to be concerned re. what is going on re. immigration and population growth?

So many non-English voices, especially East Europeans, but so many different nationalities en masse it seems have moved here in the last 10-20 years - completely unprecedented historically. And in an already very over-crowded island.

Today I read Labour MP Frank Field say that the population increase due to immigration by 2031, i.e. less than 20 years, will be approximately 10 million and will require building something like seven new Birminghams! Or another London! Based on latest predictions in the papers today anyway.

Did Blair and Mandelson envisage this when they signed up for European Community rules on immigration and refugees? Or did they cynically not care because it meant cheap labour, cheap votes, increased profits (via membership of the European Community).

Did the architects of this policy not consider how it would affect housing, jobs and education and the resulting massive investment needed there, and the over-crowded population we have already.

I believe we have never been consulted or told anything honestly about what the consequences of EC membership was immigration-wise, if indeed there was ever any plan (doesn't seem to be, just a kind of opportunistic carpetbaggers philosophy approach of selling England by the pound).

I feel deceived and hoodwinked really. But are there any more positive thoughts on this? I find it v. depressing.

OP could you just please explain what exactly your point is? What is it you're taking issue with, is it the fact they're coming here at all or something else?

LaurieFairyCake · 06/11/2013 22:19

Nope there's one more statement that will get a full house

"My kid ain't learning proper English at school cos he's the only white kid and they all talk forrin"

AthelstaneTheUnreadyFucker · 06/11/2013 22:20

I haven't RTFT, but I'm sure there was something on the radio this morning (Chris Evans, voice of the pop. blah de blah) that said people who emigrated to this country were net contributors to the system - this in the context of trying to calm down benefit hysteria about immigration being nothing but a drain on the finances...

Are my sources (bloke on radio) more or less valid than yours (wot I think)? It behoves the pair of us to try and find a few more facts, don't you think?

Misspixietrix · 06/11/2013 22:20

OP you do realise that David Cameron has NO intention of offering us a referendum don't you? That's why he's holding off on one until AFTER we all vote.

ClarityJane · 06/11/2013 22:21

Chipped, thanks for telling me to leave my own country!

But as it happens I wouldn't move abroad and assume I could take someone else's job and home and state benefits and education and expect them to necessarily welcome me with open arms Hmm.

I think I would understand if there was some resentment, tbh.

cantdoalgebra · 06/11/2013 22:22

In order to add some facts to this debate, the National Ecosystem Assessment (NEA) of the UK calculated that 6.8% of the UK can be classified as "urban". To put that in perspective, this figure is made up of 10.6% for England, 1.9% for Scotland, 3.6% for Northern Ireland and 4.1% for Wales. Obviously, England is by far the most urbanised.

tinmug · 06/11/2013 22:23

Mylovelyboy

Erm, I told you where I live. And what it was like.

Birmingham is one of the most multi-cultural cities in the UK. And yet the problems I experienced there growing up mainly came from the white thugs in the area.

How is that not living in the real world? Where do you think I live, fucking Narnia?

LEMisafucker · 06/11/2013 22:27

coming over here, and taking our jobs and fucking our women!! fuckers :)

Why is it YOUR country? This really winds me up, its just a bit of land that broke away from the rest of europe millions of years ago. Its not actually yours!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 06/11/2013 22:27

Why is a Brit living in Spain an expat and a Pole living in West London a immigrant.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 06/11/2013 22:27

Gordy - you can use prickwits all you like. Have you never heard that one before? I use it all the time, generally to describe people like the OP and her ilk.

I also like cock-womble, but I think that one's more widespread now.

JaquelineHyde · 06/11/2013 22:27

Oh I would love to live in Narnia!

Strumpetron · 06/11/2013 22:27

misspixie

Don't get me started! Wink

Misspixietrix · 06/11/2013 22:27

Just need someone to be accused of playing the Race Card now I believe...

MrsOakenshield · 06/11/2013 22:28

I'm not sure why I'm bothering, but here goes.

Let's take dentists as an example. Not enough British people are becoming dentists to supply the number of dentists that we as a nation need. Therefore we need foreigners to come to live and work here as dentists. We haven't paid for their schooling. In some cases they will have been to dental school in their own country, so we won't have paid for that either. If they study here they have to pay a lot, which suggest they will be from a well-off family anyway - again, the British state isn't paying.

But, we will benefit from their skill, we will benefit from the taxes they pay (and dentists can earn a lot).

Can you explain to me what is wrong with this scenario? If Brits don't want to do certain essential jobs, what do you suggest should happen?
