To wonder where this 'storm' is

5am we had a pathetic attempt at a thunderstorm, it's been a gorgeous day today only just started raining. I have torches, curtains and windows open ready to enjoy 'St Jude's' but nothing...why do we bother having a weather forecast!

Disclaimer: While I enjoy a few gusts and thunder and lightening I in no way want a huge storm that will affect others in any negative way*

Nothing much to report her in NW London, trees barely even swaying..

Although strangely there seems to be train cancellations all over place due to obstructions on the line within half an hour of us, so seems like the storm went around us.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 28/10/2013 08:38

Sweet FA happened in Hertfordshire. It's sunny now!

ThePortlyPinUp · 28/10/2013 08:38

Nothing much here in West Norfolk, it's raining and breezy but that's it.

cjel · 28/10/2013 08:39

We have heavy rain, gusty winds and its very dark but not too bad.

fanjofarrow · 28/10/2013 08:41

candy I live in Hertfordshire too, and the power is out two miles away from where I live. My neighbour's fence blew down this morning, and I have watched several wheelie bins racing each other down the road. The sun is out where I am, but it is still gusting like mad.

Allegrogirl · 28/10/2013 08:49

We're on the SW coast of Devon and completely underwhelmed by the storm last night. A few bins down and that's it. Not that I am complaining.

eddiemairswife · 28/10/2013 09:16

Woke and heard rain in the night. I sleep with the window open, so lay waiting for the wind thinking I would have to shut the window. Drifted off and woke at 8. Nothing has happened; no fences down, no bins blown over, trees still standing. What an anti-climax. West midlands.

Weener · 28/10/2013 09:21

TFL are certainly not running a normal service- there is major disruption! Am in SW london and it was very windy between about 5-7am, bright and sunny now though!

GobbySadcase · 28/10/2013 09:35

Well it wasn't 'nothing' in West Sussex!

Xiaoxiong · 28/10/2013 09:39

Well maybe I spoke too soon, no mobile signal this morning and our phone and broadband lines appear to be suffering some outages so maybe a branch has fallen in a sensitive location! We just had an email from the school groundskeeper saying there are a huge number of trees down, not to go out in wooded areas as there are many large broken branches still hanging from trees, two local roads blocked by trees - they are working as fast as they can to get everything cleared. Local golf course also closed because of multiple fallen trees.

So although it's sunny now and all appears pretty calm, it seems there was a lot of damage overnight here after all.

youarewinning · 28/10/2013 11:04

count yourselves lucky. Others and other areas have not been so fortunate - 25000 homes without power too.

Its still windy here F6-8, but sunny with clear skies.

bundaberg · 28/10/2013 11:09

depends where in west sussex!

we're up nr surrey border and it wasn't too bad. we lost a fence panel but other than that all fine. no reports of any bad damage thankfully.

friends down near bognor reported nothing much.

i guess it was not quite as widespread as they thought it might be, maybe a narrower path it took?
hopefully those in worst hit areas are all safe and power is soon restored!

Tanith · 28/10/2013 11:55

I imagine the fact that people were well warned and had plenty of time to prepare may have contributed to the damage limitation.

We had the same thing with the Millennium bug: no serious problems, so people assumed it was a big fuss about nothing. They conveniently forgot about the months of work and preparation that went into ensuring nothing much happened.

sheldor · 28/10/2013 12:13

We are lucky. We must be quite sheltered where we are as theres loads of news abouth South West being badly affected.Lets hope that the 14 year old is found.People shouldn't go near the sea/walls etc in these conditions it's unpredictable unfortunely

MrsOakenshield · 28/10/2013 13:02

2 people have been killed by falling trees. Just because it's not happening to you doesn't mean it isn't happening.

dreamingofsun · 28/10/2013 13:07

loads of big branches off one of our oaks.......large ones still hanging, so dangerous to go underneath. waiting for the tree surgeon to turn up, having phoned him at 8am this morning. will probably cost us around £400 i think.

South coast was really bad about 5am this morning. i could hear branches coming down in the wood next to us as well. thank goodness we had trees seen to earlier in the year, or it would have been much worse

Mitchy1nge · 28/10/2013 13:10

definitely Some Weather happening in Suffolk, there are all trees flying about and the railway lines are blocked and damaged and 20 minute journeys are taking people about four hours

oh and a double decker bus fell over! see?

Mitchy1nge · 28/10/2013 13:12

plus I am pretty sure my garden isn't that big usually

either God is pleased with me and has made it a lot wider or there used to be a fence which has gone somewhere Confused

TooTabooToBOOOOO · 28/10/2013 13:28

Cheshire, was very windy yesterday and has been hammering down pretty much all day so far.

Is odd though, pees down then stops for 5 mins and sun shines, then pees down, then stops, rinse and repeat.

We weren't expecting any of the gales though , thankfully

OhAntiChristFENTON · 28/10/2013 13:33

You might be near me dreamingofsun, 5am was exactly when it was at its worst for me too.

I sat there holding my breath until it died down a bit (well, not literally) - I really wanted to make a cup of tea but I was too afraid to move!

EldritchCleavage · 28/10/2013 13:41

Colleagues in NE Essex emailed to say they have blocked roads due to fallen trees, no rail service and no power. Sounds quite bad there.

Mitchy1nge · 28/10/2013 13:43

yeah most of my neighbours have no electricity

God must REALLY love me :)

livinginwonderland · 28/10/2013 13:46

Suffolk's been pretty bad.

Pretty much all Greater Anglia/Stansted Express trains are cancelled for the forseeable future, and one of my colleagues had to leave work at 9am after a tree fell on his house and smashed his extension and both cars in his driveway.

But, I walked home from work at midday and it really wasn't that bad, but I imagine in open spaces/in the country it's probably much worse.

Pixel · 28/10/2013 14:07

Sussex police were reporting 125 trees down by 6.30am (and those were the ones they knew about, blocking roads or whatever) so hardly 'nothing' as any one of those could have killed someone.

I don't think it's as bad as 87 (haven't seen any houses with walls or roofs missing round here anyway) but it was a nasty storm and it's still very gusty here. I've lost half my fence and the way it's going the rest will probably follow as it's rocking to and fro alarmingly.

I for one am glad we had some warning this time, even if some people are saying 'meh'.
