Is this possible? If so how (what went wrong) and how did you realise (with no periods).

Ta :)

The Mirena is actually more reliable than female sterilisation which has a failure rate of 1/200 women. The Mirena is the most effective contraception out there but the only contraception that is 100% effective is abstinence.

It doesn't stop ovulation. It's primary method of effect is by causing endometrial atrophy. It also can change cervical mucus.

MutantAndProud · 06/10/2013 21:59

Sorry I was wrong, it can stop ovulation but in less that 25% of women.

The risk of an ectopic with Mirena is less than the copper coil. The Mirena has a failure rate of 1/500 women.

MutantAndProud · 06/10/2013 22:00

Ah bloody iPad!

If you were to fall pregnant on Mirena then the risk of that pregnancy is 1/20.

BabylonReturns · 06/10/2013 22:04

DS is 18mths, and yes, he got past a Mirena!

Writerwannabe83 · 06/10/2013 22:09

I had a Mirena and was told about risk of ectopic pregnancy prior to it being inserted. I was told that the Mirena is not designed to stop ovulation and so conception can still occur. I continued to have regular periods for the entire duration of my Mirena being in place but they were every short lived and very light due to its effect on the endometrium lining. I have heard a few tales about women falling pregnant with a Coil in place. My husband's brother was conceived this way actually.

GreenPetal94 · 06/10/2013 22:28

Yes. Discovered I was pregnant when heavy bleeding was investigated. I was 9 weeks and there was a heart beat. The pregnancy miscarried naturally at 11 weeks. Maybe a good thing as ds1 was only 9 months, but at the time it was all very distressing and I was certainly planning to keep it, again the appauling advice to terminate at the hospital.

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 06/10/2013 22:30

Talking of mirena, how have you found your temper? It's been 8 wks since I started but I think I'm crosser. Is that hormones?

Or have I become a ragey mare suddenly?!?

Balaboosta · 06/10/2013 22:33

I got pregnant with the coil then had etopic, four months later my son was conceived very very lucky.

TrueToYou · 06/10/2013 23:02

Dsis had an ectopic pregnancy onit too

homeagain · 06/10/2013 23:39

I got pg with one, and it remained in the correct position. I had light periods with one in. When my period didn't arrive I took a test and found out I was pregnant. Had miscarriage shortly afterwards. I would never rely on one.

flyingspaghettimonster · 07/10/2013 02:31

I had my 3rd child with the mirena. the doctors said it must be ectopic, but he was in my womb and it was a fairly straight forward pregnancy. apart from the shock.

there is a big court case going ahead in the Usa for those who had bad experiences with mirena.
