To have a second glass of wine (pregnant)

FlightMode · 05/10/2013 22:29

I'm not a big drinker, half a glass a week is the most I've had in pregnancy (not much more when not pregnant) -am 25 wks

But DH brought home a really, really nice bottle of red tonight and I had one small glass with dinner - it was lovely. I've just poured myself another. Doubt I'll finish it, but is it terrible to even start it?

Have as much as you like, its not going to do any harm.

CocacolaMum · 05/10/2013 22:31

fuck knows but you probably just opened a can o' worms.

your body, your baby..

meditrina · 05/10/2013 22:33

As a one off, a couple of glasses won't matter.

Though the typical home poured glass is rarely the 125ml that's the trad definition of small.

footballagain · 05/10/2013 22:33

Are you really asking for our opinion?

FlightMode · 05/10/2013 22:34

Yes, I really am

Make DH recork the bottle and have a glass another day.
Bet if you worked out the volume you've had an the alcohol % of a nice red it's already several units.

dancemom · 05/10/2013 22:35

My opinion is don't drink it.

WorraLiberty · 05/10/2013 22:36

How big is your wine glass?

Mine's massive...about 2 1/2 times the size of a pub glass Grin

divegirl77 · 05/10/2013 22:36

FFS a couple of glasses of wine on one evening are not going to cause FES. Enjoy the second glass (and maybe even a third!).

SPsTwerkingNineToFive · 05/10/2013 22:37

Worra I have a glass that holds a bottle! Its great when I say I'm only having a glass Grin

FlightMode · 05/10/2013 22:38

worra it's one of those huge goblet glasses

not even 1/4 filled though Grin

its not just the alcohol volume though is it - if you've not drunk for a while then 2 glasses COULD be enough to make you more clumsy than usual surely?

YouTheCat · 05/10/2013 22:39

Have it. Savour it and enjoy.

PeppiNephrine · 05/10/2013 22:39

You are (presumably) a grown woman, you don't need the permission of a bunch of randoms on here.

milkysmum · 05/10/2013 22:39

The occasional couple of glasses of wine in pregnancy at this stage in development will be fine. enjoy x

CHJR · 05/10/2013 22:39

Here's the thing (and as a mum of a SN DC I've been waiting years to say this...) if anything by coincidence should later be wrong with the child, do you really want to spend decades wondering?
Note the wine label and get it again after the birth, and tell DH to save his £££ now for chocolates. I say this though my BRAIN insists DS's injuries were not my fault.

FlightMode · 05/10/2013 22:41

Hmm that's true - am just going to bed though after this and we don't have stairs

It's a Tesco finest wine - is that vair uncouth?

divegirl77 · 05/10/2013 22:41

All the evidence around problems are with sustained excessive intake. Problem is it will never be considered ethical to do a trial for exactly that reason.

CocacolaMum · 05/10/2013 22:42

as an aunt of a sn dc I echo CHJR, have it if you want it but honestly I have been on the other end of that conversation about whether she could have done ANYTHING to stop the damage done (she couldn't) and its heartbreaking.

PeppiNephrine · 05/10/2013 22:43

Don't do that to other people then CHJR. The implication that any problem OP's kid has might be her own fault because she had a glass of wine, its both nonsensical and unfair.

Shellywelly1973 · 05/10/2013 22:43

Wtf CHJR??

I say this as a mum of 2 sn dc...drink the bloody wine!!

Omg... the martyrdom on mn drives me mental.

Enjoy!

AmberDextrous · 05/10/2013 22:44

Have the wine, relax, enjoy yourself
Go by how your body feels. If you feel fine then just enjoy your evening it sounds lovely

TwoMuchTwoYoung · 05/10/2013 22:44

Would you put the wine in a bottle and give it to your baby?
I don't understand why people just can't give up for 9 months?
I have looked after a few children with FAS, not worth the risk, I know others will disagree but you did ask.

YouTheCat · 05/10/2013 22:45

Of course 2 small glasses of wine are bound to cause massive problems Hmm ffs seriously

Large amounts need to be consumed very often for there to be a negative effect.

Tbh through most of my pregnancy I was either throwing up or had massively awful heartburn and having a drink was the last thing I wanted.

roadwalker · 05/10/2013 22:46

no-one really knows if it can cause harm. It depends on the development of the brain. If the brain is at a very active stage of development it is very vulnerable and damage lasts a lifetime
