onenut, that shadow one is horrible! Shock

I have always wanted to add to a spooky thread, but as most of my friends know my stories I haven't wanted to out myself. I have name changed especially Smile

I have loads, I may add as I remember more.

When I was about 7 I was at home one evening with just my Dad, my Mum was at evening classes and my elder brothers were out. Dad was having a bath as he'd not long got in from work.

We had a double doored cupboard in the hallway, we kept coats, boots and various odds and sods in there including hot water bottles. I went to get my hot water bottle out and as I opened the doors...a man sort of jumped out at me! well he stood there and kind of lunged forward at me.

I screamed and ran upstairs to where my Dad was, Dad jumped out of the bath, pulled on his trousers and came down to find the 'man' there was no one there of course, but I know what I saw.

Later my Mum 're-enacted' what happened, trying to convince me that what I saw was the coats that were hung on the inside of the door swinging out at me, but it really wasn't that.

Shortly before I moved into a flat I used to live in, I went round to do some bits of decorating etc, as I approached the flat I saw a woman with grey hair standing at the window looking out, I thought that I must have got the wrong window [ie not my flat] but I now know it was my window.

At the same flat and on different occasions all 3 of my children 'saw' this old woman, one particularly scary time we were all in my bedroom, me and my DP in bed [was a sunday morning] and the children playing on the floor. one of my sons said 'the woman on the window sill says 'get out of her room' I said to him 'its my room' and without repeating what I said he said 'she said just get out' That was a bit Shock

Another time in the same flat the same son that said /\ gave me a fright, I was tucking him into bed and he said 'Mummy, those people who stand in my door way at night...what do they want?' the hair on the back of my neck prickled but I managed to reassure him.

Same son, but at this house we live in now. He said a little boy called Frederick talks to him, this little boy said that he works in a mill and his job is to get under the machines and do something to them when they stop working.

He also said that there is a man that stands on the landing whistling.

Will add more...

*as I was typing the man in the cupboard one, my electric cut out and I had to go to my hall cupboard to flick the trip switch back up Shock Grin

My Mum lost her doorkeys once, she is a very neat and tidy 'place for everything' sort of person, so it was a real mystery, she searched everywhere couldn't find them at all. a few days later she sat down at the dining table and immediately felt her keys underneath the seat cushion, no way could they have been there all the time as she would have felt them before [she sat at that chair several times a day] no small children in the house or visiting so not put there by a child. That has happened with a few things, only for them to 'appear' in an obvious place a few days later.

When my brother and his DP moved into their house, their DD (my DN) was about 3. After a few weeks, my DN said "there's a man in my bedroom" when she had gone up to play in there. Of course, when they went to look, no one there. A few weeks later, "why is that man living with us." She wasn't scared though. Then one night, when DB was alone in the house and lying in his bed reading, he distinctly heard footsteps up from the living room and the bathroom door slamming.

In the end, they got some advice about how to get the person "out" of the house.

Asleep alone as dh away. Woke to see a green 'laser' light in the room coming from between the top of the door and the ceiling. The light went from side to side in the room. I was absolutely terrified but forced myself ( with all the courage I could muster) to turn on the bedside light. I looked at the clock- 3.33 am. So I googled the numbers. First thing that came up was about Angels. Spirit guides giving encouragement. I am having a toughish time at the moment and it kinda did inspire me. But WEIRD !
Weirder still, I was telling my sister and she ( at the first mention of green light in the room) said she had, in her home, though downstairs, watching tv, seen a green laser light in the room.

I used to live in a flat in a very old building, parts of it were tudor. Next door was supposed to be haunted. Every time, and I mean EVERY time I would come homethe hanging light upstairs in the shared hallway would start to swing like crazy. The longer I lived there the more violent it would get. Sometimes I would hear a tinkling sound as I walked upstairs to my flat and it would be the bulb smashing against the ceiling. This gpt more recurrent. One day I just said out loud to the light 'please stop smashing bulbs. They're expensive and I can't afford them. I don't want to walk up here in the dark as you doing this freaks me out'. The bulb never smashed again although the light would swing a bit on occasion.

Next door ended up selling their flat though. They were spooked by chairs scraping in the middle of the night, doors slamming, and they would often wake up to hear someone whistling.
Spooooooooooooky!!!!

It didn't bother me after I spoke to it. If they were nasty ghoulies I'm sure they wouldn't have been so agreeable over the light. But then, I never had anything going on inside my flat. But my cat would sometimes play on his own as though someone was dangling something at him.

Have spent hours a few minutes reading this thread and the urban legends one this morning. Decided to have a relaxing bath, so asked DH if he'd make me a cup of tea and leave it by the bathroom door. I ran the bath and there was a knock at the door and the chink of a mug being put down on the tiles outside. Collected it, it was made exactly how I like it so i drank it during my wallow.
Just walked into the kitchen and said 'thanks for the tea pet'. Cue DH -' no need to be sarcastic, I just forgot. Do you want it now instead?'
He won't admit it's a wind up....

I have loads too but will tell you two.

When my eldest was 9 months, we moved into a rented house that had an outhouse attached to the side with a door leading from the kitchen.
The house was only built in the 1950's but I constantly would have toys going off and would often hear someone calling my name when the house was empty.

It was in a little close so we were friendly with the neighbours. One had moved in as a child and had inherited the house. She gave me the history and said a Man had lived there as long as she could remember but he died in the outhouse.

When my daughter was about 3, she would call any old man grandad. On this particular morning, she went to the kitchen side door, pulled back the curtain and was saying "look mum there's grandad, I want to play with grandad!" This was really weird as the outhouse was a bit of a junk room and we NEVER let our daughter out there.

Anyway as I was getting ready for work I unlocked the door and let her wander out. As I was organising my bag, I could hear her chatting away. Ready to leave for work I went out, she was looking up and talking as if someone was really there. I said we had to leave and after a winge she took my hand. As we went back into the kitchen, my daughter turned round and said "come on Grandad" then there was silence and she then said "Ok bye bye" and off we went.

We stayed there for 6 years in total before moving areas to another house. In the May we went to see a well known psychic (during this time we were debating whether to save for a deposit to buy this house). During this time, she told me (through my grandma who had passed) that I would not stay in this house but not to worry and John and Jill would help us.. Now even though common names, at this time I neither knew a Jill or John that I could think off.

The following October I was sitting in my living room, my Dh was upstairs bathing the kids. All of a sudden in front of me several toys went off at once in the toybox. I looked up and can only describe seeing the outline of my Grandma with like a liquid effect filling. I then heard a voice saying "house- it will be OK". I said out loud, if that is you please set the toys off again, at which point my DH came to talk to me and stood right where the vision had been. He was talking and all of a sudden all the toys went off again.

The next day my landlord came round to collect rent. He also came to tell me that he was moving and wanted to sell the house! Dh was in a panick, We didn't want to uproot our children from their school but could not find anything local and did not have enough deposit. However, I was fairly calm. Then over Christmas, our lovely neighbour from a couple of doors down called John passed away. As my DH walked to school one morning, his neighbour from the other side (who we had only ever smiled at) asked if we had heard the news. She made a comment about many people leaving (3 elderly neighbours had passed in 2 months and 2 moved house) and DH mentioned that we would soon be off too.

A week later that neighbour knocked on our door to say she had spoken to John's son and he was happy to rent us the house. That neighbour who is now our neighbour is called Jill and she is like an aunt to our children.

I have a weird one, I've only had this in the house I live in now. H works odd shifts, so I am on my own overnight 15 nights a month. This only ever happens when I'm alone but I'll be in bed about to fall asleep and my bed will start shaking.. Confused There's not enough space under the bed for anyone to be under there, the only possibilities a) a ghost shaking the mattress, or b) a spooky weirdo living in my mattress and wobbling around.. Confused

I have two, was going nc so as not to out me as I've told these plenty but on the mobile so can't be annoyed.

  1. my DGM was in a wheelchair since I was a child. One night I had a very strange dream about her getting up from her wheelchair then turning and smiling and waving at me and walking away. When I woke the next morning my parents came in to tell me that granny had died last night. Shock

  2. other side of the family, my DGF was a great big ox of a man, scared of nothing and nobody, no time for airy fairy nonsense.

He lived in the country and was in his teens when his mother was pregnant with the youngest. They were all sent out of the house when she was having the baby and DGF decided to go for a walk. It was just after dusk, getting dark, walking down an unlit lane in the 1920s.

Up ahead he sees a woman in white walking across a field on the right. She gets to the road, stops and smiles at him, then crosses the road into the field on the other side and disappears. He assumes he couldn't see her with fading light but finds it odd nonetheless as he thought he was close enough to see her go up the hill. He thought he recognised her but wasn't close enough to be sure.

He gets home... To discover his mother died in childbirth at around the same time he was in the lane... And suddenly realises why he recognised the woman in white.....

As I say, not a man to mess around or be scared of anything but he absolutely believed til the day he died that his mother came to say goodbye...

Very sad story but I really like it too.

Marking my place for tonight. There is a thread in chat, OP reduced to wearing a scarf to stop her ears being tapped at night.

The bed shaking thing is probably sleep paralysis which happens more when you're stressed thus explaining why it only happens when your DP isn't there.

When i was about 18 my DM asked if i had ever noticed anything spooky about our house. (This was prompted by me chatting to her about a horrid haunting i was experiencing at my work.) Id grown up in the house since birth and hadn't noticed anything.

Mum said that over the course of the 25 years or so that she had lived there she had seen a man standing in the hall in the dark on 5 or 6 occasions. He was dressed in a smart grey suit and was always standing with his face pressed against the wall near the front door. (!)

She went on to say that after a couple of sightings she had remembered that my Nan had told her that when the house was renovated in the 60s the door to the lounge had been moved from by the front door to further back up the hall.

The man in grey stands looking through a now non existent door way.

On holiday with dh. I had a dream that a black figure was holding me down on the bed. It had white eyes and a white mouth. I could not move and tried to cry out. Dh woke up and jumped out of bed started shouting "get off her". We both went back to sleep as it was early hours. Next morning dh described the figure to me which I saw in my dream....

My gran told us when she was a young girl she came in from work and sat down with a cup of tea at the kitchen table. When she looked down,a child's little hand was held out to her from under the table cloth as if asking for something. She thought it must be her little brother, and stood up,saying "Stop it, Tommy." As she stood there, she looked through the window and saw Tommy playing in the yard.
