Baby given cream

Hi, My baby is almost 5 months - i am waiting till 6 months before BLW
Today someone has fed baby whipped cream and I am really worried as I thought baby shouldn't have cream till at least 12months.

I'm angry at myself for having back turned which meant this could happen but also really worried that it could cause problems such as allergies as baby digestive system is still maturing.

What are peoples thoughts.

Unless your baby is lactose intolerant, it is very unlikely to have caused any problems. Until fairly recently babies were weaned at 4 months without too many issues. Giving cows milk as a drink isn't recommended until 12 months, but I think other dairy is OK from 6 months (assuming no allergies).

You shouldn't switch to cows milk until 12 months. It has salt in it. A tiny bit of whipped cream won't overload their system. It's done now, I wouldn't be happy but it won't do LO any harm.

I'm sure your baby will be fine. However it was not anyone else's business to feed your baby. I don't know of anyone who would hold a tiny 5 month d and think - let's feed it something. That would piss me off tbh. If baby was a year maybe I'd not think too much of it but 5 months? No way

It shouldn't be their main drink before 12 months, but you can use it in meals.

Do you know I didn't know that about cream. Sure mine may well have had spoon of creamy pudding at 5/6 months. Both fine.

You can start cooking/making things with cows milk at 6 months, MrsTP. Just not as their main food or drink.

According to the NHS guidance they can have cows milk after 6 months but not as a drink. I'd be kicking off about feeding while your back was turned though, that needs to be nipped in the bud. Presumably this person had no way of knowing whether your baby has allergies? Actually that's why it's recommended to introduce things like cows milk and peanuts one at a time so you can make sure there aren't any allergies.

I think the Baby will be fine, but YANBU and what and when the Baby is fed should be up to you (and it's a bit random to give cream to someone else's unweaned child and would set my back up).

As others say - it will be fine. Just be clear with the person that you will not tolerate a repeat.

That could have killed my baby so I'd have gone absolutely apeshit if someone fed that to my child. After giving him adrenalin, calling 999 and spending a night in hospital of course.

Wtf gives people the right to feed other peoples babies without permission??

It will be ok.

But honestly, I'd stop who ever was doing it from feeding your baby whenever they want. That sort of thing drove me batshit with ds. My dad was always feeding him bits of crap behind my back.

baby seams ok I was very concerned as I am intolerant to dairy and it causes my IBS to flair up very badly so I don't have dairy and so my Breastmilk is Dairy free too.
The person who did it was visiting as a one off and so won't get the opportunity to do something like that again thankfully.
I just couldn't believe that it happend - and still can't believe that the person thought it was acceptable to feed someone elses baby that they hardly know

Sorry to hear you're so worried. I'm sure it'll be fine. DMil gave DS a sip of her champagne when he was about 5 months. I had to really bite my lip. I was pretty angry but we were at a family wedding. Anyway, he's 5 now and there was no harm done. I think a tiny bit of something is no problem at all.

Try and relax about it the person was being a twat though assuming they could give your baby a taste of cream I cant see it affecting the baby though try and not panic

My dh just told me that an elderly relative gave dss clotted cream [about a tablespoonful!!] in little bits when he was 10 weeks old! She was minding him while dh and his now ex dw went to the doctors-they were gone about half an hour-she was very proud of herself.There were no ill effects at all but the parents were not amused.

A taste of cream does not cause allergies. And cows milk doesn't have salt in it, you prob mean sodium, which breastmilk and formula also have.

It's not something people should do, but its not a deal.

Your baby will be fine, but where does that person get off feeding your baby?!

Also, your story is completely trumped by the PP whose baby was given champagne. Incredible.

My bil tried to give my ds icing sugar when he was about 4 months old...the kind with lots of colourant and on cupcakes. My ds wasn't weaned and also had severe reflux with slow weight gain. Some people are just really thick and overstep. Yanbu.

There are a lot of people who seem to be obsessed with feeding other people's babies bits of food. It verges on the ridiculous sometimes. My dad did it all the time with ds, my MIL does it with my nephews, always sticking her fingers in things (inc wine) and putting it in their mouths.

She does it with my baby when it arrives I'll chop her bloody fingers off.

Just to put your mind at rest further, my MIL fed my 8 week old DS creme brûlée before I had chance to stop her (following a lengthy discussion about how I was bfing and that was all he had). He is now 14 months and completely fine, no allergies or intolerances. I still. However, haven't forgiven her and don't think I ever will. Grrrrrrr.
