To not believe grown women here are getting excited over Xmas adverts.

seriously, my life is pretty boring but the day I get all worked up and teery over a sodding sainsburys/tesco/john lewis advert is the day I stick my head in the oven.

maybe its just mumsnet...I mean the john lewis advert made it into discussion of the day, can't see the aldi/lidl adverts will get the same reaction here....

teemany, I'm excited about Christmas but not a john lewis/tesco/sainsburys advert about it, to me they are two very separate things

There has only ever been one decent advert in the whole history of commercial telly ... it involved an old woman and a husband who likes his tea (branded or otherwise) Grin

juneybean · 13/11/2013 20:34

Well I thought the Lidl Little German one was hilarious.

MaryPoppinsBag · 13/11/2013 20:34

The Sainsburys one is lovely, just watched it after being tipped off by a thread on Mumsnet.

Not going to shop there though there isn't one near enough.

They make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. What's up OP have you no feelings? Wink

Christmas Day is six weeks today! I bloody love Christmas. Watched Polar Express on Sunday. Off to put the Bublemeister on now Wink

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 13/11/2013 20:34

Is it cognitive dissonance? - you know they are trying to flog you shit but at the same time the bunny is so cute etc etc

ShatnersBassoon · 13/11/2013 20:35

We're inferior, lesser people. We're immature. We're uncultured. We're idiots.

Glad you chalked it up, op.

stickysausages · 13/11/2013 20:37

Each to their own. FWIW, the one that genuinely made me teary is the Tesco camcorder one, reminded me of growing up, and of people (like my mum) who are no longer alive... it sucks at this time of year, missing people... so yes. Teary moment. It's not all about selling stuff.

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 13/11/2013 20:37

That wasn't the tesco ad, was it?!

Tee2072 · 13/11/2013 20:38

What do we have your permission to get excited over?

CombineBananaFister · 13/11/2013 20:40

I won't watch any of them until 1st Dec - it's an unbroken rule. It doesn't make me want to buy more (or I imagine make any other grown women/man buy more).
BUT it has become something of an xmas tradition. For some, to get excited about, for others sentimental and for some in a 'i'm watching but you're not fooling me you fuckers' kinda way so it appeals to all.
I may not cry/shout/give a shit about the adverts BUT i LOVE that they have become another English quirky institution. Who's advert will do what this year - cue bitchiness and tears. Grin

have I hit a nerve tee2072

The Tesco one is my favourite too (and i'm not a big fan of Rod) - because of the old folks in it that disappear as time goes on and new generations appear. Reminds me of my grandparents.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 13/11/2013 20:42

TBH I've not seen any Christmas ads yet, what with them not being shown on BBC4 Wink.

But I bloody love Christmas, and am already excited about it. In fact I'm going to go and feed my cake right now.

Trills · 13/11/2013 20:43

I'm feeling charitable today and I'll say that it's nice to get excited about small things.

My life would be better if I could find more joy in easily-obtainable things.

Trills · 13/11/2013 20:44

And of course you are being unreasonable to not believe it.

Do you think that people are lying about their Christmas-advert-related excitement? No.

Do you think they are somehow mistaken, and they are not as excited as they think they are? No.

Then they are that excited, and it is indeed unreasonable to not believe that they are.

Fenton · 13/11/2013 20:44

You are a misery guts.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 13/11/2013 20:45

It's one thing to disagree with the reason for the adverts (I agree that they're manipulative) but to have a go about 'grown women crying'?

Didn't realise that when I grew up I wasn't supposed to feel emotional about anything. Thanks for reminding me.

Stiff upper lips now girls!

Raddy · 13/11/2013 20:47

That JL ad could have been about anything at all and I would have cried.

I am lachrymose.

I've had a cry at the One Show tonight.

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 13/11/2013 20:50

I didn't know lachrymose meant inclined to weep! What a wonderful word.

I am lachrymose too. Had to be led out of philomena and towelled down.

Tee2072 · 13/11/2013 20:50

No, you haven't hit a nerve. I actually think all the adverts are crap. Except the M&S one. I like that one.

None of them make me weep.

I do think it's not up to you, or anyone, however, to believe or not believe or approve or not approve what gets people excited.

Are you the thought police? Is Big Brother sitting on your shoulder somewhere?

Thisisaghostlyeuphemism · 13/11/2013 20:51

Er that's 'Philomena' the film.

Katnisscupcake · 13/11/2013 20:52

Well they're not working for me if the intention is to make me buy something! The jl one makes me cry and I've never bought anything in there in my life! Yabu...
