It's the only dressing up costume I have (apart from Lightning McQueen...) and we live in the Middle East so not easy to find a bug costume

I'd make a beetle headdress and use a decorated binliner as the carapace.
Do you have to have a bought one?

Bats are mammals, not minibeasts.

BrainSurgeon · 02/11/2013 14:07

MIL thinks it's a no-no.

I think he could just be the baddie!

UsedToBeNDP · 02/11/2013 14:07

Do some bats eat bugs, can you get away with it from that POV?

WorraLiberty · 02/11/2013 14:07

Bats aren't mini beasts are they?

Can't you make a costume?

BrainSurgeon · 02/11/2013 14:08

But but but do they have to be insects?

OP posts:
SilverApples · 02/11/2013 14:08

How old is he?

SilverApples · 02/11/2013 14:09

Minibeasts are insects and worms and woodlice and bugs.

scaevola · 02/11/2013 14:10

It wouldn't usually encompass bats, as some are huge.

But if you made it clear he was a microbat then it's near enough. Just as long as he doesn't try to eat any classmates who come as the insects that are many microbat's natural diet...

BrainSurgeon · 02/11/2013 14:11

He's five.

What exactly are Mini-beasts? Someone said slugs are in this category too.... Confused!Blush

phantomnamechanger · 02/11/2013 14:11

minibeasts is PC for creepy crawlies LOL - ie insects and such like so, no, not a bat.

black jumper and 4 pairs of black tight stuffed with newspaper or loo roll = spider

red/black clothing and a headband with antennae on = ladybird

dress in green plus green face paint = caterpillar

there are loads of fairly easy options, you do not need a full or bought costume

Hopasholic · 02/11/2013 14:13

What does 'inspiration&qo ut' mean?

Put him in green clothes, wrap him in cling film and send him as a caterpillar Grin

SilverApples · 02/11/2013 14:14

www.parkfieldict.co.uk/infant/minibeasts/groups.html

Bit of card and paper, sellotape and glue, facepaints and coloured clothing...
it doesn't have to be a big deal.

phantomnamechanger · 02/11/2013 14:14

minibeasts are worms, slugs, earwigs, ants, beetles, caterpillars, spiders, woodlice, flies etc
the sort of stuff you could find in your flowerbed/garden

so not all are technically insects, but definitely NO MAMMALS!!

BrainSurgeon · 02/11/2013 14:14

Inspiration day... Apparently it's about building confidence bad team spirit. So yeah, I suppose a bat would BA a bit odd in a team of bugs Grin

BrainSurgeon · 02/11/2013 14:15

Sorry! I meant confidence AND team spirit Blush

i really hate the term mini-beasts, aren't they just insects? what's so wrong is using that term?

thehorridestmumintheworld · 02/11/2013 14:16

Yes can you customise the bat outfit to be a beetle

SilverApples · 02/11/2013 14:17

No, worms are annelids and slugs and snails are molluscs and spiders are arachnids and... they are not all insects.

BrainSurgeon · 02/11/2013 14:17

Ah Silverapples that makes it crystal clear! Ta Thanks

I might send him as a worm.

BrainSurgeon · 02/11/2013 14:18

So just out of curiosity, what was wrong with the term creepy-crawlies.... I thought is was kind of cute!

OP posts:
phantomnamechanger · 02/11/2013 14:18

see examples in my previous post SEA, the reasons you can't just call them insects - insects have 6 legs, minibeasts may have 6, 8, none, or many!

WorraLiberty · 02/11/2013 14:19

Can't stop laughing here at building 'bad' team spirit Grin

BrainSurgeon · 02/11/2013 14:19

Thehorridest - interesting idea. Ta

OP posts:
SilverApples · 02/11/2013 14:20

It was seen as giving them a negative image, so they got rebranded.

BrainSurgeon · 02/11/2013 14:20

Yeah Worra that kind of typo could get me in serious trouble at school Grin
