To really miss those early Sunday evening children's BBC serials we used to watch.

Such as The Phoenix and the Carpet etc.

We'd all watch them together with toast round the fire.

Wonder why they don't do them now.

I LOVED the box of delights. It was magical. I advise you not to watch it again if the feel the same. I did a few years ago and it really didn't live up to my memories!!
I also loved that Sunday tea time - ironing, roast, all pink from the bath.

educatingarti · 17/11/2013 19:45

This is the music to The Box of Delights Hely-Hutchinson Carol Symphony

HettiePetal · 17/11/2013 19:51

Late 60s version, Murder, also with Jenny Agutter. And again in 2000 or so.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 17/11/2013 19:53

EduCated - a badly dubbed foreign series?
If we're thinking of the same one, it was called Silas, but I don't remember it being on on Sunday evenings, more weekday mornings in school holidays.

GoingGoingGoth · 17/11/2013 19:53

Box of Delights was brilliant, I'd forgotten Barriers, Benedict Taylor was lovely.

EduCated · 17/11/2013 19:58

Good shout, Tunip, but pretty sure it's not that. I seem to remember the tattoo/birthmark was three dots in a triangle.

Rhubarbgarden · 17/11/2013 20:06

God I loved Box of Delights and all those others. Feeling quite misty eyed now - those Sunday evenings were the epitome of cosiness, safety, happy family times. Oh to have a moment of that back.

ohmymimi · 17/11/2013 20:06

'The Silver Sword' - I have vague memories of a black and white version (late '50s), but the BBC did it again later.

Boaty · 17/11/2013 20:09

Thanks Chatel and miggy That has been bugging me, google was letting me down! Grin

Pleasenomorepeppa · 17/11/2013 20:16

The Children of Greene Knowe, a The Box Of Delights & Tim Hensons Storyteller make me feel all warm inside!
Does anyone remember Faerie Tale Theatre?? It was a US programme & each episode was a fairytale. One of them had Christopher Reed in it.

RubySparks · 17/11/2013 20:18

I loved Kizzy, the Little Princess, The Secret Garden and Anne of Green Gables

Chesntoots · 17/11/2013 20:21

Thanks Candycrushhater - I was trying to think of Moondial the other day. Nobody knew what I was talking about and I know I didn't make it up.

I loved Box of Delights too. I had it on video years ago. It makes me feel all Christmassy and like a kid again.

ShinyBauble · 17/11/2013 21:07

EduCated - I remember that too! Can't remember the name though. A really good resource for things like this is the doyouremember forum forums.doyouremember.co.uk/ They've never let me down!

SueDoku · 17/11/2013 21:23

They filmed 'The Box of Delights' in the town that I used to live in - I can remember taking my DC to see the road all covered in (artificial) snow - in July.. Smile

winklewoman · 17/11/2013 21:28

Yes to the Railway Children, but does anyone else remember The Story of the Treasure Seekers also by E M Nesbit? What about Little Lord Fauntleroy? Going back a bit here.

SpencerPercival · 17/11/2013 21:28

phoenix and the carpet

and htat benedict thingy " barriers" who remembers that?

TooManyButtons · 17/11/2013 21:35

Seal Morning...that was ace.

crumpet · 17/11/2013 21:37

Anyone remember Bratt Farrar? It was years after that I realised that it was a Josephine Tey story.

NotAsTired · 17/11/2013 21:46

Anyone remember the enchanted castle? Not sure if it was Sunday evening though. Also, Stig of the Dump. I remember The Phoenix and the Carpet.

I also remember the Ghosts of Motley Hall used to be on Sundays but I used to be bored rigid (I think I was too young for it really) but I still use to watch it week after week. Grin

Rhubarbgarden · 17/11/2013 21:49

Ooh Bratt Farrar, yes! Loved that.

SorrelForbes · 17/11/2013 21:51

I have a VHS copy of Ballet Shoes and it's lovely.

I remember most of these but especially the E Nesbit ones.

OhMerGerd · 17/11/2013 21:57

Benedict Taylor ... I was determined I was going to marry him .... That memory had made me chuckle!

How about 'Children of the Stones' set around avebury .. can't remember what night it was on but it scared me witless and for years I'd only have to think of the theme music to go all peculiar...
We went round school the next day saying ... 'Happy Day' ... In a very spooky voice .. Must have annoyed the hell out of the teachers :)

We found the series on YouTube last year and watched with DD. I don't think they'd have anything that creepy for children today.

SpencerPercival · 17/11/2013 21:57

he was swoony
