I don't know how I feel about this but a Facebook post has really made me think if a school canteen is halal or kosher then isn't it imposing a faith on its pupils? Or is it? I don't know so I defer to the wise ladies of Mumsnet for a decision

But you want to live in this country you should eat british meat

Disclaimer these are not my views

AdventureTed · 17/09/2013 20:56

MrsDeVere - I think that animal suffering should be limited as much as possible. That is the humane thing to do.

When you resort to personal insults, you have lost your argument. As I said, islam is not a race.

HopeS01 · 17/09/2013 20:56

I am Christian and a vegetarian, and I would certainly complain to my child's school if they only offered Halal meat.

Who thinks of these ridiculous new 'rules'? I'm sure even Halal-eaters (is it okay to say that?) would agree that this is unnecessary. I don't campaign for all meals to contain Quorn as opposed to meat!!!!

LoveSewingBee · 17/09/2013 20:57

As some others have pointed out, halal killing takes place without stunning the animals first. It is totally unnecessary and barbaric IMO. So on the grounds of this I would be very very strongly opposed and stick to packed lunch instead.

poachedeggs · 17/09/2013 20:58

Do people actually realise that religious slaughter means the animals are conscious when their blood vessels are severed? It's not the same meat either way, there are massive animal welfare issues.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/09/2013 20:58

Everyone knows fine exactly what Mrs De Vere meant..and she is right. .so it is somewhat disingenuous to bang on about Islam not being a race

mrsjay · 17/09/2013 20:58

ut what If you opposed to the slaughter of meat in a religious manner and just wanted your child to eat standardly butchered meat (for want of a better way of phrasing it!)

and do you think a non halal cow is hugged before it is fried in the brain ,

No i think it is sensible to have just one meat ,

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/09/2013 21:00

If the person who made the comment on Facebook cared at all about animal welfare o even knew about Halal slaughter I'd be hugely surprised.

poachedeggs · 17/09/2013 21:01

'Non halal cows' are rendered instantly unconscious before they are stuck.

Halal slaughter usually involves the cow being restrained with their neck extended in a rotating crush, then turned upside down and stuck while fully conscious. Forgive me but I perceive this to be more distressing than an instant stun performed with minimal restraint.

cows been squashed in a huge lorry probably been transported from abroad standing about in their own waste being scared for hours on end is also barbaric

Which is why we should be buying British meat. We have some of the highest welfare standards in the world here.

mrsjay · 17/09/2013 21:03

do you honestly think schools hand pick their cows for slaughter do people honestly believe that animal welfare is important to the suppliers of meat to schools,

YouTheCat · 17/09/2013 21:03

Anyone posting that EDL bollocks or who believes it might not be a racist. That is absolutely true.

But they'd be a vile bigot all the same.

YouTheCat · 17/09/2013 21:03

Damn, needs a comma after 'it'.

I do hope you don't mean I am browmnosing mrs DV just because I said she.was right Hmm

eineschlampa · 17/09/2013 21:06

Oh and the typical turning an argument around into making out posters who disagree are racists. Yawn typical liberals.

YouTheCat · 17/09/2013 21:06

How is it brown nosing if my opinion happens to agree with another poster? Or a few posters happen to agree with each other?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/09/2013 21:07

It is called. .agreeing with someone

HopeS01 · 17/09/2013 21:07

OP, a great opportunity for you to raise awareness of animal welfare.

Eineschlampa..can you read.

People said the people who share stuff like that on FB tend to be racists.

Which is the truth.

YouTheCat · 17/09/2013 21:09

I totally agree with Mrs DeV, and I say that as an omnivore.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 17/09/2013 21:09

IMO the reason people share posts like this on FB is down to hatred of Islam and xenophobia

And the animal welfare argument is separate
