Never mind...

wickeddevil · 23/10/2013 19:18

Valium has said it for me. It's a baking competition. For people who can actually bake.

Yes I know it is all about TV, that's why Ruby got into the final, while better bakers were sent home.

Not her fault, but she has benefitted. And If she is as intelligent as is claimed, then surely she must realise that she was lucky to make it past week 3.

valiumredhead · 23/10/2013 19:19

Oh go on TeeGrin

bickie · 23/10/2013 19:25

When she was winning star baker? Why don't you think she can bake? I didn't follow it that closely - but never got the impression she couldn't bake?

Mintyy · 23/10/2013 19:31

Vile thread. Not much shocks me on Mumsnet but this one sure has.

Rhubarbgarden · 23/10/2013 19:39

Agree, Mintyy.

bickie · 23/10/2013 19:45

So glad you said that Mintyy. I don't come on mn much anymore - but whenever I have popped my head on for a night of trawling I get so depressed by what's on it. I used to think MN showed the best of what women can be - compassionate, strong, funny wise. Now I usually see the worst that women can be - insecure, bitchy, judgemental ... This thread depressed me so much. So good to know that it is particularly bad example.

Mintyy · 23/10/2013 19:55

Ruby has achieved an awful lot at a very young age. Her piece in the Guardian today was well written and persuasive.

mignonnette · 23/10/2013 19:56

I am more impressed by Ruby achieving a leader in the Guardian. THAT is an amazing opportunity.

Well done Ruby.

And well done to Frances and Kimberley who were both my personal favourites to win. I think and hope that they will all be offered new opportunities and that Kimberley finds a backer for her charitable baking enterprise.

Some real witchy behaviours on here.

TEErickOrTEEreat · 23/10/2013 20:04

Seriously, I don't even remember what I was going to ask. That's what happens when you're on your phone trying to put a grabby handed 4 year old to bed!

I am still wondering why this particular thread is vile, though. As opposed to the vileness on Apprentice threads or other 'talent' shows on TV.

The double standard is really very interesting!

valiumredhead · 23/10/2013 20:07

Maybe because she's young Tee, people feel protective?

Bloke last year was the same age though.

I haven't been following the thread in Telly addicts, but this thread is tame compared to the daily mail comments.

valiumredhead · 23/10/2013 20:08

If people think this thread is vile they should take a look at BB threadsShock Grin

Mintyy · 23/10/2013 20:11

I hardly watch tv and I almost never read the threads about tv on here, so I have no vileness standard to compare compare it to. I think quite a lot, not all, of the posts on here are vile in their own right.

valiumredhead · 23/10/2013 20:14

So have you actually watched GBBO?

Mintyy · 23/10/2013 20:15

Yes

chocoluvva · 23/10/2013 20:16

Em, nobody as far as I know has criticised her for being pretty Confused

Most people(I'm one of them) have said they've found her irritating which is hardly vitriolic!

I also annoy myself with my irritation at seeing someone say the sort of things she says when I was younger! But she does slightly spoil the programme for me. Eg, when she commented that getting married is a narcissistic thing to do I felt like I was back in sixth form with the 'cool' crew who were desperately trying to appear sophisticated and cynical. I just can't be bothered with that sort of thing now - it's not what I'm watching GBBO for. I'm married! I don't appreciate someone three years older than my DD accusing me of being narcissistic.

And the comment about spending the week playing with her cat instead of practising (in her teeny, tiny flat) had a similar effect. And those bitter tears make me feel embarrassed for her. Is her flat in London? Em, one of the most expensive cities in the world.

Actually I do feel a bit sorry for her having to read all the criticisms about herself. But they've been about her behaviour on a tv programme not about her. There is a difference.

chocoluvva · 23/10/2013 20:18

I was relieved that it wasn't just me who found themselves surprisingly irritated by her.

bickie · 23/10/2013 20:19

I also don't follow tv threads - as don't watch the shows. But do quite like GBBO. I guess it feels particularly cruel because to me (at least) she seems a nice girl who put herself on a baking show. I could imagine her being my daughter (fingers crossed my own DC's turn out as well) To then have this rubbish about her flirting, faking, moaning etc. pretty much saying she is prostituting herself to win the show. It just seems sexist, and awful.

Mintyy · 23/10/2013 20:21

Yep, horribly sexist.

Mintyy · 23/10/2013 20:23

She is just barely out of sixth form.

Oh I could go on but shan't bother. It seems a low form of entertainment to me to rip a 20 year old to shreads.

chocoluvva · 23/10/2013 20:31

Who's ripping "a 20 year old to shreds"?

I'm more Hmm about the criticism of Kimberley.

Chippednailvarnish · 23/10/2013 20:46

"wine soaked bitter brigade" is far nastier than the majority of the criticism levelled at Ruby on this thread.

This thread would never have been started if Ruby had showed the personality that she displayed in her Guardian article in the actual competition and the rest of her bakes had of been to the standard of last night's picnic basket.

Regardless of what I think of her opinions voiced in the Guardian, at least the way she came across seemed far more genuine.

Confused
bickie · 23/10/2013 21:04

Sorry chippednails - but are you kidding? You started a thread hoping that Mel slapped a 20 year old girl. It was personal and about someone who has not said a nasty word about anyone. How you can not recognise that your comments are cruel and unnecessary and unprovoked is extraordinary.
