DSS has been round for lunch four times this week and making himself a sandwich.

WIBU to request that he uses only a half can of tuna for his sandwich??

Personally j would struggle to chow through a sandwich made with 140g of tuna.

It's over £1 per can.

How old is he? Half a can is perfectly sufficient for a female adult, but I wouldnt be shocked if a teenage boy would want and be able to eat the lot!

miggy · 09/11/2013 17:07

given my son uses 4 eggs to make a sandwich (and thats after dinner!) then can of Tuna seems reasonable for teenage boy!

TooOldForGlitter · 09/11/2013 17:09

My DSS is 17 and would easily eat a whole tin of tuna and then some on sandwiches.

JemimaMuddledUp · 09/11/2013 17:09

It depends on the person.

When I was losing weight I would eat a whole tin of tuna for lunch as it was filling protein for not too many calories.

How old is your DSS? I would imagine that an active teenage boy would easily want a whole tin, probably with about 4 slices of bread.

If you can't afford it you need to tell him to go easy on the amount he is using, and explain why. Provide cheaper sources of filling protein instead.

Heymacarena · 09/11/2013 17:13

He is 16.

Yes, I imagine he can eat it. But I did suggest cheese today, and said that we had plenty of it.

I'll have to say something, but it makes me out to be the evil stepmother.

He actually gets fsm but chooses to come to ours instead.

69p a can at Lidl

whereisthewitch · 09/11/2013 17:15

I'm a 30 yo woman and use a whole can. Don't be so stingy get uour DH to buy it if it's such a mega issue.

FrostedButts · 09/11/2013 17:16

49p at aldi!

noisytoys · 09/11/2013 17:16

Tell him to have his FSM. Him being eligible means you need to save the pennies. There's no need to not have free food and spend money you can't really afford

CoffeeTea103 · 09/11/2013 17:16

Op I wouldn't say anything. It's going to come across very bad.

azzbiscuit · 09/11/2013 17:17

69p a can tuna, perfect for those who have destroyed their taste buds with drugs.

Heymacarena · 09/11/2013 17:17

Is it ? Will have to get some in from there then.

I guess I havebeen brought up to be more frugal.

Sieveoooplay · 09/11/2013 17:18

My 12 year old has a whole can of tuna (mixed with mayo)

I think you are bing a bit stingy, unless money is really tight.

I wouldn't imagine that cheese is a much cheaper option if he eats a lot of it.

Heymacarena · 09/11/2013 17:18

Aldi then if its the cheapest.

Will get down there tomorrow.

OP posts:
Heymacarena · 09/11/2013 17:20

He doesn't live here, but our house is closest to

college.

I won't say anything, but May 'move ' the tuna and leave the cheap ham visible instead.

OP posts:
azzbiscuit · 09/11/2013 17:21

Tinned tuna also tastes like crap if its kept in the fridge for a day, so if you use half a can you need to do something with the other half soon.

NettoSuperstar · 09/11/2013 17:21

Jam or peanut butter is cheaper, or even value chocolate spread or cheap eggs.

blueemerald · 09/11/2013 17:22

You can get 3 or sometimes even 4 cans for £1 in most poundland/99p type shops. I would imagine cheese is much more expensive.

I would, however, encourage him to eat his schools meals...

DioneTheDiabolist · 09/11/2013 17:22

Why don't you just get your DP to get some in for him?Confused

ICameOnTheJitney · 09/11/2013 17:24

You sound really tight OP. It's a can of tuna ffs! He's 16! He could happily eat a WHOLE tuna I'm sure. Why shouldn't he have some food at your and his Father's house?

SweetCarolinePomPomPom · 09/11/2013 17:24

Assuming he mixes it with mayo, most definitely. I can get two generous sandwiches or three adequate ones out of a can of tuna mayo.

SweetCarolinePomPomPom · 09/11/2013 17:25

Although 16 year olds do eat a lot.

ICameOnTheJitney · 09/11/2013 17:25

You're hiding the tuna? Shock Unbelievable.

drinkyourmilk · 09/11/2013 17:26

I imagine that the OP and her dp share expenses. Can't really start telling her dss that he can 9th eat what his dad bought.

drinkyourmilk · 09/11/2013 17:26

Only. Not 9th.
