to use my wedding dress for Halloween fancy dress?

I should state at the start that it is the dress I wore when I married my ex husband so no issues there for me. Also, the bodice is lovely and unmarked but the skirt is knackered, absolutely filthy (chucked it down on our wedding day) and has a fag burn in it (thank you pissed up ex BIL).

So, I was planning on shortening it to mid calf length, muckying up the skirt a bit more and with make up, a fake slit throat and dead flowers etc, go as a corpse bride. My mother is horrified! She said that I should save it incase the girls want to wear it but the skirt is beyond saving, so I would look after the bodice as that could be detached and used with a seperate or new skirt, but I see no issue in trashing the bottom of it.

No! Mine went in the dustbin when X left. Your idea is a much better use of a garment which has no sentimental value.

I find this distasteful a friend of mine went out in fancy dress with her wedding dress on not long after her divorce, she put the pictures on face book and it seemed general consensus was the same feeling as mine. Also just because the dress is meaningless to you doesn't mean her dcs will feel the same in years to come.

Yanbu. Great idea. Mine lived in the dds' dressing up box for years and then I turned it into a Miss Havisham costume.

I'd have done it even had I still been with him too - it's just a dress: what's the point of keeping a dress and never using it? waste of money.

Brilliant idea No separation from DH here, but mine still has our wedding day strawberries crushed into the bottom of the skirt as I never got it dry cleaned

YANBU. I just don't get why people hang on to their wedding dresses (especially the £3,000 ones!) they're not going to be in fashion by the time their DC's wear them, and they probably won't be old enough to be 'vintage' either.

Sorry, I just don't get it. I've sold my wedding dress, my mums and MIL's both went in the dressing up box. My friends has been taken apart and the fabric used for a christening outfit, which I thought was the traditional thing to do anyways.

Good idea I doubt most daughters would want to wear their mums wedding dress and accompanying stains, holes etc anyway.
It's only a piece of fabric albeit an expensive one.

I don't think it's nice for DC - they are a product of your union and it just seems a bit crass to wreak the dress in front of them. I know you keep it in a bag, but at least that's not destroying it as they watch.

Great idea, my old wedding dress went to neices and apparently did quite a few halloweens in it's time

To the naysayers. I would not be destroying it, it is currently unusable as a wedding dress, it really is that knackered. Even if it could be cleaned the massive hole and surrounding stains from the fag burn (right at the front, I was thrilled to walk around with that all day) render it rubbish.

However, the bodice which is cotton lace and could be used either seperately or attached to a new skirt, is salvagable and I will be looking after that in case the DD's want it.

Re the burn, I only noticed when I smelled something burning, it went through the dress, the underskirts and singed the hooped petticoat, its a wonder I didnt go up in flames. He ruined it :(

My mum saved stuff from her divorce so I could keep it. I chucked it all out because why the hell would I want it? You don't need 'proof of your union' because the kids are it!!

Your dress dress sounds fab. Go for it!

Saving your wedding dress for your children sounds really weird to me.
If it's not in good enough nick to be sold /donated to charity then you might as well have some fun with it.

I did a Corpse Bride three years ago.
I didn't want to alter or damage mine so I got some lace offcuts to tear and made an overskirt, then a long piece to make a veil (they were yellowy so looked old)
A tiara (it's a ti-ar-a) from Primark
Talcum in my hair (I'm not quite grey yet, need help)
Then white face, ghoulish eyes and red lips.

And a bouquet of black roses.

I looked lush

I've considered this and I'm still married. It's just a dress. Can't believe people can find an issue with this. It's your frock, do what you like with it.

I don't want DD to have my dress if she gets married neither does DH.

What we want to do is give her a generous budget for her the pick her own dress.

My dress is in the attic and that is where it's staying.

Great idea for a fancy dress . It's your dress, yours to do what you want with. Anyway, it's not like you are ever going to wear it again. And if your DDs ever decide to get married, they will probably want to get dresses of their own, not wear yours that will probably be years out of date by then.

My Mum let my DSis wear her wedding dress for a Halloween costume, years ago when DSis was about 10 (she was the Bride of Frankenstein. DSis for Halloween, I mean, not my Mum...) The dress was utterly destroyed, but my Mum's take on it was, feck it, it was only sitting in her wardrobe never to be worn again, DSis had a brilliant time flouncing about in it, and my Mum had loads of cute photos of her dressed up in it. None of us were at all upset that the Mammy's wedding dress was in tatters and ended up in the bin.

70is, at 'it's a ti-ar-a'. My fave TBBT episode ever!
