AIBU to think they should have checked with MN before naming their children?

My P1 son has brought home his first Biff Chip and Kipper books.

Being from America I did not read these at his age.

AIBU to think their names are ridiculous and their mum should have check the baby name boards before naming them thus?

I quite like chip!!

TEEARDIS · 19/11/2013 15:28

Really?

They're nicknames, given to them by the youngest child. Kipper is really Christopher, and Biff is Beth, Kipper couldn't say their names properly and that's what came out. Chip is really David, I think, but I can't remember why they call him Chip.

All my illusions are shattered, ChrohnicallyTired.

Chip is quite an American name though, isn't it? Short for Chip off the old block.

TEEARDIS · 19/11/2013 15:32

Is it? I didn't not grow up with anyone named Chip!

BadgersRetreat · 19/11/2013 15:32

Chip is short for Charles usually.

and Charles is such a nice name too....

spanky2 · 19/11/2013 15:33

I have thought this too. Kipper ? Really ?Grin

SueSueHeck · 19/11/2013 15:34

Pretty sure that Biff is actually Barbara.

TEEARDIS · 19/11/2013 15:35

Oh great, now I don't know if it's Barbara or Beth!

And he has to read these for years, doesn't he?

Snatchoo · 19/11/2013 15:36

Yep Grin

FunnysInLaJardin · 19/11/2013 15:36

thank god DS1 is on Read Write Inc. I used to loathe those stories, they were rubbish

TEEARDIS · 19/11/2013 15:37

Crap.

Funnys, what is read write inc, my son has just change school part of the way through y1 and is now talking about read, write inc.

We didn't do ORT but did some other books when we were kids.

LittleNoona · 19/11/2013 15:39

There was an article in the mail on a child named "Geezer"

I did wonder how that one would go down on the mn baby name boards! Grin

Tallaween · 19/11/2013 15:39

Biff is Barbara.

Their names are Christopher, David and Barbara.

Their surname is Robinson.

How do I even know this shit, honestly.

WhereBeThatBlackbirdTo · 19/11/2013 15:41

Geezer has a sister called Hendrix.

Anyway - Biff is Barbara

TEEARDIS · 19/11/2013 15:41

I don't know Talla but I'm impressed!

BlinkeyBlimey · 19/11/2013 15:41

I wish they had given them 'normal' names - they bizarre. Even after reading them three times over (ie 3 kids) I still can't remember who is who (apart from the dog).

FunnysInLaJardin · 19/11/2013 15:42

Where, it's a really good (IMO) reading scheme and helps the children to read in a very logical way using rhymes and such like. DS1 really struggled with his reading until he started this scheme and now aged 7 can read and enjoy loads of books including Roald Dahl etc. I don't think he would have managed that without RWI

Tallaween · 19/11/2013 15:44

Apparently they gave them those names because it was unlikely that children reading the books would be called Biff, Chip or Kipper and get teased about it.

+Fondly remembers Peter and Jane+

+Names next child Biff, for spite+

TEEARDIS · 19/11/2013 15:50

See I assumed Biff was a boy until I actually looked at the book.

I know a Chip who was Robert in RL (his dad was also Robert, so why they didn't go for Bob, Rob or Bert I have no idea).

GhostsInSnow · 19/11/2013 16:19

Geezer I assume is named after Geezer Butler, guitarist with Black Sabbath, however, its a nickname and his real name is Terrance Grin

Poor kid has enough to deal with without a name like bloody Geezer.

Tulip26 · 19/11/2013 16:29

My sister's daughter was reading these when her baby sister was born. When asked "what should we call the new baby?" she said Kipper... :D

No, they didn't stick with it!
