To really miss those early Sunday evening children's BBC serials we used to watch.

Such as The Phoenix and the Carpet etc.

We'd all watch them together with toast round the fire.

Wonder why they don't do them now.

yes, bring them back bbc. I have often thought about this myself. I remember watching the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe among others.

Wardrobe? Spare Oom? I should have paid more attention to history when I was a young fawn.

I loved the chronicles of Narnia, I remember looking forward to it and watching it with my sisters. It's such a shame there's nothing like that on the TV any more Angry

I do remember being absolutely fucking terrified of Tripods though. Terrified Blush.

Yes, remember watching this kind of thing over tea round at my nan's house. Not sure what is on in their place now - we are usually watching a DVD around that time, in bad weather at any rate.

Flambards. I was at boarding school then and pretty much the whole school would be crammed into the tv room to watch it every Sunday.

I loved these growing up and have often thought they should bring them back. The run up to Christmas for me as a child was the Chronicles of Narnia. I have the DVD and the special effects have not aged well though.

Five Children and It and Children of the New Forest were also good. I think the advent of specific children's channels and CBBC sort of killed it off.

Yes to whoever said about Susan Copper's Dark is Rising Sequence and totally agree about the totally shite film. The Little White Horse would be good as well. And the same comments apply about that film.

Flambards, with its haunting theme tune. Loved it. Hard now for children waiting a whole week to see something but intend to try it with the DDs!!

I remember some channel used to have a 1950s-looking musical twelve days of Christmas, all ice cream colours. I can't find anyone who remembers this (I suspect channel 4 in the afternoon).

I bought Box of Delights for dh last Christmas after a MN thread, wasn't as good as I remembered it.

YY to Phoenix and the Carpet and Lizzy Dripping!
Only I don't remember those being on Sundays but during the week.

But IMO nobody is making good children's film drama. It's all animations or blockbusters like Harry Potter.

If you're looking on amazon for actual film drama for children, the films by The Children's Film Foundatioon ( search on this) are interesting, especially Tales of London.

We watched some episodes of Lizzie Dripping at the BFI and it didn't live up to expectation - very slow moving!

I think The Little Princess was one as well. Yes I miss them too and wish there was something child friendly to watch on a Sunday.

I doubt its to do with TV moving on, more to do with horrid BBC bosses and budgets and viewing figures.

Maybe we should petition them to put something on?

Loved The Chronicles of Narnia. Used to love the little people who had Stephanie Cole in it with her evil brother. I always think of them when we have apple crumble.

Used to be on after points of view and Songs of Praise.

Box of Delights was the best thing ever - I bought the DVD earlier this year, and plan to watch it one episode at a time, on Sunday evenings! I think Children of the Stones was an after-school teatime drama, but I could be wrong. I agree about it being creepy. Yes to Little Lord Fauntleroy, and I seem to remember Noel Streatfeild's Thursday's Child being done. Didn't Catweazle occupy the Sunday teatime slot at one time, though maybe not the book-serial-coming-up-to-Christmas one? Oh, and Come Back Lucy, which had me obsessed with time travel for a while.

I loved The Box of Delights. I bought it on DVD. My boys enjoyed it!

Got the Black Beauty theme tune in my head now. Loved it and all the Dickens series.

A lot of these can be bought as BBC full cast CDs. I've ordered the Box of Delights and we'll listen to it on the school run in Dec.

Oh, I loved The Box of Delights and The Children of Green Knowe (I think it was just the repeat on a Sunday though, as I remember watching both of these mid-week). I also loved A Little Princess. I remember being about 12 when Narnia was on, so a little older but I remember enjoying it anyway. Good memories. Smile

Love all these memories people are sharing.Smile

What a great thread - a trip down memory lane! I remember loving Thursday's Child, Black Beauty and Flambards. Some memorable theme tunes too!

Ooh there was another one but I've forgotten the name of it... A French prince / baron (or something) lost his parents when they drowned at sea and went to live with his horrible English relatives, with a cousin who was a spoilt brat and was also some kind of baron. For their birthdays they were made a ship model and a coach and horses model and the French boy picked the ship, even though he was scared of them.

Anyone remember that...? Must have been late 80s / early 90s.
