I'm being a grumpy old git I know. But how often do people ask a pretty simple question, and if they just typed a few words into Google it just comes up first hit. I won't quote threads, but recently I couldn't help thinking... why not just look this up yourself... A bit lazy? Or just me?

Because some people, myself included, like to turn their curiosity into a conversation and interact with others. Google doesn't chat back to you and some of us don't see many other adults.

Me2Me2 · 17/11/2013 15:45

You're tempting me to start a thread titled 'What is google?'

tweetytwat · 17/11/2013 15:46

So you could have googled this yourself surely OP? Grin

Maybe they just fancy a chat. Or want people's opinions rather than the opinions of Google's advertisers?

AngelsLieToKeepControl · 17/11/2013 15:46

I like it when people ask questions on here, it's usually something I have never thought about asking, you learn something new every day on MN.

BunnyLebowski · 17/11/2013 15:47

YANBU. It annoys the crap out of me too.

Especially when someone asks MN to identify a song they can't place but know at least one lyric from Confused

I just passive aggressively link them to Let me google that for you

AgentZigzag · 17/11/2013 15:48

Maybe they're not posting to purely find the information?

They could be looking for opinions rather than facts, or maybe they've not talked to any adults for days and are lonely, perhaps they just want to be seen instead of constantly feeling invisible?

Who knows?

But if they could just google it then there must be another reason people are posting it for.

It's not for anyone to say they can't or make them feel crap for doing it, if you feel they're wasting your time, don't post on their threads.

It depends on what they are asking really.
The ones that irritate me or those who ask for a phone number to a company, then wait for ages for a reply. Why not just ask google and receive the number instantly.

Other than that though, i agree with the questions that need opinions and result in chat.

Yanbu

wontletmesignin · 17/11/2013 15:58

Are those i meant - not or. Oops

Sparklingbrook · 17/11/2013 15:59

I ask on here because I want facts and opinions and a chat usually. Much friendlier than Google.

The link to 'Let me Google that for you' is old and Hmm.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 17/11/2013 16:02

If everyone just googled stuff there would be no MN.

Peekingduck · 17/11/2013 16:04

Yeah, all perfectly reasonable responses. Grin

I like it that this thread with the OP saying she's a grumpy old git is third down in the google list Plenty Grin

Tee2072 · 17/11/2013 16:04

What is this Google you speak of? Can I eat it? Wear it? Drink it?

If not, I'm not interested.

wontletmesignin · 17/11/2013 16:04

Ah my post was mostly talking about facebook posts. I didnt know its was about MN. [Hmm]

Sparklingbrook · 17/11/2013 16:05

YY No, and if everyone minded their own business too. Grin AIBU would be dead.

Peekingduck · 17/11/2013 16:06

I'm not really thinking of things that ask opinions. How do I explain? Like a request for specific information. Then someone else says "read this" and very reasonably posts a link to the first hit on Google, which of course gives exactly the information requested.
The chats on here are awesome, especially when dodging work!

OP posts:
BunnyLebowski · 17/11/2013 16:09

Asking for opinions is fine. And obviously exactly what MN is for.

Asking what that song is called that goes "What does the Fox say?" is a different matter and happens all the time.

AgentZigzag · 17/11/2013 16:10

Some of the threads that start out with the most mundane OPs can turn out to be the best ones.

Tee2072 · 17/11/2013 16:11

So, should we ask you Bunny before we post? To make sure it's a fact and not an opinion?

BunnyLebowski · 17/11/2013 16:13

Course not.

It just bemuses me that in this day and age people are so ineffectual at using the internet.

Why type a wordy post on here when 3 key words typed into Google will give you your desired information?
