reading another thread I am genuinely interested in the science behind how a woman could artificially inseminate themselves to get pregnant if their significant other has ejaculated into a cup of some sort.

Turkey baster?
I'm just wondering why anyone would do so. Obviously different if you are talking about a "donor" but why anyone's "significant other" would prefer to do things that way is beyond me (right now anyway, I might work it out in a bit)

thebody · 14/10/2013 18:51

think another thread was about a posters dh who couldn't ejaculate when in the zone due to expectations.

RevelsRoulette · 14/10/2013 18:51

You find some way to insert it as close to the cervix as possible. Some sort of pipette, probably.

I wonder how long sperm lives for. You know, the untreated stuff, not the frozen for later use stuff.

DoJo · 14/10/2013 18:54

I think that the whole 'turkey baster' thing is based in reality - something long enough to get right up there and shoot it in. Now, if I can just erase that image from my mind before I get back to work, that would be lovely.

spongebob13 · 14/10/2013 18:55

was wondering that too .. it would have to get into the cervix otherwise pointless and wondered what sort of home tool you would use that wouldn't involve a trip to A&E.

You buy a syringe.

We did this because of erectile difficulties DH has and has had since a terrible accident in his 20s. It took a few tries but we got there.

spongebob13 · 14/10/2013 18:58

medicine syringe? jaysus will never look at ds's nurofen syringe in the same way again. I guess that could work. but does not doing the deed itself not make the cervix open more? or am I talking shite?

OP posts:
spongebob13 · 14/10/2013 18:59

really babydueinmarch? wow!!! congratulations. so it does work? can I ask you what you used? tell me to feck off if you want. yeah I guess the cervix doesn't have to be open.

What a completely banal thread.

I hope it dies soon. Yawn.

butterflyuk83 · 14/10/2013 19:00

A 10ml syringe is what a lot of ladies who use sperm donors use to inseminate.

Oh and someone asked how long sperm lasts for once it is 'out'
Generally it lasts about 15-20mins, after that it will start dying and be useless.

I know all this because I am TTC using a sperm donor :)

Confused see that little x on the top right there PeriodFeatures, click it. problem solved.

babydueinmarch · 14/10/2013 19:02

SpongeBob - to be honest we just ordered a pack from amazon (if you put in artificial insemination into the search it will show you!) - we got a full pack for £30 including ovulation tests, pregnancy tests, cups and syringes Grin

In our case we "made love" prior to inserting the semen - I'm saying made love as we didn't have full penetrative sex but we felt close and this opened my cervix.

Lesbian friends of mine did the same so yes it does work :) It is trickier than sex as (apologies) spillages are easy but if you don't have any other option you don't have any other option!

VinegarDrinker · 14/10/2013 19:02

Yes, it works. My DH was conceived by turkey baster.

babydueinmarch · 14/10/2013 19:02

Good luck butterfly. :)

spongebob13 · 14/10/2013 19:04

wow thought it would be harder than that for some reason or more painful lol

OP posts:
spongebob13 · 14/10/2013 19:05

and yes good luck butterfly :-)

ToTheTeeth · 14/10/2013 19:05

Through the cervix!? Where do people think the penis goes? Or is my DP just not putting in enough effort?

catsoup · 14/10/2013 19:05

PeriodFeatures what a completely banal comment. Hope you go away soon.

spongebob13 · 14/10/2013 19:06

lol i thought if it was AI it would have to be put into the cervix. obviously doing the deed you wouldn't need to. every day's a school day!

OP posts:
PeriodFeatures · 14/10/2013 19:12

If you are AI'ing. you need something long.. if it hurts it is more likely to work. The pain is the syringe and sperm crossing the cervix.

Also if you are doing this don't mention it to (even the most trusted) of friends as they might come up with the tedious question..

'are you going to use a turkey baster?'

then you will be embarrassed..............

Good luck all you AI's out there, the nosey bastards who think it's a joke. Fuck off.

maras2 · 14/10/2013 19:15

OMG Spongebob.Did you go to the same convent school as me?

PeriodFeatures · 14/10/2013 19:16

Good Luck Butterfly.....it's a helluva undertaking but the results are amazing :) I have a beautiful DD now. I had clomid as well which helped things along. If you struggle for the first couple of attempts go to your GP. Mine was great.

PeriodFeatures · 14/10/2013 19:17

spongebob it is fucking painful Grin
