AIBU to think they should have checked with MN before naming their children?

My P1 son has brought home his first Biff Chip and Kipper books.

Being from America I did not read these at his age.

AIBU to think their names are ridiculous and their mum should have check the baby name boards before naming them thus?

Fondly remembers Peter and Jane

We had Dick and Dora Hmm

TEEARDIS · 19/11/2013 17:00

I apparently had Dick and Jane and Spot.

I vaguely remember that.

There are worse names than Biff.

summertimeandthelivingiseasy · 19/11/2013 17:34

Someone has thoughtfully posted copies of Dick and Dora here

I had Peter and Jane at a previous school. I vaguely remember having a stand-off with my teacher at "I throw the ball" which I thought should be "I throws the ball" Since the blonde girl in the picture must be called "I" She didn't like me at all :(

Work in a school that uses ORT. I really dislike the whole thing actually I want to shove the utterly bloody magic key where the sun doesn't shine

BerstieSpotts · 19/11/2013 17:41

I didn't have a reading scheme with characters :( I think we had "Open Door" books.

Tallaween · 19/11/2013 17:41

Peter and Jane had a dog called Pat didn't they.

And they did terribly gender specific things like climb trees (Peter) and play with dolls (Jane). We all liked the dog. It was a bit wanky.

New word: wanky

GwendolineMaryLacey · 19/11/2013 17:43

I feel better now that I know they are nicknames. I was so distracted by wondering who the hell calls their kid after a particularly stinky fish that I forgot to listen to dd1 reading!

SoonToBeSix · 19/11/2013 17:44

Op we didn't read them as children either they are recent books. We read Peter and Jane.

CrohnicallyTired · 19/11/2013 17:48

Why did I think it was Beth then? Maybe because it sounds more like Biff than Barbara?

If you think Biff, Chip and Kipper are boring, I grew up with Ginn reading books.

Look!

Look!

Look!

The next book had

Look in here!

falls asleep

Groovee · 19/11/2013 18:18

Both my children only read them for P1. I do love Floppy.

TEEARDIS · 19/11/2013 18:21

I am going to write new ones.

Tarquin, Chuck and Brian, their two mummies, 3 dogs and gerbil.

They live next to Michael, Sara and Jane, their two daddies, one of whom has ASD.

Biff, Kipper and Chip live next to them with their dog an mum and dad.

It's a whole neighbourhood.

How do you know their real names ? Is all revealed in a story called 'Identity Theft' once

BikeRunSki · 19/11/2013 18:24

... We get onto long words?

I learnt to read in French. Peter and Jane's French cousins were Daniel et Valerie, they lived a la ferme.

ercoldesk · 19/11/2013 18:25

I loved Biff and Chip. GCSE text books are not nearly as snuggly.

AlwaysInBed · 19/11/2013 18:40

I remember seeing a user called TheMagicKeyCanFuckOff (or PissOff? Something like that). So true.

DoctorDonnaNoble · 19/11/2013 18:47

I did the Ginn books and a bit of a Roger Red Hat as well. Fortunately for me my first primary teacher knew I could read already so I wasn't stuck on the godawful first book (which was a glorified picture book) for weeks. I devoured the school reading books rapidly and was one of the youngest 'free readers' in school beams smugly whilst reading Roald Dahl

JohnnyUtah · 19/11/2013 18:47

Omg Roger Red hAt. My kids' primary school still had some of those this century. They did the job I suppose. The village with three corners, I think?

Tattiesthroughthebree · 19/11/2013 19:05

I know a Biff, short for Elizabeth (or Elizabiff, as she called herself when a toddler) But ORT Biff is definitely Barbara.

shouldnthavesaid · 19/11/2013 19:12

I did Ginn, I loved them. I vividly remember there being a family with 'Ben and Liz'. Further up the books got more interesting and you ended up learning more than how to read.. Some I wouldn't mind reading again haha!

Mouldypineapple · 19/11/2013 19:19

This is really interesting. My dd is only 3 but Biff Chip Kipper etc are slowly creeping into our library at home and the names constantly irritate me! As they are nicknames it makes more sense. But yes, how do you know??

Bring back Peter and Jane I say. Although I do have a couple of Janet and John books lying around and they are the most tedious book ever!

thebody · 19/11/2013 19:23

fucking hate the bloody stupid stories. oldest is 23 youngest 13 and now I work in a reception class with the same books.

19 years of this shit. mum, gran and 'the key began to glow'

the purvey neighbour too Confused

ProudAS · 19/11/2013 19:27

Kipper is Christopher too.
