To be upset by this incident in Sainsburys?

I've just been into Sainsburys with DS (2) who I always put into a trolley seat as it's quicker than him walking. Was in a hurry as didn't want to be late for school run and all the checkouts were busy. I only had 6 small things so I transferred them into a basket with Ds still trolley and went to the basket only aisle which was free. The cashier told me I was cheating, I said I had a basket, she said I should go and use one of the other aisles, I said there were none free and I did have a basket.

She huffed and told me I'd have to move DS out the aisle, which was really wide as the till next to it was closed and no one wax waiting in ours. I moved him to the end of the aisle and came back to my basket. She then pointed out her aisle was only for little bits, I said my basket had 6 small items. I felt quite humiliated by this
point, and annoyed especially
as I spend about £150 a week there!

I don't think all checkouts staff are like that though.

Some are quite nice really.

SauvignonBlanche · 19/09/2013 16:27

She sounds really mardy.

neverputasockinatoaster · 19/09/2013 17:01

I am a short arse and when DS was tiny I could never reach high enough to put his car seat in the special trolleys so I used to take a small trolley, put the car seat in that and get a few items. I always used t go to the trolley checkouts until one of the till operators beckoned me through the basket only aisle as she could see I only had a few things.

Now I have a ruined back and take a trolley even if I only need a few things as carrying a basket unbalances me. I go through the self checkout or a normal till but I wouldn't object if I was called through a basket till!

yabu - what if someone else with a trolley wanted to q behind you? they cant allow some to break rules & not others just because you were rushing & didnt want to be late. next time ditch the trolley & take a basket only through the basket only checkout :-)

I think yabu. Basket only is basket only.
If they bend the rules for one then they'll have to keep doing it.
Think its harsh saying shes a jobsworth.
If her managers are saying not to let trolleys through then theyre just following orders. If my manager told me to do something then i do it. Im not going to risk a bollocking.

ok - frew for all at the basket only checkout then ah?!

Viviennemary · 19/09/2013 17:51

Of course you were being unreasonable. You were using a trolley and it's baskets only. It doesn't mean a trolley and a basket.

Owllady · 19/09/2013 17:52

it sounds like really poor customer service to me

surely the trolley is only the same as someone going through with a pushchair or a wheelchair?

Owllady · 19/09/2013 17:54

how many lonely pedantic men are posting on this thread? Confused
meh you karnt tek a trolley thru
blah blah

the only reason it says basket only is because of the amount of items and it should be a quicker purchase

HoneyDragon · 19/09/2013 17:56

BUT SHE HAD A BASKET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

diddl · 19/09/2013 17:59

"It doesn't mean a trolley and a basket."Hmm

YANBU!

For those who are being pedantic:

OP had a basket! Basket had small amount of items in it!

The trolley was there to carry DS

There was not a room issue

The basket thing is to stop people with MASSIVE FILLED TROLLEYS from CLOGGING UP A QUICK-SERVE TILL

Why aren't people applying common sense here!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Gah it drives me mad. The lack of common sense, the pedantry, the inability to see what the underlying reasons are.

Why do you think there is a basket only rule? What is special about baskets? Let's think.

Ummmmm... they carry less items than trolleys!

OP had a basket with a few items. Trolley was nothing more than a pushchair equivalent.

handcream · 19/09/2013 18:06

These poor shops assistants cannot win. A basket only is for baskets only, it doesnt mean that doesnt apply to you! I get really annoyed about people who think that when its stated you cannot do something - it doesnt include them because they are 'special'!!

My SIL was complaining to me about not being allowed in an Adults Only very upmarket restaurant when her daughter was asleep in her buggy. She even complained to the manager and wanted to go around the tables to ask if anyone would mind if she came in with a child.....

Owllady · 19/09/2013 18:08

she had 6 items in a basket
she was using the trolley as a mobile toddler unit

LEMisdisappointed · 19/09/2013 18:13

Today in sainsbury i saw a saiinsbury assistant telling a mum with only a few things in her trolley to go and use the basket ailse

Owllady · 19/09/2013 18:19

with a trolley??
that's just shocking! Shock whatever next?! Shock

hashtagwhatever · 19/09/2013 18:19

right jobsworth. not sure I'd feel upset or humiliation about it though.

handcream · 19/09/2013 18:22

The thing is supermarkets cannot win. I find people who 'reserve' a space in the queue for their wife who is still shopping irriating as are the people who park in the disabled spaces because they are in a rush, have to take their DC to the doctors etc.

My DS was nearly run over a few years ago in the school car park by a stupid woman in a 4x4 who was parked in the unauthorised area of the school and was then having to back into kids walking into the school.

The silly cow was on the phone and because she was driving a large car she couldnt see well out the back. She didnt hear the parking sensors come on because she was on the phone claiming to try and get an appt at the doctors for her DD who had clearly just been dropped off at school so couldnt be THAT ill.

Its people who think the rules dont apply to them.... I wrote to the Head and to my DS's embarassment heread out the letter to the whole school asking the boys to take their parents to task everytime they wanted to park in an unauthorised area. The unauthorised area is out of bounds for everyone including you......

LEMisdisappointed · 19/09/2013 18:24

Grin Owl lady - i ws pointing out that some sainsburys people are nice

Owllady · 19/09/2013 18:26

I always find them nice in both of ours tbh too LEM :)
I have one who regularly asks me for ID for example, what a charmer!

Samnella · 19/09/2013 18:38

YANBU and being the gobshite that I am I would have told her to stop being such a jobsworth. You had 6 items not a full trolley full. You have said the aisle was plenty wide enough for a trolley so there was no problem. It's just pettiness.

campion · 19/09/2013 18:47

YWNBU
A little common sense goes a long way.

I'd have been straight round to customer services to discuss it further. And I do think your loyalty should matter to them-inflexible employees also.

I speak as someone who crossed Tesco off the list after they wouldn't sell me petrol because my car was
the wrong way roundHmm
