to think there is no place for raw onions in sandwiches

I've just picked up some lunch from a popular sandwich venue and, as usual, have had to pull out the best part of a raw red onion before eating it. AIBU to think that there is no sensible justification for having raw onions in sarnies? Surely the vast majority of people who buy lunch in these places are office workers who don't want to spend the rest of the day breathing onion stink all over their colleagues? (And yes, I know I could bring lunch from home instead of wasting my money blah di blah but I can't be arsed really don't have time to make lunch every day.)

There's no place for raw onion anywhere imo. Pet hate is when diced red onion comes scattered all over a salad, bleugh!

YANBU!

Pootles2010 · 22/08/2013 13:22

Yak! The place for raw onions is a frying pan.

DangoDays · 22/08/2013 13:22

Ooooo raw onion sliced finely with mature cheddar. Love it. Oh so stinky, oh so good.

halcyondays · 22/08/2013 13:23

I like onion in sandwiches, red onion is milder than other onions. cant you just ask for no onions?

Lottapianos · 22/08/2013 13:23

YANBU. Gross. If you're using raw onions, you need to soak them in lime juice for at least 10 minutes first - that takes the nasty sting out of them and stop you stinking after you've eaten them.

Sirzy · 22/08/2013 13:24

Red onion in a tuna butty is lovely!

Safyre · 22/08/2013 13:24

I buy bags of chopped onions from Asda that you buy to put in soups and eat them straight out of the bag.

YABU.

Traditionally, onions available in Britain were sharp and unpleasant, so I think that's why many people can't abide them. I've been brought up (in the UK) on raw onions in everything as it was very much the norm for my South Austrian mother who was accustomed to the sweet north Italian onions her mother would use.

Sweet raw onions in sandwiches is HEAVEN!

VenusRising · 22/08/2013 13:31

Onions are delicious in a salad and a sandwich, UABVU! :)

I have a friend who eats onions like apples, and I agree that's going a little bit ott.

Vickibee · 22/08/2013 13:31

pumpkinsweetie · 22/08/2013 13:31

Crowler · 22/08/2013 13:32

I LOVE red onion on a sandwich!

This is why you keep a toothbrush at work.

BitOutOfPractice · 22/08/2013 13:32

YABTU Sandwiches are a PERFECT pace for raw onions.

QOD · 22/08/2013 13:33

I have a bag of red onions on the go always! Raw red onion in sandwiches, on toast with cheese, on salad, on anything YUM!!!

SelectAUserName · 22/08/2013 13:34

YANBU. Our staff canteen does the same - great honking chunks of raw onion mixed in with just about everything. Same with salad garnishes in restaurants. Even red onion leaves you with onion breath and as I spend lots of my time in small meeting rooms I don't want to breathe it over my poor colleagues.

ShakeAndVac · 22/08/2013 13:34

Ooh, I love a bit of raw onion in a nice ham salad sarnie or whatever. The trick is to ask for 'just a few onions' so they know not to try putting what seems like a whole onion in there Grin
Just say no to the onions if you don't want them or pull them out if they're already in!

YABU, there's nothing quite as nice as a cheese and onion toastie, yum!

mycatlikestwiglets · 22/08/2013 13:41

I'm talking about Pret and the like here where you can't choose a no-onions option - it's such a pain having to pull them all out and there's always an oniony aftertaste. The toothbrush thing doesn't work ime - something about raw onions seems to keep the taste and smell returning throughout the day.

You stinky onion-lovers are mad I tell you.

YABU - but the addition of the onion should be subtle. You can't beat a cheese and (subtle) onion sandwich.
