To really miss those early Sunday evening children's BBC serials we used to watch.

Such as The Phoenix and the Carpet etc.

We'd all watch them together with toast round the fire.

Wonder why they don't do them now.

The Clifton house mystery is on DVD.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/11/2013 16:26

I'm 52 so the same adaptations as BackForGood, pretty much. This thread prompted me to look to see if the Anne of Green Gables (with Kim Braden) was available on DVD - annoyingly it seems not, though Anne of Avonlea is.

I never saw Little House on the Prairie or Follyfoot though.

BBC still does some things as weekly drama, though they are on radio4extra these days. Last xmas they commissioned a version of The Faraway Tree which had Johnny Vegas in it (think his production company produced it).

Guess cost is an issue, Atlantis, Doctor Who have more general appeal than something aimed directly at children. CBBC still seem to do reruns of Tracey Beaker, though have had some new things like Wizards and Aliens.

MurderOfGoths · 18/11/2013 17:39

I'm 29, so mostly aware of the 90's productions (or those that were rerun in the 90s)

The Dickens serial. I miss those.
They were amazing- I grew up watching Tale of Two Cities and Dombey and Son
Crumpets on the open fire, bathing in a basin in front of the fire...
And when Open All Hours finished it was time for bed

slickrick · 18/11/2013 17:50

I just mentioned this to someone the other day. Programmes such as the Little House on the prairie, The Waltons, champion the wonder horse, wonder woman, Heidi, Black Beauty and Worzal Gummage were all great innocent programmes that supported good morals and family values. Things have changed so much there are no nice programmes any more (except for Downton) its such a shame.

CokeAndCrisps · 18/11/2013 18:49

I remember Narnia. Best ever BBC production. We recorded it on tape and used to watch it over and over again. We are two brothers and two sisters and we all named ourselves after each character; I was Lucy Smile.

On the weekends we used to all sit around the TV and watch programmes like The A Team, Airwolf, The Incredible Hulk, Worzel Gummidge and Fu Manchu films.

Ever since this whole reality TV fad started there's nothing good to watch on TV anymore apart from Doctor Who.

wigglesrock · 18/11/2013 19:14

"supported good morals and family values" Ah yes why can't tv be like it used to be - no ethnic diversity, no mention of different types of families, nothing a child could actually relate to Hmm

If you watched Little House on the Prairie now, the casual racism would send you screaming into the arms of CBBC.

Wolfblood on CBBC has been very very good.

MrsMerrick the changes or whatever it was! remember that, it scared the life out of me too!

Owl service was spooky Sandiacre.
I wish they would make the other Alan Garner books into a series, The Weirdstone of Brisingamen and Moon of Gomrath. I am 50 and have read those book dozens of times.

Also the fantastic Jacobean books by Joan Aitken, Black Hearts in Battersea etc SHOULD def. be made into films. Beautifully written, they are not just for children but enjoyable any age

clarinetV2 · 18/11/2013 21:38

I think it was Saturday morning, but does anyone remember The Flashing Blade? Don't remember what it was about, but the theme music was great!

Gatekeeper · 18/11/2013 22:01

I remember that and Robinson Crusoe, Belle and Sebastian

here you go clarinetV2

Gatekeeper · 18/11/2013 22:04

I used to love the music from The Persuaders (Roger Moore and Tony Curtis)

Gatekeeper · 18/11/2013 22:07

anyone remember Moon Stallion?

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 18/11/2013 22:09

Oh gosh gatekeeper I remember all of those you must be as old as me!

ExitPursuedByABear · 18/11/2013 22:09
clarinetV2 · 18/11/2013 22:11

Oh, fantastic, thank you Gatekeeper. I'm going to be singing that for days now, it's just as good as I remember. As a theme tune it's right up there with Follyfoot and Black Beauty. Yep, BackforGood, I'm the same age as you! If I'm remembering rightly, the Black Beauty serial had very little in common with the novel and film - wasn't it about a doctor's children, and featuring a squire?

clarinetV2 · 18/11/2013 22:14

Moon Stallion! I'd quite forgotten that. Wayland's Smithy, and Diana the Moon goddess or something.

Midnight Is a Place, anyone?

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 18/11/2013 22:16

at the mention of Heidi and Secret Garden.

Box of delights, never heard of, going to investigate

CointreauVersial · 18/11/2013 22:20

Wow, this brings back amazing memories of the 1970s - we used to go to my grandparents for tea, with my cousins, every single Sunday.

Proper tea, with china cups, scones, cakes etc. then snuggling up on the sofa in front of the fire for TV. I remember Black Beauty, Secret Garden, The Diddicoi, Kidnapped, Ballet Shoes and loads others mentioned above. And The Muppets.

And having a huuuge crush on Benedict Taylor.Grin
