Animals vs humans

AIBU to think if faced with choosing a pet over a human (even if a stranger), you should choose the human?

The idea was brought up in another thread and put in life or death situation. Building on fire contains your pet and a stranger. You could only save one, who would it be?

I had a dog, Ralph, I cried my heart out when he died 3 years ago. The only dog I wasn't scared of! But I can't imagine leaving a person to die instead, no matter how my heart would break.

I'm talking about people family in this situation. Pet family aren't the same. They may be day-to-day but in the instance where I had to choose my dog's life or a stranger's I'd have to leave my dog.

I don't believe it isn't OK for me to draw whatever conclusions I wish to about a person who says they'd do otherwise. They might not agree but I'd hardly expect them to :)

Writerwannabe83 · 02/11/2013 17:49

One of my cats has just jumped on to my lap and is doing really lovely kitty stuff - she's just brilliant Grin I love both my cats very much, I couldn't bear to think of either of them coming to any harm.

My husband doesn't love them as strongly as I do....I'm pretty sure he'd rescue the stranger. Then we'd have to get divorced because I'd never forgive him Grin

ADishBestEatenCold · 02/11/2013 17:49

Ah. I'm glad it's hypothetical then FruitSalad, because if it were real, and if you'd been the (nearly drowned) childs mum, and if you'd failed to rescue my hero of a dog who'd saved your child's life, and if I'd been curlew, then I would have had to kill your ............. no .......... I'm obviously nothing like curlew cos I can't even bring myself to say that.

Ah. Hypothetical. Grin

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 17:51

Writer you must LTB Wink

I asked DH earlier and without hesitation he said he would save our dog. I think I love him a little bit more! Grin

Greydog · 02/11/2013 17:52

OK - I'm going to say it - I don't know this stranger, I don't care about this stranger, and if he/she's in my house then he/she is probably the pyromaniac who set the fire and deserves all they get

Writerwannabe83 · 02/11/2013 17:53

Well said *Greydog" Smile

Writerwannabe83 · 02/11/2013 17:54

princessflirty - when my husband gets home tonight I'm going to ask him what he actually would do. He may surprise me and say he'd rescue the cats, you never know!! There may be hope for our marriage yet Grin

SecretWitch · 02/11/2013 18:00

My husband would would say he would get me and the children out and that's it. He barely tokerate our cats and hates people..but he is a cop..so that pretty much explains it.

SecretWitch · 02/11/2013 18:00

GAH, tolerates our kitties even..

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 02/11/2013 18:06

Kill my what? Genuinely curious.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 02/11/2013 18:06

"I would always save humans over animals because I am not sick and I don't need professional help. I am a decent person who is always right. You animal savers are selfish and would stamp on my burning child to rescue your fish tank."

...........is basically my summary of the thread.

I'm disabled, so I couldn't save anyone, probably not even myself. I might die worrying about this moral issue though.

Writerwannabe83 · 02/11/2013 18:07

Husband just came home and said he would always save the human!!!

I even posed the question: "Even if the stranger in the home was the man who had started the fire in the first place with the intention to kill us?!"

He said he would still save the human Shock

He said it's the right thing to do because a human's life is worth more than an animals. What does he know?! Grin

I asked what he would do though if I was crying my eyes out, begging and pleading with him to rescue our cats.....he said in that case he'd go back in after saving the human.

So he has slightly redeemed himself I guess..... Hmm

I'd go and visit the arsonist in prison every week and make him look at photos of my poor cats who died Sad evil bastard stranger Grin

CatOfTheDay · 02/11/2013 18:07

Late to the thread here so I'll probably kill it!

If it were one of our cats and a random human, I'd save the cat - no question.

Who are we to say human life holds more value than the life of any other animal? NO other animal has caused as much damage to our planet.

Although imagine if groups of dogs were sitting round having the same debate - and some dogs were convinced other dogs were more important than the random cat/human or whatever the other choice was in the doggy debate. It's no different here - the dogs just think canine life if more important because THEY are dogs so must be superior! Grin

ImagineJL · 02/11/2013 18:13

Of all the threads on MN, this is the most terrifying I have ever read. I can only assume that the people who would save an animal over a human have never had the devastating experience of losing a close family member.

Words fail me.

curlew · 02/11/2013 18:15

"Some of the human savers are just managing to reinforce my reply about saving the animals. Particularly curlew. Isn't it funny how those who purport to like people more than animals are the ones being offensive and insulting?"

Well, I think it's offensive and insulting to suggest that animals are more important than humans.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 02/11/2013 18:17

Imagine What are you on? Most people have lost a close family member. What has that got to do with anything or are we going down the route of competitive misery? Unless you lost your loved one in a burning building because someone rescued their pet instead?!

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 18:17

ImagineJL I've lost a few close family members...

CatOfTheDay · 02/11/2013 18:18

But WHY do the human-savers think humans are more important than other animals? Can anyone explain?

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 02/11/2013 18:18

I'm actually find this thread upsetting, I wish I hadn't opened it. I'm genuinely shocked anyone would leave a person to die while they saved their pet.

Can't say many things disgust me, but that does.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 02/11/2013 18:18

"Of all the threads on MN, this is the most terrifying I have ever read."

Just today alone, I have read a thread about a child undergoing cancer treatment and a lady who has gone missing, yet you think this is terrifying. Get a bloody grip!!!!!

littlewhitebag · 02/11/2013 18:20

Imaginejl. I would choose my dog. My Eldest DD was murdered. What does that say about me then?

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 18:20

Not read any domestic violence or child abuse threads then, Imagine ?

ImagineJL · 02/11/2013 18:21

It's also worrying Curlew. Outside the burning building, your child is dying in there, and finally someone appears who can go in and save them. They rush in, and come out clutching a dog, saying "I've left your child to burn, you don't mind do you? It's just that I really love my dog."

littlewhitebag · 02/11/2013 18:21

Once again I reiterate - It is not real!!!!
