AIBU to panic that we have lost our iPad? Desperate for some point of views

So...DH and DS were pout and about this morning and had the iPad with them. DH put it on a wall/or a hedge in the car park as he was settling DS in and forgot the iPad there. As expected it was not there when he went back searching for it.

This iPad had loads of our pictures and videos but more worryingly it had pictures of our passports, screen shots of bank statements, email configures and other personal information.

He has been to the police and has filed an FIR. I'm really worried that someone would mis-use our personal data. Please tell me what to do.

Do you have find my ipad?

friday16 · 21/10/2013 14:12

Was it configured with a PIN or passcode? And was that, in turn, configured with the "wipe after ten wrong attempts" option?

As HavantGuard says, is "find my iPad" an option?

Otherwise, change passwords on everything right now.

babacoon · 21/10/2013 14:13

Hi Havant,

no we don't I'm afraid:'( I'm not usually upset over things being lost. But I'm so upset about this. I don't even want to talk to DH and Ds atm. Thankfully I'm at work.

why the actual fook would you have pictures of your passports or bank statements on there?!

WHY?!?!

Shock
NotYoMomma · 21/10/2013 14:15

it's hardly DS's fault! Shock

babacoon · 21/10/2013 14:17

Thanks Friday. Just checked with DH we haven't got the passcode on.DS(4) uses it a lot so we thought that would not be practical. I have changed the email passwords. Though I'm not sure whether the emails already in the inbox etc would be visible.

Find my iPad/iPhone is a standard app which is automatically downloaded onto apple devices (I think). Do you have another apple device where you can check? You just need to put in your email address and apple password to search for it.

HavantGuard · 21/10/2013 14:19

The only think I can think is to contact the bank. If you need cash, get some out then contact them. Explain that you've lost e bank statements (if you put your pin in writing do not admit that) and ask them what to do.

babacoon · 21/10/2013 14:20

YoMomma We haven't got a camera and recently needed to email the passports id cards to someone so took the pix from iPad to email them. and DS is sooooooooooooooooooooo hyper it is impossible to concentrate on anything else when he is around. He's an absolutely lovely boy in all other aspects. It's no one's fault really. My DH is one of the most careful people I have ever met !

Why on earth would you keep photos of passports and bank statements on an iPad in the first place? And if you have to have them on there for whatever reason, why would you not password protect it to the max?

Anyway, it's done now. YANBU to be panicking but your DH just made a mistake. It's not like he sold the iPad or gave it away to a friend. He put it down and forgot about it - not ideal, but could happen to anyone.

Have you tried the local police station? It's possible a good samaritan handed it in.

Screamqueen · 21/10/2013 14:22

Pictures of passports???

friday16 · 21/10/2013 14:22

Though I'm not sure whether the emails already in the inbox etc would be visible.

Yes, they will be.

HavantGuard · 21/10/2013 14:23

Try this support.apple.com/kb/PH2698

PacificDogwood · 21/10/2013 14:25

Yy, contact Apple support immediately.
I think they can wipe things for you remotely. I think Hmm [not an expert]

babacoon · 21/10/2013 14:26

Thanks Hercy. I have an iPhone and have the find iPhone app. I have emailed the link to DH and asked him to look into it.

Mckayz · 21/10/2013 14:27

I hope some nice person has found it. But I agree with contacting Apple.

Scream, DH needs to email pictures of his passport to people for work to get his visas. We used to use my iPad before we bought a printer/scanner all in one thing.

Always delete them as soon as the email has been sent.

Fakebook · 21/10/2013 14:30

Well, sorry but you have everything available to you on these devices to keep it safe and secure. It's your fault you haven't activated them. As for the lock code; dd was logging into my dh's phone when she was 3. 4 numbers isn't hard to remember at aged 4. I wouldn't sacrifice security of an expensive piece of equipment just because my child tantrums a lot.

Find Iphone; standard app, and I'd be lost without it the amount of times the children lost the phone/iPad in the garden this summer. I use it almost once a week to find our devices.

Quite silly to have bank screen shots and passport photos on there too! Just amazing.

babacoon · 21/10/2013 14:31

Thank you Havant and Pacific. Just got off the phone with DH he is looking at the links you have sent.

Living: Yes he has filed a FIR with the police.

PacificDogwood · 21/10/2013 14:32

And your post is helping the OP how, Fakebook?

NotYoMomma · 21/10/2013 14:33

even if you scan or take pics of important documents to email etc then you delete them! or at least use security on the device. having to 'unlock' it for when ds wants to use it is hardly difficult. I can't believe in this day and age with identity theft and the internet people can be so lax!

NotYoMomma · 21/10/2013 14:35

for future use should they get a new one?

its all standard stuff. how can they expect to teach their ds about internet safety and security when they haven't bothered?

valiumredhead · 21/10/2013 14:50

I'm with fakebook on this and why is it ds's fault?Confused

And WHY would you have screen shoots of passports and bank statements?Confused

Mckayz · 21/10/2013 14:54

Valium, as I said DH needs to send pictures of his passport to get visas for work. No idea about bank statements though.

MrTumblesKnickers · 21/10/2013 14:56

It's not that unusual to have screenshots of passports - we do and we use them all the time as we're expats and they're useful for visa stuff and loads of other bureaucratic hoops.

I second trying to get everything wiped remotely, surely that must be possible?

babacoon · 21/10/2013 14:58

thank you everyone for your replies. Most of you have been very helpful. We never take the iPad with us and live in a very secure area so robberies etc is out of question. But we have learnt a lesson from this.

And valium I never said it's my DS's fault. It's no one's fault really. Just a mistake that anyone could have made.
