To put tights on my son?

He is 4 and has been wearing tights during the winter since he was a baby because they dont to long johns in small ages and i was getting his older brother LJs and the tights were cheap in asda. They are plain black not pink and glittery.

A few weeks ago i was dressing him and asked him to grab himself some socks, he said "i want tights instead" so i started putting them on him when ds1 ( 8) shouted in "erm, X (their dad's partner) doesnt really like him wearing tights" i replied that if ds wanted to wear them then it wasnt really anyone's business and left it at that.

Dcs have come home from a weekend at their dad's and ds1 asks me "did you get ds2's tights in the girl aisle or the boy aisle?" I asked him if someone had been talking about ds2's tights and ds2 said that "daddy and X told me tights are for girlies" Hmm

Is this really an issue? Confused AFAIC they're an extra layer to keep him warm til he is big enough for LJs and he likes wearing them. He will be big enough for his brothers now outgrown LJs next year and still fits in the tights at the minute so why would i not put them on him? I honestly cant believe two adults would tell a child this about his clothes and try and make him feel wrong for wearing them. He is 4 fgs.

Why is it odd? It's simply another layer of clothing to keep a small boy warm?
Basically like long-johns with feet in!
By the way, eBay do the most gorgeous 'boys' leggings with Lightning McQueen/Angry birds etc on the bottom - so adorable!

moreyear · 24/11/2013 21:36

I don't understand at all how it is 'odd' to put woollen tights on a boy when it is cold? They are lovely and warm, they let me extend the use of his shorts, they look adorable - I fail to see what the issue is?

I love my son's tights - argyle, spotted, striped, cable knit...and now his sister can wear them.

OP I am with you :) Your ex and his partner sound unbelievable narrow minded.

OutragedFromLeeds · 24/11/2013 21:37

YAsoooNBU

Anyone who thinks tights are fantastic if you have a vagina, but odd or 'ugh' if you have a penis are suffering from some sort of reduced mental capacity imo. They're warm and practical regardless of your genitalia.

joanofarchitrave · 24/11/2013 21:38

ds could remove his socks literally 40 times on the walk into town (I counted once) and I didn't like him having naked feet and ankles in the winter, so of course he wore tights.

He seemed perfectly comfortable in them - baby ones tend to be a higher natural fibre content so nil itching that I saw.

If you don't usually speak to his dad, I would just feed him a few lines - refer to them as 'long-johns' or 'superhero bottoms' or whatever you think best. I think the spiderman ones are genius.

It is incredible how fragile masculinity appears to be as a concept.

KatAndKit · 24/11/2013 21:40

I have just bought my DS a lovely pair of multicoloured striped tights. As far as i am concerned they are a unisex colour and they stop cold air getting up his trousers when he is in the buggy or sling.

MrsGarlic · 24/11/2013 21:41

Glad I read this thread. I put my son in tights which he wears under his trousers. I myself wear tights under my jeans in cold weather and it helps enormously. Plus (he is crawling) his socks always fall off, and his trousers ride up. I'm pleased I'm not the only one!

AuditAngel · 24/11/2013 21:42

I was in Sainsbury's today and they had twin packs of long johns. I didn't check the sizes, but there were lots.

I didn't put DS in tights when he was small, probably because he was my first. He does love a pair of long johns though, and a thermal vest. A friend at school was being teased recently for wearing a thermal vest, and DS just said "well, we won't be the ones who are cold will we?"

MrsRandom78 · 24/11/2013 21:42

I don't think YABU (and have out my DS in tights before now!), but you can get kids thermals on amazon for about £6. Cosy!

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 24/11/2013 21:42

Well i dont have girls but i have done it all my life myself and still do so for me it was just a logical thing to do for warmth so carried it on with the dcs. Exp wasnt around for the early years of their lives so this will be the first winter he'll have had anything to do with actually dressing the dcs and being aware if the fact ds2 is wearing tights.

Having said that, one Christmas play all DS's year had to wear an adults white t-shirt (with tinsel) and white tights, including boys.

MrsPresley · 24/11/2013 21:45

OP I'm 50 and my parents have a photo of me around 6 months old sitting with my 2 male cousins who who be around 18 months and 3 at the time, both my cousins are wearing pale blue tights under their short romper type things so obviously boys tights have been around for a long time.

Theas18 · 24/11/2013 21:46

Tights in boys is normal in places that are "proper cold". Friends that lived in Austria found it a revolution in small boy comfort ant warmth.

intitgrand · 24/11/2013 21:50

Crikey some wussy boys on here! where do you live? Lapland?
My boys have managed in trousers and never complained about feeling cold.
It's not even that cold yet? I hope your 4 yo isn't at school he would never live it down!

gwencooper81 · 24/11/2013 21:50

Many years ago when I was at primary school, loads of the boys wore navy /black or dark green tights under their trousers.
Nothing silly about wanting to be warm and nothing to do with anyone else!

intitgrand · 24/11/2013 21:53

There is NO WAY I would let my naïve reception age child be seen on stage in tights. They will be absolutely mortified by it a few years down the line. Why give fodder for them to be teased a few years down the line!
What would be wrong with cricket trousers ?

gwencooper81 · 24/11/2013 21:58

Wussy? Really?! Maybe it's not freezing cold just yet but it will be soon.
We saw a young boy with a dress over his trousers at soft play today and my two children, one reception aged didn't bat an eye.
It's only an issue when parents make it one. Each t their own, let the lad wear tight op!

candycoatedwaterdrops · 24/11/2013 21:58

intitgrand Wussy boys? Hmm Do you feel the same way about girls? I often wear tights under trousers for several months during the winter. I just don't find trousers warm enough.

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 24/11/2013 21:59

I recently saw a small boy - aged about 3 - in tights. They had tractors all over them. His mum said they came in a pack, the others had lorries and diggers. She said she'd been sent them by a friend in, I think, Finland. They obviously know how to dress for the cold there.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 24/11/2013 22:22
Grin

He is at school and he is living it down without issue. I am guessing his classmates dont give a shiny shite Grin

I would also love a definition of 'wussy'

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 24/11/2013 22:24

I had no idea adults would wear tights under trousers either, MN can be a real eye opener.

moreyear · 24/11/2013 22:29

Gee Intitgrand - I hope your son never gets a starring roll as Peter Pan. Wink

RosebudTheCat · 24/11/2013 22:31

YANBU to put him in tights if you want, but FYI I got DS some LJs in size 3-4 years in M&S recently.

3littlebadgers · 24/11/2013 22:32

Let him wear the tights. We lived in Turkey and they used to sell tights covered in footballs and rockets for the boys.

Goldenbear · 24/11/2013 22:32

I don't think there is anything wrong with tights. I recently bought long johns for my DS who is 6 from Sainaburys and for my DD who is 2. I bought some Long Kohns from Asda when he was 2-3 for the walk to nursery. We walk almost 2 miles to school which is very near the coast so it can get very, very cold!
