To ask if anyone has got pregnant with a Mirena Coil?

Is this possible? If so how (what went wrong) and how did you realise (with no periods).

I know someone who has, and unfortunately it led to an ectopic pregnancy, which resulted in termination. I think she noticed when she developed signs of the ectopic pregnancy (pain, bleeding)

She was quite ill and in hospital for a while, but made a full recovery.

I haven't. However a friend has - nothing went wrong as such, she started to feel pregnancy symptoms, took a test, was positive and then had the mirena removed (fairly early in pg, baby is 18 months now). I've also anaesthetised a few people for termination of pregnancy and removal of mirena at the same time.

The coil can fall out without people realising and not all people with a mirena stop having periods.

I did. It was ectopic and found out when it ruptured. The coil was still in the correct place.

I thought it was supposed to be a 3 pronged attack and stops you ovulating.

As with all contraception nothing is 100% safe, and yes on the rare occasion you can get pregnant while on the coil.

My friend did. Her son was 13 in July.

If you have any suspicion to are pregnant you need to see your gp ASAP.

I carried on having periods for the 7 years I had my mirena, no pg but one pg scare (10 days late) which the GP thought was stress related. If you keep on having periods that is normal, some women's don't stop.

Yes. they think it slipped out of place. I knew because I had incredibley sore boobs! He is 5 now.

Have had really sore boobs for a few months and not sure why and dawned on me today last time they felt this sore was when I was pg.

Have had Mirenas on and off for 16 yrs and never had periods on it.

Am sure I am just being paranoid.

Why not do a pregnancy test to put your mind at ease.

My boobs ached while I had a mirena, but suddenly they were so sore I couldnt bare to touch them, and taking my bra off made me cry. DH bought me a test when he saw that!

I've had a mirena for 14 years (not the same one!), with no periods.
I did have a scare about 4/5 years ago when I had extremely sore and swollen boobs (first sign of pg with me both times), I eventually did a test which was negative. The boobs calmed down over a couple of weeks and I've still no idea why it happened, it hadn't happened before or since.

You may get a neg test even if you are because of the coil. You need a blood test.

I have a mirena and am 50 next month. I guess it is unlikely that I could be that unlucky to fall pregnant at this stage... but I always thought the coil was virtually 100% reliable. I have had sore boobs on and off since I started using the mirena coil (8 years and counting), but no bleeding or spotting, thankfully.

I do. It was not a viable pregancy and was hugely upsetting. It seems the mirena is good at preventing an established uterine pregnancy. That's not teh same as preventing pregnancy altogether. I would never have one tbh.

My friend got pregnant, her dd is now four. I'm shocked at how many eptopic pregnancyies there are. That's awful.

No, it worked very well.

It's an extremely effective method of contraception but no method is 100 per cent - even sterilisations can fail.

i didn't know until i contracted and 'gave birth' to the coil and mc fetus in the shower one night.

would never trust it again. but i know some women get on with it.

The Mirena ia roughly as effective as female sterilization. The only form of contraception which is 100% infallible is keeping your legs crossed. Increased risk of ectopic pregnancy if you are unlucky enough to have a pregnancy is something that is well recognized and should be discussed pre fitting.

I don't think that is discussed enough though divegirl and friends of mine have talked about how much the reliability of the mirena is pushed.

I have never been told about the risk if an eptopic pregnancy and I have had at least 4 Mirenas.
