reading another thread I am genuinely interested in the science behind how a woman could artificially inseminate themselves to get pregnant if their significant other has ejaculated into a cup of some sort.

I don't think anyone's taking the piss.

It actually was a turkey baster that got used back in the pre internet days when my DH was being conceived.

PeriodFeatures · 14/10/2013 19:19

vinigar it's just a bit of a point of reference that people tend to have a laugh about IME.

Bit sensitive me here. I should've stepped away from the thread....!!

PeriodFeatures · 14/10/2013 19:20

vinegar even

RiaOverTheRainbow · 14/10/2013 19:21

I'm pretty sure you should not put anything through your cervix. Certainly not without medical advice.

RevelsRoulette · 14/10/2013 19:23

Can I just point out that I didn't say through the cervix. I said as close to it as possible! In case my saying "as close to the cervix as possible" is why people have started talking about shoving it through the cervix.

FacebookWanker · 14/10/2013 19:28

Friends of mine did it and have two boys to show for it. They were a lesbian couple and the sperm was donated by a friend.

CynthiaRose · 14/10/2013 19:40

I had it done at a clinic, rather than do it myself, and yes, it fucking knacks. Well worth it though.

valiumredhead · 14/10/2013 19:46

Nothing should cross into the cervix should it? Eek!

My immediate thought was a nurofen syringeGrin

PeriodFeatures · 14/10/2013 19:49

Cynthia almost worse than childbirth pain...................

PumpkinGuts · 14/10/2013 21:29

syringe. Pcos meant we had no idea when I ovulated and frankly dh and I couldn't have sex every day for 4 months just incase So used them occasionally..

spongebob13 · 14/10/2013 21:36

i wasn't taking the mick at all!! ffs it was a genuine question!

Periodfeatures is having you on. Of course it doesn't hurt!

It's not rocket science; you just use a small syringe to squirt the stuff up. No need to cross the cervix. Best used after ten minutes but within the hour.

It is simple and it works (I have the eight year old to prove it).

Balaboosta · 14/10/2013 22:17

Use a penis beaker

CynthiaRose · 14/10/2013 22:37

Well it really bloody hurt the 4 times I had it done.

VinegarDrinker · 14/10/2013 22:43

IUI is the process of actually inserting it into the uterus ie through the cervix

Devora · 14/10/2013 22:47

Yup, IUI would hurt. But DIY at home, you're not going through the cervix (or bloody shouldn't be) so it's completely painless.

CynthiaRose · 14/10/2013 23:18

Oh yeah, that'll be it! Sorry, being dozy tonight.

Lweji · 14/10/2013 23:57

Through the cervix!? Where do people think the penis goes? Or is my DP just not putting in enough effort?

LOL

Anyway, during ovulation the cervix is more receptive, egg white mucous (which facilitates survival of sperm and is a good medium to support sperm swimming) is produced.

For more info

The main problem with home made AI is keeping the sperm fresh if it's not produced during the time of ovulation. But that includes from 5 days before to 2 days after.

Lweji · 14/10/2013 23:59

At a clinic they are more likely to insert sperm through the cervix to give it a better shot.
They are also more likely to give the woman hormones to stimulate ovulation to produce more than one egg.

FeministPixie · 15/10/2013 00:18

i think the cup someone was referring to is a softcup, which is a disposable version of a mooncup usually used as an alternative to tampons.

I suppose it stops it dribbling out. Maybe using both a syringe and a softcup would make for backup just in case of the dribbles.

  • disclaimer: i am childfree by choice so my knowledge goes as far as preventing conception, not TTC.
cleopatrasasp · 15/10/2013 02:28

You would never insert anything into the cervix using AI at home because semen should NEVER enter the cervix - only sperm. During DIY AI you inject the semen into the vagina and the sperm then swims up into the cervic leaving the semen behind. When people undergo IUI (where sperm is put into the cervix using a catheter), that sperm has already been separated from the semen.

I have undergone both IUI and (occasionally) home AI and it never hurt once so I am at a loss why some people are describing it as really painful.

CharityFunDay · 15/10/2013 02:41

According to Kitty Kelley's biography The Royals, both the Queen and Princess Margaret were conceived via the 'turkey baster' method, because George VI had erectile problems.

I like to imagine a gold-plated syringe made specially for the purpose.

If it's good enough for Royalty...

Icelollycraving · 15/10/2013 09:05

I was really baffled. I thought the AI meant all inclusive Blush
