just come in from skiing and just walking around in long johns :). And visiting any friends in Europe all children wear ski trousers outside when it's cold/ snows with just tights underneath, so when they come inside they just take them off and the children all play in jumpers and tights only. None seem concerned about it or laugh. All childrens ages

Those saying you never wear, do you go outside lots? Or use the car a lot? 2/3/4 hours outside in winter anywhere in the uk leaves you cold. It's ok out for 30 min dash between shops, but walking across commons/ parks/ moors with little ones who stop to pick up leaves/ sticks/ climb trees for hours surely leaves everyone cold

Ha, I was just telling my 15 year old ds this morning about how I used to dress him in tights until he went to school.

Why would you not want your little boy to have warm legs?

As I type he is on his way to a cup rugby match. Wearing tights for 5 years doesn't appear to have affected his masculinity Grin

latebreakfast · 25/11/2013 12:30

Lots of places you can order "officially boys tights" from if somebody's worried about catching gay.. here ... and here ... and here ... H&M.

So, absolutely YANBU. If he's warm and comfy then ignore the comments.

SaucyJack · 25/11/2013 12:49

My daughters always wore tights under their trousers as toddlers. Can't imagine why it would suddenly become weird for a boy to do the same thing. Very sad attitude.

Fakebook · 25/11/2013 12:50

DS has also been wearing tights since he was a baby. He's 2 in January. He's wearing Dd's old school tights today (ASDA size 5-6 aren't sized very well and shrink after washing once).

I got told by someone that it was weird when he was 9 months. Just ignore stupid comments.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 25/11/2013 13:15

Grin @ themaltese!

Well i ordered a pair of spiderman ones from ebay this morning as a xmas present for ds and i know he will love them (was going to get spiderman pants but i think he'll appreciate the tights more) and we talked about superman and batman and robin all wearing tights because being a superhero means being outside loads and superheroes are experts at keeping warm. Tbh i dont care if he repeats any of it to his dad And gf as long as ds is happy with it. If he wasnt he just wouldnt wear tights- he's not the most biddable child Grin

I actually think little boys look very sweet in tights and French style shorts. Prob up to around 5, but very one in France seems to dress them like that. They actually have 'winter' shorts to wear with them

NotAQueef · 25/11/2013 13:22

yanbu - I would put them on my son if I could get him to wear them (he is really funny about clothes in general!)
However ... I have just had a quick google and tthese thermals come in age 2-3 3-4 & 4-5 and would make a good base layer.
Might get some for DS as they don't have feet so he might just allow me to put them on him.

AnyFuckersfrogslegs35 · 25/11/2013 14:10

My DS's all wore them when it was very cold.
The country I'm in currently have boys and girls sections for tights - all little boys wear them here - if they didn't I suspect they'd be quite a few adult males without balls, having had them frozen off in minus 30 degree winter temps :)

YANBU

My step F worked outside and he used to wait for my Dm to ladder her tights, then he'd claim them for under his overalls - we used to take the piss as kids but he had the right idea ;)

farrowandbawl · 25/11/2013 14:16

Let me introduce to you my family:

Mother side - landscape gardeners - all wear tights/leggings/longjohns

Fathers side - engineers - all wear tights/leggings/longjohns

Millitary - they are issued with longjohns.

DS wears leggings under trousers. As do I and DD and almost everyone else I know.

Exp - electrician, he and his workmates all wore tights/thermals

Friend - bouncer - tights, says "if it's good enough for superman and Robin Hood, it's good enough for me"

DSs teacher wears cycling tights under his trousers.

With us now, you are weird if you don't have something on under your trousers (the extortionate heating bills helped with that too)

It's your ex who is the weird one for several reasons:

a) Why the fuck would you let your kids get cold?
b)tights are not just for girls and never have been and you can go back hundreds of years for proof of that.
c) Batman, Superman, The green lantern, Flash and god knows how many more ALL WORE TIGHTS.
d) he's a dick.

hillbilly · 25/11/2013 14:20

DS used to wear tights in the winter - why ever not?

absentmindeddooooodles · 25/11/2013 15:02

I really really hate this bloody gender stereotyping.

I have a 2.8yo ds. He loves pink, dolls, dressing up, handbags....aswell as cars, helicopters, trains and anything with an engine.

He deaperatley wanted a pair of leggings. They were purple and green. Hes going through a real choosing his own clothes thing...so I bought them.

He came home from nursery crying saying " me a boy mummy" over and over.

One of the nursery workers there had told him they were for girls, and a 4yo boy had teased him all day. He was so bloody proud of those leggings....and that was the response he rexieved.

It just pisses me off....girls are ok to be comfy and warm in tights and leggings. They hug the leg well, dont ride up and are comfy and non restrictive.

But if you have a penis.....its a no. Jeans/chinos/joggers...all fine but still ride up and can be restrictive.

Im going to buy ds some black or steipey leggins....hes constantly climbing and doing wierd gymnastic type moves so much comfier for him.

Bubbles1066 · 25/11/2013 15:23

My son wore tights when he was a baby, they were boys blue ones from H and M. Just like my DH wears long johns when out in the cold.

2Tiredtocare · 25/11/2013 15:24

Thanks latebreakfast I've just bought a pair of little titans tights for my sock hating DS Grin

RubyGoat · 25/11/2013 15:49

Tights aren't just for girls!

Dancers

Captain America

Marvel Heroes

superheroes in tights

squoosh · 25/11/2013 15:52

Scandinavian boys wear tights in the cold weather. It's not a 'girlie' thing, it's a 'keeping warm' thing.

Daddy's partner needs to keep her beak out.

Mumsyblouse · 25/11/2013 15:55

I can't get my girls (aged 8 and 10) to wear tights. They hate the tight waistband, the fact that the gusset slips and they have to keep pulling them up. They also get too hot and sweaty in their over-heated classrooms in them.

Nothing will convince them tights are acceptable clothing, I wish I had nice amenable toddlers again who would just put them on and keep warm!

elliejjtiny · 25/11/2013 16:01

My younger boys aged nearly 3 and 5 months wear tights. Keeps them warm and I don't have to pair up all their socks.

diddl · 25/11/2013 16:02

If it's cold enough-fine!

It's a regular thing here-Germany.

I'm sure that a lot of them don't need it though!

MySweetPrince · 25/11/2013 16:03

YANBU - My DD's boyfriend pinched a pair of her ribbed woollen tights to wear under his jeans a few weeks back as it was so cold out. I haven't seen them since so he obviosly finds them warm and comortable. He's 22.

CosyTeaBags · 25/11/2013 16:14

I used to tell my Sister to put tights on her DS when he was crawling - his socks would always come off and he would get carpet burns on the tops of his feet.

I thought tights would have been the perfect answer - she poo poohed me and persisted with his pathetic socks and grazed feet.

Next time, can you paint his toenails pink just before he goes to stay with his father - that will give them something to talk about Wink

MrsOsbourne · 25/11/2013 16:35

Both my DC wore tights as babies and small children.
Both were experts at discarding socks when it was cold.
DD would be in her pushchair and cosytoes, bring a leg out and haul at the toe of her tights until she looked like an elf .Grin
She and her brother wore soft cotton polonecks with tights and then a snowsuit or under the cosytoes in winter.
Indoors they would wear the poloneck and tights and slide around on our wooden floors !
They looked so cute but DS still does age 17, he will wander about in his longjohns .He couldn't give a stuff what his mates think because he likes being warm.

mrspremise · 25/11/2013 16:45

Tights on babies and toddlers and children (and adults) is fine. Her weird opinion says more about her than it does about you. Little ones sre happier when they're warm and cosy. Parents are happier when they're not picking up the same sock every 20 seconds
