DSS has been round for lunch four times this week and making himself a sandwich.

WIBU to request that he uses only a half can of tuna for his sandwich??

Personally j would struggle to chow through a sandwich made with 140g of tuna.

It's over £1 per can.

TH my concern here would be why he prefers lunch with his step mum to lunch with his friends. Is his dad there at lunchtime?

I'm sure you're lively op but I'd also worry there was something up if ds preferred to eat with me rather than his friends.

I dont think a whole tin is extravagant but if it's causing you financial problems he needs to have his fsm

CustardLover · 09/11/2013 20:18

Why not make a sandwich for him and generously fill it with salad and veg as well as the protein of your choice - fill him up, make him feel loved and economise all at the same time.

greenfolder · 09/11/2013 20:52

I have teens. I genuinely keep any excess stuff in the car boot unless it is persishable. They can eat as much as is available!

Atari · 09/11/2013 20:57

Lively? Lovely!

Oh and yes, as others have said, no-one should be eating tuna every day

manticlimactic · 09/11/2013 21:17

I want a tuna sarnie now Sad

CreamyCooler · 09/11/2013 21:31

I just had a tuna ( the whole tin), mayo and crisp wrap!

foreverondiet · 09/11/2013 21:32

Sorry think you are being tight. Good protein source - I always eat a whole tin.

ImperialBlether · 09/11/2013 21:36

Why shouldn't the OP be concerned that he's not eating a meal in school, which is free, but is eating food at their house, which isn't?

OP, the thing about teenage boys is that often you have to hide food if you can't trust them to just eat everything in sight. A lot of people do this with biscuits and cake, maybe you should hide the tuna?

fatlazymummy · 09/11/2013 21:38

Why do people keep saying the OP is tight? Not everyone lives in a world where everyone can eat whatever they want. Perhaps the OP has to stick to a budget or meal plan.

Chewbecca · 09/11/2013 21:39

Personally I wouldn't but I know the amount my DSSs ate when they were teenagers was astounding, sandwiches being one of the most shocking portions. Both in their 20s now and slim so just a phase I think. It is annoying but quite normal and it will pass. You just need to be clear which items need to be left untouched, e.g. Planned for the evening meal.
I would also be a bit peeved at buying food when there is a FSM available and would just ask why (not in a stroppy way).

Mintyy · 09/11/2013 21:40

Cripes, I thought I was greedy, but a whole tin of tuna does 3 rounds of sandwiches in our house.

ElleBellyBeeblebrox · 09/11/2013 21:41

Definitely a whole tin for me. But I am greedy and love tuna.

What about making a tuna sandwich for him in advance, on the days when you know he's coming for lunch? (Using half a tin...)

I agree with another poster though, seems odd a 16 year old would rather hang out with step mum rather than his mates at lunch time!

pigletmania · 09/11/2013 22:56

I know op tell him to bring his own tuna Grin

ImperialBlether · 09/11/2013 23:08

Tuna sandwiches made in advance are horrible, though.

I don't think he's there to see his step mum, Laurel.

Atari · 10/11/2013 07:58

I don't think he's there to see his step mum either but i do think it's a bit odd that he'd rather go there, on his own, for a tuna sandwich than have chips or similar with his mates in the cafeteria. Just makes me wonder if he has something going on.

ToTheTeeth · 10/11/2013 08:54

You're arguing over 50p's worth of tuna because you can't shop around for cheaper tuna. Do you really want to be the wicked stepmother over 50p?

Also, I'm a slim, adult woman and use a whole tin of tuna for a sandwich.

chanie44 · 10/11/2013 08:54

Op, I don't think YABU.

I remember buying a pack of hotdogs for £2. My sister had one and then two of her children had 2 and that was half the pack. I had only

ToTheTeeth · 10/11/2013 08:58

I would do some gentle probing to find out why he's not eating his FSM. How does the school manage the system? I remember in my day it was very obvious who had FSM and if that's still the case it's unfortunately v possible that he's being bullied.

Also if he is on FSM is it possible his mum's told him money is tight because his dad swanned off to his new family? It's possible he thinks you're made of money and tuna.

TheHumancatapult · 10/11/2013 09:03

The canteen at high school is often a rugby scrum to get served and there is never enough seating either.you can spend most of lunch time (45mins) in a queue
Ds2 entitled fsm but comes home instead

chanie44 · 10/11/2013 09:04

(Sorry, 1 year old grabbed the phone)

.... I had only just bought the pack. I had a bit of a rant and told the children if they were hungry they could have sandwiches as that would fill them up.

The cost of food is expensive and if he is eating a tin a day, that's £20 a month. I wouldn't hide the tuna, I probably wouldn't buy it for a week or two and stock up on cheaper items like ham, cheese and salad.

I think you need to find the balance between running your home and ensuring DSS is welcome.

TheHumancatapult · 10/11/2013 09:06

Average high school 1000 and even if only half ate in canteen that's 500 in 45 mins let alone time to nip into toilets

Alwayscheerful · 10/11/2013 09:10

cheaper tuna is not as solid and seems mushy I don't think it will go as far.

Try mixing with sweet corn.

If he is on free school meals perhaps food is a bit scarce at home.

Just vary the food available, can you make up big dishes of cooked pasta with tuna or with chorizo & chilli & tomato.

diddl · 10/11/2013 09:14

I don't think that YABU either OP.

If he has half a tin-would the other half also get used?

I'd never dream of using a whole tin-there's always someone else willing to use the other half!
