Animals vs humans

AIBU to think if faced with choosing a pet over a human (even if a stranger), you should choose the human?

The idea was brought up in another thread and put in life or death situation. Building on fire contains your pet and a stranger. You could only save one, who would it be?

I had a dog, Ralph, I cried my heart out when he died 3 years ago. The only dog I wasn't scared of! But I can't imagine leaving a person to die instead, no matter how my heart would break.

This thread has kept me amused all day, now we've moved from throwing insults about people's mental health to people feeling sad and disgusted and shocked. What a load of bollocks!

Writerwannabe83 · 02/11/2013 18:22

but where has anybody said they'd save their pet over a child????

littlewhitebag · 02/11/2013 18:23

candy. I'm with you. I have found it stimulating and enlightening. My DD tells me they debate such things in school in social ed.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 02/11/2013 18:24

This thread has made me reconsider my position of always saving the human because some of the humans on this thread are acting in a really cunty way. My dog has never acted so pathetically and he's a fucking animals!

Writerwannabe83 · 02/11/2013 18:24

I thnk it's hilarious how invested some people seem to be getting - it's the best MN entertainment I've seen in a while Smile

I can't stop imagining all these hypothetical burning buildings with humans and dogs banging on the windows, begging to be rescued, whilst long-lost cousins are wishing they'd made more of an effort to stay in touch Grin

ImagineJL · 02/11/2013 18:24

Sorry but yes, I think this disregard for human life is scary. As is domestic violence and child abuse. All nasty and scary. But I'm a doctor, and I've sworn to protect human life, and seen way way too much of the consequences of human life not being saved.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 02/11/2013 18:25

*animal, he's only one animal

candycoatedwaterdrops · 02/11/2013 18:26

"Whilst long-lost cousins are wishing they'd made more of an effort to stay in touch grin"^

Grin This made me laugh our loud!

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 18:27

Once again I reiterate - It is not real!!!!

Yes, but it's more terrifying than real life abuse that is posted about on MN daily... Hmm

Will someone please think of the hypothetical burning strangers?!?!

CatOfTheDay · 02/11/2013 18:27

Some peopled are being SPECIESIST!!!!
It's discrimination against species which are not their own! I'm shocked and saddened! Wink

littlewhitebag · 02/11/2013 18:29

Personally I am a bit worried about the plumber. What happened to him? Maybe he will forget to connect a pipe causing a flood and putting out the bloody fire.

UrgentNews · 02/11/2013 18:30

pianodoodle but I don't have a 'pet family', I just have a family, of which my dog is a part.

CatOfTheDay I agree 100%

I'd like to pose a question to those who say that pets aren't family. If a random dog and I were both swept away into the sea and my dog could only save one of us, she would almost certainly choose me, as we have a bond. She wouldn't care about species, she would save the creature that she had the strongest bond with. And to me that is a deed more 'human' than killing someone's beloved pet family member out of spite.

Writerwannabe83 · 02/11/2013 18:30

hahahaha @ speciesist!!!!

I'm laughing too hard now - it's just soo funny Grin Grin

Are people really taking this thread seriously???? Grin

Candycoated - I'm going to go and send my cousins a FB message, haha. I don't want to burn my bridges...... Smile

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 18:30

Don't worry about him littlewhitebag someone offered to fuck him up thread Wink

candycoatedwaterdrops · 02/11/2013 18:31

Never mind the plumber, did any of you bastards save my goldfish?!

SharpLily · 02/11/2013 18:32

"It's also worrying Curlew. Outside the burning building, your child is dying in there, and finally someone appears who can go in and save them. They rush in, and come out clutching a dog, saying "I've left your child to burn, you don't mind do you? It's just that I really love my dog.""

If you're so worried about your burning child, why the fuck are you standing outside waiting for someone else to go in and save him/her? At least I've got the bollocks to run in and save my dog! Ergo, I am a better human being Wink.

littlewhitebag · 02/11/2013 18:32

Erm .... I think the goldfish is maybe just a little ....cooked. Sorry.

2tiredtoScare · 02/11/2013 18:33

Someone offered to fuck a dog?!?

UrgentNews · 02/11/2013 18:34

ImagineJL I think that you're earlier comment that 'dog savers' have never lost a family member is absolutely vile. I'm speaking here as a man who has lost his wife and brother in a car crash. You should mind your words.

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 18:34

Grin Grin no, 2tired someone offered to fuck the plumber

candycoatedwaterdrops · 02/11/2013 18:34

I'm just about to send this email:

Dear cousins of candycoatedwaterdrops,

Just checking in to tell you that I'd be VERY upset if you saved your dog over me (your cousin - the HUMAN) in a burning building. Remember that I'm disabled too, so if you saved me, you could be extra smug about it.

Much love,
candy

P.S. Look forward to seeing you all at grandma's on Christmas eve.
P.P.S. Please no candles as crimbo pressies this year!

Well I'm very proud of my boy today... more so than normal. Out walking two kids were busy kicking the crap out of another kid. My boy gave a very authoritative bark & damn near dragged me over to them. I was heading that way as soon as he alerted me with his bark, just not going quite quick enough for him. The two lads heard & saw my boy heading towards them & ran off. I managed to reign in my dog dully aware that the beaten kid may not be appreciative of a dog looming over him & licking him. The kid was distraught sobbing almost uncontrollably & clearly in a lot of pain. They'd been stomping on his ribs & back & trying to kick his head through his arms that he'd wrapped around his head. My dog started whining clearly distressed at the distressed child. The boy seemed to hear that more than me quietly talking to him. He asked me why my dog was crying. I told him it was because he was. He asked if he was the dog that barked scaring his attackers off. I said yes. He started to quieten down a bit more & Asked if he could stroke my dog. I said of course but he'd probably lick him lots right in the face. He just shrugged & said he wouldn't mind that. Cue lots of frantic licking! The kid ended up alternating between laughing & crying (he was clearly in pain from the kicking so I made sure my dog kept all four paws on the ground). Eventually he calmed enough to call his parents who came & picked him up. Seems the kids who'd been giving the boy a good kicking are a couple of nasty bullies who are busy making this kids life hell.

I cannot say firmly enough, I will choose my dog! And yes, I did take the time to ask these people their thoughts re this..... they said they'd choose my dog! The kid has asked if he can play with my dog sometimes. I've told him & his parents my walk times & he's more than welcome to as long as one of his parents are present. We were talking for about 10 mins allowing the lad to regain his composure, the parents to vent before they took him to A & E to get his ribs xrayed. I think I was a little in shock myself.... I've heard of how nasty kids can be.never witnessed anything like this before. My boy is being so attentive to me right now. Damn right I'd tell the fireman to save my dog first!

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 18:36

Grin Grin candy

2tiredtoScare · 02/11/2013 18:37

Thank God for that! I was horrified and too lazy to RTFT in equal measure Grin
