to defriend someone for actually using the word 'discusted'?

In all seriousness. For real. She actually wrote that on her status.

Surely, not unreasonable to defriend?

I dont understand how it can have previously escaped your notice that the facebook status updater in question was not of the required intellectual standard.

Good point. It's entirely normal to set potential friends an exam on application, to weed out the substandard ones before you get emotionally involved.

QueenArseClangers · 12/11/2013 09:00

I saw a photo of a 'friend' on fb of her wearing thick rimmed black glasses with the legend geek sheek .

Justletmestayinbed · 12/11/2013 09:02

My old boss would misspell things all the time and use bad grammar. She was always going on about how she was dyslexic, but she couldn't speak properly and never had a diagnosis of dyslexia. She couldn't write properly because she didn't speak properly!! She would actually say things like 'generally' instead of 'genuinely' etc etc. I didn't know that was a sign of dyslexia? (Correct me if I'm wrong)
A lot of her spelling issues were because she couldn't be bothered to understand the words she was using. Fair enough, when she got her letters mixed up, that may well have been her dyslexia.

Also people (generally American bloggers) write 'wah-la' instead of 'voila' Shock. Again because they don't know what they're saying - a French word!!

ZooTimeIsSheAndYouTime · 12/11/2013 09:07

Well I'm not so sure. Discusted may not be a word, but then again 'defriend' wasn't either until recently was it?Grin

Writerwannabe83 · 12/11/2013 09:08

monetbyhimself

"...are you being ironic ? Given the spelling mistakes in your first post ?"

The spelling mistakes?? Plural? How many did I make? lol
I hang my head in shame Grin

However, I still reserve the right to Grin at things like bawbuls - I'm hoping 'all my mistakes' weren't as stupid as that Grin

MrsHelsBels74 · 12/11/2013 10:19

I've just seen someone on a FB selling page selling 'builder bear' outfits. I'm hoping it's an autocorrect failure.

Raddy · 12/11/2013 10:27

YANBU

I hide the Facebookers (not dyslexic) who use 'of' when they mean 'have', 'his' when they mean 'he's' and don't know the difference between your/you're and there/their/they're.

Daddypigsgusset · 12/11/2013 10:28

Spelling and grammar mistakes make me a little mad but I wouldn't dream of pulling anybody up on it publicly. What I do love is cocky fuckers who do attempt to correct and get it wrong themselves.

Recent example from FB:

Friend A: Yay, Sweetie House Mafia tonight (obvious sausage finger auto correct)
Friend B: it's Sweedish you absolute dumb fuck, this is why I am a teacher and you work in a shop! Haha

Oh how I loved bringing that Bitch down!

Writerwannabe83 · 12/11/2013 10:36

Grin @ daddypig!!!!

I've had my corrections corrected before, lol - it is mortifying!!! haha.

Lazysuzanne · 12/11/2013 10:49

Ebear, my post was clearly tongue in cheek but even so I don't need to set an exam to know that someone is thick

Lazysuzanne · 12/11/2013 10:53

I suspect that face book users are types who, pre internet, would have been non readers, this is why their vocabulary seems limited?

EBearhug · 12/11/2013 12:29

Ebear, my post was clearly tongue in cheek

Oh, Lazysuzanne, so was mine. Except for the clearly bit. Blush

Lazysuzanne · 12/11/2013 12:36

Oh yeah I get it now Blush

Lovecat · 12/11/2013 15:04

Being serious for a minute, I think rather than write people off as thick, we perhaps should look at the education system that is allowing people to leave school with no idea of how to spell or use grammar.

I have to admit that in the 1970's we weren't taught grammar beyond nouns, adjectives and verbs (and a brief interlude with metaphor and simile), but I picked up what was right (or sounded right) from extensive reading of well-written books. I suppose people who don't like reading/weren't taught to enjoy reading for pleasure wouldn't find this out and would go by what they heard around them.

We were, however, picked up on our spelling mistakes - things change and this now may happen, but it certainly wasn't happening 25 years ago when I used to share a house with a primary school teacher, a very intelligent woman with a B.Ed, who insisted that she shouldn't correct any spelling mistakes her pupils meant because it would make them scared of language and stem their 'flow'. What it actually seems to have done is condemned people to be written off as 'thick' by others because they don't know how to spell, punctuate or use grammar :(

Lovecat · 12/11/2013 15:05

meant = made Blush

See, I'm obviously a divvy too! :o

GhostsInSnow · 12/11/2013 15:32

I've told this on here before, but I have seen online a "jester" of goodwill and once on eBay a copy of "the lion, the witch and the walldrobe".

Crocodilehunter · 12/11/2013 15:50

I hate when I see 'lazanyer' as in 'yum this lazanyer is nice' and DP is terrible for spelling, we get 'dose' instead of 'does' and he pronounces specific like pacific.
It's goes through me like nails down a black board!

Weeantwee · 12/11/2013 15:59

I have a number of friends who during the month of June (I forget what the actual date is) will always have the FB status:

'Happy farthers day to my dad' Hmm

Weeantwee · 12/11/2013 16:04

I agree lovecat Our education system does have a lot to answer for when teachers are too scared to correct a child's spelling.

My DH is not great at spelling but is very intelligent. He has never been interested in reading for enjoyment and I think that's the problem.

Gruntfuttock · 12/11/2013 16:26

"I agree lovecat Our education system does have a lot to answer for when teachers are too scared to correct a child's spelling."

It's even worse when your child has spelt a word correctly and her teacher has crossed it out and replaced it with an incorrect spelling! This happened when my daughter was at primary school and when I saw it in one of her books on a parents' day I was not amused, to put it mildly. What chance have children got when even primary school children know more than some of their teachers?

MollyBerry · 12/11/2013 18:24

What's a lazanyer? Lasagna?

Lazysuzanne · 12/11/2013 18:40

is it deliberate, the not caring about the spelling of words?

If I'm typing online and a word looks wrong I'll look it up, it's not as if I have to get up and find a dictionary, I can find the correct spelling instantly on google.
If I'm unsure about the exact meaning of a word I'll google it to make sure I'm using it correctly.

Do some people not care that incorrect spelling and inappropriate use of words makes them look uneducated?

LemonBreeland · 12/11/2013 19:01

One that seems to pop up a lot recently on my fb and by more than one person, is saying edition instead of addition. "Look at the new edition to our family" accompanying a picture of a cute puppy or something.

The best ones were both hospital related and by two different people.

First one, dh is in hospital with phenomena, she meant pneumonia! I was quite impressed she spelt phenomena correctly.

Second one, X is in hospital in icealation!

MrsHelsBels74 · 13/11/2013 11:05

I saw someone on my FB this morning 'not looking forward to scrapping the car every morning'...seems a bit excessive to me Grin

misspontypine · 13/11/2013 11:29

Looking up words that you are not sure about is a great idea. The problem for many dyslexic people is that they can't see that the word looks wrong. If I looked up all tge words I was unsure about I would spend hours of what should be leisure time checking the dictionary so that some of you don't think I'm uneducated.

For example scrapping the car doesn't look wrong to me.

I am sorry if my learning disability offends you, feel free to ridicule and "unfriend" me as obviously I am uneducated lazy and stupid.
