To think that refering to a baby's age in weeks (once the baby is older than a month) is unnecessary.

I am often confused when people refer to their baby's age in weeks. A friend posted on facebook "Wow my ds is 27 weeks! Time is going so fast!" I recently asked a lady on the bus how old her dd was and she said "13 weeks."

Given that babies born at 37 weeks and those born at 42 weeks are all considered full term it seems pedantic to state a baby's age in weeks.

AIBU to think that once your baby is over 1 month old you can start refering to their age in months even if you say "3 and a half months" or "nearly 2 months." Is there a reason why the exact age in weeks is important? Maybe it is just me and my bad maths skills that stuggle to work out how old the baby actually is.

I think it should be weeks until 3 months, then in months up to 1 year, then it should be 'year and a bit, 18 months, nearly 2'

from then on, just say how many years! Saying 36 months is stupid, they're three years old. If they're actually 35 months, no-one cares, just say nearly 3.

I used weeks until about 5/6 months.

I don't get toddlers bring referred to as 29/34/37 months etc ... Seriously let go, they're not a baby anymore!

I would say weeks up to 3 montgs then months up till 2 just years after that

First baby: age given in weeks (and days)

Second baby: vague stab at weeks for first month or two. Thereafter it's "oh, umm, 4 and a bit months?"

Yeh it annoys me unnecessarily too. And the months thing. YANBU.

Does it matter? 27 weeks is obviously slightly more than six months. Who cares how other peopke say babies ages?

Saying a child's age in months annoys me, 'my 32 month old' or whatever. Who counts that far? They're nearly 3, let it go.

I think I counted DS's age in weeks til about 16.

YANBU. I always use months although I did use weeks during the pregnancy (and started forgetting the weeks once we'd got to about 28). I have terrible maths skills, I'm ok on paper but if someone said "27 weeks" to me I'd totally freeze and wouldn't be able to work it out in months until later

Weeks to 6 months IMO. There is a huge difference in 3-4 weeks at that point, particularly in terms of weaning and other milestones.

I think I referred in weeks up until about 4 months - I think. My DS, who has just started walking, so really looking like a little boy, I still refer to in months, as in he's coming up to 17 months. I think once he gets to 18 months I'll probably round him down or up - but I've only just had at thought, it never occurred to me it was annoying referring to him as 16 months or 17 months etc.

Absolutely agree- DS was weeks up to 10 weeks, now he is nearly 3 months. A mum recently told me her son was 36 weeks. I only realised how old he was due to pregnancy dating in weeks. DH just looked at me blankly with one of those "help me!" faces.

There's been a few threads on here that refer to >36 months. I think there was even a 40+ one recently.

I find that little detail very telling.

Days up to 2 weeks.
Weeks up to 3 months.
Months up to 18 months.

Agree totally OP! So annoying, I did months after 6 weeks as 6 weeks is a sort of mile stone with the 6 weeks checks for you and baby ect ect.

Weeks up to 6 months then months up to 2. Then I gradually let go and started in years although I do write the months on here, as in 5.7 years.

I agree. When someone says their baby is 22 weeks or whatever, I do a quick calculation to work out how many months that is as it's the only way I can really understand how old they are.

But I also find it weird when people on here refer to their baby as 'a newborn' and that seems to mean anything from 0-3 months or more. When I had my ds in the early 90s I would have told you how many weeks or months old he was. I think if someone had asked me when he was only a couple of days old I'd have said he was a few days old (or more likely "baby? I have a baby?" through a sleepy haze). I don't think I'd ever say I had a 'newborn'. And if you have a newborn, it's a new born baby, not a newborn. My computer in fact keeps underlining it as it's not accepting it as a word.

Ha ha yep I'm totally guilty of this... My pfb is 18 and a half weeks

Although I think it depends who you're talking to- to other mums of babies I talk in weeks, as it means something to other mums (I assume)

To people who don't currently have babies I say he's 4 months.

Newborn is a category that means less than one month old going by the databases I use at work.

For what that's worth..

I don't like it during pregnancy... May just be my maths skills but it takes me ages to work it out then new borns up to about 2 months I can handle weeks before it should be months, then when they hit about 23 months, they should be nearly 2... Wow! Sorry! That's more complicated than I thought!
