AIBU to panic that we have lost our iPad? Desperate for some point of views

So...DH and DS were pout and about this morning and had the iPad with them. DH put it on a wall/or a hedge in the car park as he was settling DS in and forgot the iPad there. As expected it was not there when he went back searching for it.

This iPad had loads of our pictures and videos but more worryingly it had pictures of our passports, screen shots of bank statements, email configures and other personal information.

He has been to the police and has filed an FIR. I'm really worried that someone would mis-use our personal data. Please tell me what to do.

thanks Mrtumbles. we are expats as well and need soft copies of our IDs, visas etc to be on hand.

I'm trying to get the information wiped off remotely.

thanks pacific I thought only I'm finding YoMomma's post unhelpful. What she is saying is 100% right. But the way it is said is unhelpful to say the least.

actually Pacific was referring to fakebook and not to me Confused

I would have thought a certain level of sheer disbelief might shock you all into implementing better security in future tbh.

Will you be covered for the iPad on your insurance? x

babacoon · 21/10/2013 15:11

Oops YoMomma. I did mean to say fakebook. I think we would be covered by the insurance. It's not the money I'm worried about tbh.

You said you don't even want to talk to your ds atm which implies you think he's to blame somehow.

You live somewhere that is so secure that robberies are out of the question?Confused

babacoon · 21/10/2013 15:51

yes valium we do. why are you perplexed? Is it not possible?

OP posts:
babacoon · 21/10/2013 15:55

valium its just that DS is a hyper child and a lot of effort goes in containing him . He is very well behaved so doesn't through tantrums or anything, but he does need to be reminded a lot to be careful where he is going etc etc. I'm not angry just upset and worried.

I am pretty sure that remote wiping is possible. A lot of people at work have iPads that have been issued by the company and we have been told that if the iPad gets lost it can be re-set to factory settings to protect data. Get onto Apple and find out asap.

friday16 · 21/10/2013 16:00

I am pretty sure that remote wiping is possible.

I suspect it isn't if Find My iPad hasn't been configured.

babacoon · 21/10/2013 16:07

thanks Hawthorn. DH is finding out/ speaking to Apple support.

I'm sorry my post is unhelpful, but I also agree with Valium, you're blaming a child for something that is your fault. Not talking to him, blaming his tantrums for lack of password...it's not his fault. But I do feel sorry for you.

Also, where do you live? I think the fact your iPad has been stolen from an obscure hedge shows that thieves are indeed rife in the area. Who's to say your house won't be burgled in the future?

I hope an honest person has handed it in to the local police station or it turns up.

lborolass · 21/10/2013 16:13

I wouldn't give up hope, if you live somewhere where they re no robberies then isn't it most likely that someone has found it and handed it in to the police or other authorities. Have you checked with any such places near where it was lost? It might even just have fallen off the wall and be hidden somewhere.

Fingers crossed you get it back (only on MN would it be considered helpful to point out that you should have had better security)

valiumredhead · 21/10/2013 16:15

I am perplexed as there's no where where robberies are out of the question, less likely maybe but you can't ever rule a robbery out. I think you are very naive if you think you could never be robbed.

Anyway, live and learn from this, have everything locked and protected in future.

SoupDragon · 21/10/2013 17:18

Did you see that she is an Expat? There is a good chance she live on a private gated development with no robberies.

Nice bit of victim blaming going on here Wink

valiumredhead · 21/10/2013 17:32

Yeah I did see that but what I'm trying to say is that kind of thinking where you presume there are no robberies EVER lulls you into a false sense of security where you don't think you need to password protect your ipads/phones etc. and you do, regardless of if you live in Buckingham palace or in the middle of Grand Theft Auto!

I'm not victim blaming, I'm just aghast that people would have all that important info on a tablet and not have it protected.

As I said you live and learn.

MrTumblesKnickers · 21/10/2013 17:32

I live in something like a gated community, since it was built 18 years ago there haven't been any robberies - so the head of the housing association tells me proudly every now and again!

I do wonder what will happen when I have to go back to the real world and start remembering to lock my door.

valiumredhead · 21/10/2013 17:33

No robberies YET.

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 21/10/2013 17:36

Only only mumsnet. Kick a dog when it is down, eh?
I hope you get it sorted out, OP. I would be gutted if I lost my iPad Sad

valiumredhead · 21/10/2013 17:43

Oh sorry, the thread title asked for points of view.

OP hope you get it sorted

valiumredhead · 21/10/2013 17:44

Sorry I missed off a smiley. Smile , genuine not PA.

babacoon · 21/10/2013 18:45

Thank you everyone for your replies. We live in a very low crime area and I never thought I need to lock something that we just use at home. But yes lesson learnt.

We have lodged an FIR, have spoken to relevant shops just in case someone tries to sell it and sent an email to one of our mails as well requesting the finder to return it.

We can only hope it turns up somehow.
Only on mumsnet could I have expected to receive such helpful advice at such short notice.

Thank you:)
