To be upset by this incident in Sainsburys?

I've just been into Sainsburys with DS (2) who I always put into a trolley seat as it's quicker than him walking. Was in a hurry as didn't want to be late for school run and all the checkouts were busy. I only had 6 small things so I transferred them into a basket with Ds still trolley and went to the basket only aisle which was free. The cashier told me I was cheating, I said I had a basket, she said I should go and use one of the other aisles, I said there were none free and I did have a basket.

She huffed and told me I'd have to move DS out the aisle, which was really wide as the till next to it was closed and no one wax waiting in ours. I moved him to the end of the aisle and came back to my basket. She then pointed out her aisle was only for little bits, I said my basket had 6 small items. I felt quite humiliated by this
point, and annoyed especially
as I spend about £150 a week there!

Campion. You sound like you have too much time on your hands. This is a minor issue. What is the OP going to do? Sue Sainsburys for 'hurt feelings'.

If you dont like the policies of a shop then dont shop there.

There are many many other things to get bothered about in life. This is not one of them

campion · 19/09/2013 18:52

Who mentioned suing anyone? Keep your hair on.
The OP asked if we thought she was being unreasonable.

Some say yay and some say nay.Tis just an opinion

ThisWayForCrazy · 19/09/2013 18:55

Shop in waitrose! You'll have a much nicer timeGrin

handcream · 19/09/2013 19:01

yes, Waitrose for me... We have a Tesco near where I live (its the Gerrards Cross one). Tesco tried to get in for years. They have now built over the railway station (which then collasped if some remember!). The only way the residents of Gerrards X can now show their views is not to shop there. So we dont. Apart from using their loos and taking their special offers which have no margin in. Thats what I do!

campion · 19/09/2013 19:04

Can't disagree about Waitrose.

kali110 · 19/09/2013 19:18

Bad service even though they have operating policies? Why should they change the rules gor one?
It was baskets only, i wouldnt go there with a trolley and think im entitled too.
You do know these employees are only following rules set by their managers?
Its funny how people are called jobworths or other nasty names just because someone didnt get their own way.

usualsuspect · 19/09/2013 19:35

I love how you get called a jobsworth on MN, for doing your job.

Grin

Maybe supermarkets should have a special mnetter aisle.

edam · 19/09/2013 19:41

campion, what on earth happened with Tesco?

I use the basket aisle when I only have enough items to fill a basket. But I always use a shallow trolley as I've always got heavy bags. Bags in shallow trolley, six or seven items to put through the till. (In theory, sadly in my local Sainsbury's they've taken out proper tills for self-service so I often end up having to use them, which is a right pain.)

diddl · 19/09/2013 19:48

But the OP had the items she wanted to purchase in a basket-so why couldn't she use the aisle?

What did the fact that she was pushing her son in a trolley have to do with anything?

If he was holding her hand & walking, she would probably have been slower, what with having to keep an eye on him as well!

ghostspirit · 19/09/2013 19:54

omg how silly would be better if they had the 10 items or less sign instead so people working there cant moan for the sake of it... very petty

diddl · 19/09/2013 20:30

I think that the cashier was quite rude tbh.

OP had 6 items in a basket & cashier was arguing about it!

And the 10 or less-I'm a shortarse & 10 items in a trolley would take me longer than 10 in a basketBlush

MirandaGoshawk · 19/09/2013 20:33

YANBU. She was being utterly ridiculous. It's not as if you had a trolley load of stuff.

IamSlave · 19/09/2013 20:43

YANBU.

Its about volume of items not size of carrier for them!

Its about a small number of items, which you had op.

In Waitrose this would have been no problem, in waitrose they actually want to make sure your happy when you leave the shop.

kali110 · 19/09/2013 20:55

Agree with you there usualsuspect.
How many people on here would go against what their superiors have told them? I know i wouldnt go against them.
Plus the op has only said it was baskets only and not whether it was 10 items or less etc.
It said baskets only, not a trolley of it only has a few items....

No it doesn't make sense, but if your supervisor is constantly on your back about the stupid rules, you gonna stick to them.

Checkout staff are constantly monitored to make sure they stick to the rules.

That's a fact.

HoneyDragon · 19/09/2013 21:05

That's assuming a superior told her. The SA didn't say not allowed, she said cheating.

I hardly expect at the staff meeting that morning from the duty outlined the rules and regulations of checkout behaviour, its not like the op broke the shopping off side rule by using the trolly to keep a child safe.

In fact Sainsburys are at fault for not putting a child seat in the basket.

HoneyDragon · 19/09/2013 21:07

I'll slightly retract my remark. My line manager at would've come o with something that bloody daft. But we all at the professional sense to ignore him. Grin

IamSlave · 19/09/2013 21:09

I would have used my common sense and let her through, If my manager was daft enough to take it up with me, then I would go higher and challenge the rule. or faked stupidity and oh, I didn't realise, then keep doing it

IamSlave · 19/09/2013 21:11

I think we should all drop a quick email to Sainsburies customer services really and as MRS D says, mention that this rule discriminates as it does.

That the rule is there to prevent people with tons of shopping clogging up a quickie aisle, not a literal trolly with nothing much in it clogging up the aisle!

usualsuspect · 19/09/2013 21:16

I wouldn't be arsed to take it higher.

No wonder checkout staff hate working on the quick tills.

Where my DD works they dread being put on those tills. Non stop bloody moaning all day.

usualsuspect · 19/09/2013 21:20

Yay! MRSDV, so has mine. Grin

kali110 · 19/09/2013 21:25

Actually supermarkets do have daily meetings to state what they want the workers to do.
No i wouldnt go against what id been told as dont particually want to give my boss ammunition to moan at me.its up to the managers what rules they want to make and why so maybe should remember that the employees dont make the stupid rules up!
Please, discrimination? This is all getting ridiculous. If the shop had no way for disabled customers to shop then it would be but this case there isnt!
Basket only, why should op be treated differently? If they let everybody use it what would be the point in having one!
