to think there is no place for raw onions in sandwiches

I've just picked up some lunch from a popular sandwich venue and, as usual, have had to pull out the best part of a raw red onion before eating it. AIBU to think that there is no sensible justification for having raw onions in sarnies? Surely the vast majority of people who buy lunch in these places are office workers who don't want to spend the rest of the day breathing onion stink all over their colleagues? (And yes, I know I could bring lunch from home instead of wasting my money blah di blah but I can't be arsed really don't have time to make lunch every day.)

another onion lover here, I'm known to thinly slice an onion and sprinkle salt on top then crunch at dinner time!!Grin It goes great with a curry and rice.
of course I brush my teeth vigorously afterwards and chew some strong gum. so yes yabvvvu!!

Sirzy · 22/08/2013 17:12

But tomatos leak and make the whole sandwich taste horrible!

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 22/08/2013 17:14

YABVVU I love red onions in sandwiches

SPsTotallyMullerFuckingLicious · 22/08/2013 17:14

YABU

Red onion is the best onion especially with that orange cheddar in a sandwich. Yum.

I used to eat onion sandwiches when I was younger. Loved them

SirChenjin · 23/08/2013 12:06

You raw onion eaters all have stinky breath you know - even if you think you don't

GoblinQueen · 23/08/2013 12:14

There's nothing worse than taking a big bite of grated cheese sandwich and finding its filled with sneaky chopped onions (and then having to swallow the fucker). I love cooked onions, onion relish (even cheese & onion crisps) but raw onion is just WRONG!! Bleugh

NoComet · 23/08/2013 12:20

Totally agree the only place for raw onion is in a pan of hot oil/butter.

Bogeyface · 23/08/2013 12:21

Raw onion triggers my IBS, which a handy excuse as I hate them anyway! If I go to Maccies I order my QP without onion or pickle because a) both are vile and b) it guarantees my burger is fresh and hasnt been sat there for half an hour.

I hate the fact that most meals come with oniony side salad too regadless of the type of meal, a burger and chips doesnt need a 50p sized piece of lettuce and a handful of onion on the plate, neither does lasagne! If I want a salad I will order it thank you!

sherbetpips · 23/08/2013 12:22

raw red onion is a guilty pleasure that I always, always regret in indulging in at lunchtime. Lovely on tuna.

DidoTheDodo · 23/08/2013 12:23

YANBU. I just agree. The end.

Runningchick123 · 23/08/2013 12:25

I love red onions, but will only eat them away from home if I have chewing gum/ tic tacs.
Cucumber on the other hand should be banned from sandwiches as the human body cannot digest the skin of cucumbers and it all comes out as it went in (as well as the fact that they taste vile).

Floggingmolly · 23/08/2013 12:28

Onions are the one foodstuff that enhances any dish, hot or cold. Curries, stews, roasts, salads, sandwiches, everything. I love onions...

phantomnamechanger · 23/08/2013 12:32

red onion and tuna mayo sandwiches are delish

kali110 · 23/08/2013 12:42

Yabu! Love onions esp red! Sandwiches salads stirfrys. I cant have a curry with some raw onions on top!!
Used to hate them as a child though

mycatlikestwiglets · 23/08/2013 12:44

I can't believe some of you are still trying to justify yourselves and your foul smelling raw onion habits! Not sure why I posted this thread because I am clearly NBU

Or tucked in with a roasting joint of beef. Mmmm ... who needs Bisto?

themaltesefalcon · 23/08/2013 13:20

Why do I read these delicious threads when I have no fucking food in the house? Angry

BigBoobiedBertha · 23/08/2013 13:24

YABU. All sandwiches are enhanced by a smattering of onion, fresh cut raw or pickled raw.

BigBoobiedBertha · 23/08/2013 13:25

Actually, my last post isn't true is it? Jam, peanut butter or chocolate spread can do without an onion garnish but hopefully that is obvious. Grin

GrimmaTheNome · 23/08/2013 13:32

No, no, no - if you've enough other tasty stuff in your sandwich, you don't need bloody stinky raw onions.

Cheese and chutney - raw onions superfluous if you've got good pickle.
Mozarella, basil and tomato, with black pepper. Onion would kill the lovely balance of flavours.
Roast beef and horseradish.

PunkHedgehog · 23/08/2013 14:39

Raw onion is foul, and completely overpowers the taste of many of the things it's added to - why take a delicately flavoured egg mayo, or a subtle salad, and drown it out with brash, stinky onion?

However - with a large sample of both lovers and haters - this is the perfect place to test my theory. Are people who like raw onion on salad all smokers?

slapandpickle · 23/08/2013 14:42

am I grim for liking a nice peanut butter and onion roll? works perfectly, the stickiness of the pb stops the onion falling out Grin

Longdistance · 23/08/2013 14:48

YABU.

Onion, onion, onion, raw, raw, raw

mycatlikestwiglets · 23/08/2013 14:54

massive at peanut butter and onion roll.

Interesting theory PunkHedgehog!

Well, give me some data, people.

Do you
a) like onion
b) smoke (or used to smoke)

I'll start off: yuk and never.
