To think that if you are selling mince pies on September 13th...

They ought to have a long expiry date?

Well they did I suppose. 21st October though the ones I bought will not be needing to worry about that

What the Christmas-jingle-hell is this about? We're supposed to be holding Xmas soirees mid-October before I get the Halloween decorations out? They were in Christmassy themed box as well so I think a minimum expiry date of 26th December should apply.

I may need a Brew and a sit down with a mince pie

Do you think I should start an online petition against it all?

Some people just like to eat them sooner.

I would be pretty worried if I got pies in Septmember which had a December date!

While I accept it is true that some people like them all year round brushes pastry crumbs off skirt it's the principle of the matter! If they had iced pies with spiderweb icing I could sort of accept it as seasonal (still a bit early).

I agree on principle but quite relieved they don't last til December - they be full of something weird to last that long.

Bit torn on seasonal food being available all year - on one hand wouldn't want to deprive people who love mince pies or whatever, but seems a bit less special.

It's more the Christamssy packaging on a item that needs using up by 2 months before Xmas that's irritating.

Luckily we're halfway through the mince pies and I will be able to get rid of the offending box quite soon.

Creme eggs... I ate a few too many at one go a couple of years back and now the idea of eating them makes me nauseated. My heart wants to but my head says no Sad.

Wasn't there a MNetter who was trying to eat a box of 48 in a day or similar last year? I wonder how she feels about them this year.

My mum gets the puff pastry ones and freezes them, that way they keep til Xmas.

Well I feel better now as I have 'disposed' of them and the offending box with gold snowflakes

It was a creme egg eating MNetter's challenge. I felt sick just reading that thread.

Ooh, love mince pies. Heston wanky Waitrose ones (with pine sugar) were my faves from last year.

I'd love a warm mince pie with cream...I have some unopened bottles of mulled wine from last year, if it gets any cooler might have some of that too!

but surely buying mince pies in September to eat in December is more ludicrous? Unless you're expecting a nuclear winter (are you?).

We eat mince pies as soon as they come into the shops. I haven't seen any yet though, so please say where you got them from. DH is going overseas next week for four months, I could put some in his case.

I'm not keen on mince pies unless they're Waterfields' mince pies. They are gorgeous.

MissBee the Heston pies were fine, they just smelled like toilet cleaner once you put the pine sugar on them. I wasted two pies with that sugar, I couldn't eat them.

Someone in the supermarket had half a dozen chocolate advent calendars. I was baffled. They're full price and not going to get more expensive, nor run out.

As for buying in advance to spread the cost, I don't get that either. We save up from January onwards to go Christmas shopping in December when we can buy presents to suit people's current interests, and not have to find hiding places for seasonal treats that will inevitably get eaten and need replacing.

The reason they have to be eaten before this christmas is because they are left overs from last christmas. This is my theory anyway.
