school have decied those who bring packed lunch should pay £1 per day to sit and eat it in the canteen...(run by a private contractor)

if they provide juice/fruit for my child yes i would pay.

but not for just the space?

I am gobsmacked. That's disgusting!

chocoluvva · 04/09/2013 14:32

Is this legal? Shock

BrokenSunglasses · 04/09/2013 14:32

Sounds crazy to me, but maybe it pays for the supervision in the canteen?

fridgealwaysfull · 04/09/2013 14:32

What? Awful

Sirzy · 04/09/2013 14:32

I would say "thats fine, he will sit in the classroom/corridor" then.

what have other parents said? I don't see how they can enforce it at all, would they stop a child eating if they hadn't paid?

wishingchair · 04/09/2013 14:32

What??! It's only £2 a day for school dinners. That's ridiculous.

sonlypuppyfat · 04/09/2013 14:33

Another reason schools wind me up so much

Snatchoo · 04/09/2013 14:33

That is fucking ridiculous!

They only charge £1 a day for school dinners at our school.

YANBU.

I would speak to some other packed lunch parents and then present a united front that they should find somewhere else non-chargeable for your children to sit.

belatedmaybe · 04/09/2013 14:33

That can't be legal. They have to offer the option of packed lunch and they have to provide somewhere suitable to eat it don't they?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 04/09/2013 14:33

I would check the legality of that charge. As them on what basis they are making the charge and the rules/legislation that gives them those powers.

Mumof3xx · 04/09/2013 14:33

If you won't pay what will they do? They can't not allow your child to eat

grabaspoon · 04/09/2013 14:33

YANBU -

MrsWilliamBodie · 04/09/2013 14:33

YANBU

our schools are really selling out aren't they?

have your child's school offered any alternative, not-for-profit venue for the children to eat.

wishingchair · 04/09/2013 14:33

I'd be inclined to say, no, we won't be paying that. So, now what?

GrimmaTheNome · 04/09/2013 14:33

Is there anywhere else they are allowed to eat a packed lunch?

In any case, sounds wrong. Can you get together with other parents and get this changed?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 04/09/2013 14:34

Ask them

HarumScarum · 04/09/2013 14:34

Bloody hell! That's outrageous.

StraightJacket · 04/09/2013 14:34

[Shock]

what sirzy said!

itsnothingoriginal · 04/09/2013 14:35

Shocking Shock

I would talk to one of the governors about the legality of this charge. Otherwise, take it to the local paper!

chocoluvva · 04/09/2013 14:36

Is this a fee-paying school?

headlesslambrini · 04/09/2013 14:36

then I would go back to the school and ask them where is the alternative place on school grounds for them to eat their packed lunches. If no, then ask for a lunch pass for them to go off school grounds i.e. just outside the gate for them to eat. As soon as they end up with litter all over the place, and the lunch staff / teachers / residents complaining then they will reverse their decision.

Just another way for a private contractor to get money. Disgusting.

Tailtwister · 04/09/2013 14:37

That's ridiculous, there's no way I would pay!

If that's the case then the school needs to provide somewhere else for the children to have their packed lunches.

moominmarvellous · 04/09/2013 14:38

That's insane. YANBU!

KirjavaTheCat · 04/09/2013 14:39

No.

spiderlight · 04/09/2013 14:40

What??! That is the most bonkers thing I've seen all day.
